Dear Friends of Children’s HeartLink, As we’ve mobilized resources throughout the world to deliver pediatric cardiac care and development, it becomes amazingly clear that regardless of where we are, there is scarcely a line that divides us. The extraordinary donors who generously give of time, talent and funding connect with our partners and further the understanding of our place in a changing world. We are linked by a common purpose—to heal the world’s children. Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect across the globe; yet over ninety percent of children in developing countries are left untreated. These children do not die from heart disease because we lack the knowledge to treat them; they die because they have no access to cardiac care. We must seek to understand the obstacles and work together to overcome them. It doesn’t matter where you go, children are the common language of the world’s future. Children’s HeartLink has a clear signature in the cardiac-outreach world for building sustainable pediatric programs. For nearly four decades, it has remained remarkably focused on pediatric cardiac care and has consistently stretched in its delivery and aspirations to provide the finest, most comprehensive resources. As we reflect on what has driven the success of our delivery model, we can only marvel at the dedication and compassion demonstrated by our talented medical volunteers from the world’s leading pediatric cardiac centers and the incredibly kind donors whom you see listed on these pages. During the past year, we have deepened relationships with existing programs and provided new support in China and Costa Rica. Children’s HeartLink is also leading the international debate over how best to prevent disease and improve access to treatment. In June 2007, we published the second Global Report to stimulate awareness and action to address the enormous need for pediatric cardiac care in developing countries. We have continued to improve our ability to measure and assess progress at all of our partner sites, helping us to enhance our delivery model and report advances at the hospitals in which we work. Ultimately, through the development of our partners, we are reaching more children. It doesn’t matter where you go in this world, the children you see are the future of that place. It’s easy to see why congenital heart disease brings together extraordinary hearts, minds and resources from across the globe in pursuit of a better future; not just for the children we treat, but for the places we treat them in. Within these pages you will find the details of how, on every continent, we are linked by this common purpose: Healing our world’s children. We owe profound thanks to the many who have joined with us over the past year, never accepting that the status quo is good enough and challenging us to deepen service to our partners. Sincerely, Elizabeth Bickel President Rodolfo Neirotti, M.D., Cambridge, MA, USA Sara Noonan, World Heart Federation, Geneva, Switzerland I¢ began wi£h a selfles acù by one êoc¶or. Since the first child from Vietnam was helped almost forty years ago, Children’s HeartLink has been dedicated to the prevention and treatment of heart disease in the developing world. In 2007, that spirit of commitment and caring could be seen in nearly one hundred medical volunteers from across the globe who volunteer their time, expertise and talent to Children’s HeartLink. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of the doctors, nurses, perfusionists, respiratory therapists and other professionals noted on these pages, Children’s HeartLink is able to continue their lifesaving work around the world. Since 1995, we’ve provided them with technical assistance, training, equipment, supplies and financial support to address the cardiac needs of East African children. In a unique project, Children’s HeartLink works with the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, to address the development and retention of critical care nurses. In addressing these areas, a twinning relationship has been established with the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University, which will allow the exchange of staff and the development of interactive teaching programs online for the nurses. In addition, Children’s HeartLink was a key sponsor and presenter on pediatric cardiac disease at the All Africa Conference hosted by the Pan African Society of Cardiology, the Kenya Cardiac Society Conference and World Heart Federation in May 2007. Eêuca£ion for change eLearning Children’s HeartLink, in conjunction with Dr. Kazem Behbehani of the Health Academy and the World Health Organization (WHO), and Dr. Ed Kaplan from the University of Minnesota, developed and completed an interactive eLearning program on rheumatic fever prevention for schoolaged children. Rheumatic heart disease, while relatively rare in the developed world, continues to be a significant cause of heart disease for children in the developing world. With the availability of good information and strategic prevention efforts, this type of acquired heart disease is preventable at a fraction of the cost of surgical treatment. global report on the state of pediatric services in the world Children’s HeartLink continued to distinguish itself this year as a leader in facilitating dialogue and increasing awareness about pediatric heart disease and the challenges in providing services in the developing world by publishing Africa Nairobi