Moving average (MA) crossover is a common arsenal employed by technical analysts (chartists) to identify basic entry or exit point. A bullish crossover occurs when a faster moving average (short term) crosses above the slower moving average (long term), whereas, a bearish crossover takes place when a faster moving average crosses below the slow moving average. Figure 1 shows the 2‐simple moving average technique. Price is NEPSE’s daily closing value from 14/07/2011 to 16/09/2012. 50‐day and 200‐day moving averages are the Figure 2 shows the summary of volume viz. number of shares traded per day, for the same period of time. The volume of NEPSE has increased in the recent times as pointed out by the figure. The price augmentation supplemented by the upsurge of volume gives a strong signal that NEPSE may take an uptrend in the near future. short term and long term moving averages respectively. As can be seen in the figure, the 50‐day MA has provided support to the price index for a considerable period of time (141‐235 days in the graph)after which the price crosses above that average indicating a possible upward trend. Not only this, the short term MA just crossing above the long term MA provides more evidence that NEPSE might be in a probable uptrend. Additional moving averages may be added to the chart to increase the validity of the signal. By using a number of moving averages, a moving average ribbon can be generated to judge the strength of the current trend. When all the moving averages are moving in the same direction then the trend is said to be strong. Nabil Investment Banking Ltd.