Hospital—Nairobi, Kenya—Dennis Wakati, an eight-year-old Kenyan boy with a big smile, was diagnosed with an Atrial septal defect two years ago when he was hospitalized. Although his family is very poor and could not afford treatment, Children’s HeartLink made a lifesaving operation possible on June 11, 2007 at Nairobi Hospital, a long-time partner site of Children’s HeartLink. its second Global Report, “Linked by a Common Purpose (2007).” It offers an in-depth look at congenital and acquired heart disease and, in particular, the factors that make its diagnosis and treatment so difficult in the developing world. Children’s HeartLink is also at the forefront of leadership and advocacy of prevention and treatment of pediatric heart disease through presentations at conferences around the world. The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto—Chengdu, China—November 11, 2007— “The teams from West China hospitals were quite advanced in many ways, but clearly benefited from our interaction and teaching. By the time we left [Chengdu, China], they had already adopted more effective techniques regarding pain control and postoperative fluid management,” said Dr. Steven Schwartz, Intensivist from The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. bangalore, india chengdu, china Children’s HeartLink provides continued support for the Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute for Cardiac Sciences in Bangalore, India, one of the largest cardiovascular programs in the world. Connecting them with experts at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, through a series of teleconferences, Children’s HeartLink provided cutting-edge training and education to more than 100 nurses. Children’s HeartLink continues to provide funding and supplies in support of the hospital’s significant commitment to charity care for children. Children’s HeartLink began a new partnership with First and Second West China Hospitals of Sichuan University in Chengdu by sending the cardiac team from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Working with both hospitals to enhance pediatric cardiac services, the team participated in lifesaving operations and catheterization procedures. Lectures on postoperative care, pain management, types of congenital heart defects and surgical techniques reached more than 400 doctors and nurses. lanzhou, china cochin, india Children’s HeartLink has partnered with the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), an excellent cardiac program located in the state of Kerala in southern India since 2000. With assistance from Children’s HeartLink, AIMS has provided training for nurses throughout India. Current projects include infection control, critical care nursing, funding for needy patients and support for a regional conference on postoperative cardiac care. Children’s HeartLink has provided training, technical assistance and patient funding since 1999 to the First Hospital of Lanzhou University, located in Gansu province, one of the poorest in southwest China. In 2006, Children’s HeartLink established a relationship between Shanghai Children’s Medical Center and the First Hospital of Lanzhou University and funded a seven-member team from Lanzhou to receive a one-year residency in Shanghai. The opportunity for this team to learn from one of China’s premiere children’s hospitals is immeasurable and is an example of using outstanding regional resources to foster growth at international partner sites. Children’s HeartLink contributed $30,000 to the Lanzhou/ Children’s HeartLink Foundation that provides treatment for needy children. asia mumbai, india shanghai, china In an effort to advance pediatric cardiac services in Mumbai, Children’s HeartLink sponsored a second cardiac mission to the Asian Heart Institute. The team from Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital traveled to Mumbai to work with the pediatric cardiac team at the Asian Heart Institute, providing lifesaving care and training opportunities to more than 200 staff. The Institute is striving to be one of the few dedicated pediatric cardiac programs in a city of more than 19 million. Medical volunteers from Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital provided education and training in the management and treatment of more complex pediatric cardiac cases at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center (SCMC) through the support of Children’s HeartLink. This support promotes international exchange and strengthens SCMC, a regional center of excellence. In response to the shortage of pediatric cardiologists in China, Children’s HeartLink, for the third year, provided support for the 3rd China Pediatric Cardiology Symposium, where lectures were presented and treatment demonstrations were performed. Asia Reaching ou´ wi¢h hear¶s anê minês. Europe geneva, switzerland Children’s HeartLink was a leading presenter at the 3rd Global Forum on Humanitarian Medicine in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Geneva, Switzerland, in May of 2007. Support was also provided for an interventional cardiologist from Lviv Regional Hospital to receive training at the regional center of excellence in Kyiv. Children’s HeartLink volunteers are crucial to the prevention and treatment of children’s heart disease. Their willingness to share their time is at the heart of what we do, and their generous support enables us to establish new, sustainable programs—an impact reaching across the globe.
