From the Pastor’s Pen Lent 2015 Lenten Message of Pope Francis Lenten Prayer Opportunities Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all it is a “time of grace” (2 Cor 6:2). God does not ask of us anything that He Himself has not first given us. “We love because He first has loved us” (1 Jn. 4:19). He is not aloof from us. Each one of us has a place in His heart. He knows us by name, He cares for us and He seeks us out whenever we turn away from Him. He is interested in each of us; His love does not allow Him to be indifferent to what happens to us. Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does); we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure . . . Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. It is a problem which we, as Christians, need to confront. is the Celebration of Jesus’ Love for each one of us— How will I grow in my love of Jesus during this Season of Grace? Ash Wednesday’s Word of God call us to: 1. Pray—with Scripture and with others, at home and church; 2. Fast—simplify and detach from things; 3. Give Alms—take home a Rice Bowl and calendar and each family member could contribute money not spent on self or food or things. Daily Mass—6:30 and 8:00am Come to our Youth/Family Masses on Sundays, Febru- ary 22 (TONIGHT!!!), March 8, March 22 at 5:00pm of the Cross and Benediction every Friday of Lent at 7:00pm. Come for the Fish Fry and join us upstairs after! “Come pray with me for one hour” - why not commit an hour on March 16 to pray during Eucharistic Adoration after the 8:00am Mass until 6:00pm. Scripture Study—join a small group to share about “Mary—Jesus’ Mother and Ours.” See more info later in this bulletin. Home/Family/Personal/Couple Prayer—take the Five Minutes with the Word booklet home with you. Use Rice Bowl prayers (and try the weekly recipes). The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered every Saturday from 4:00—4:40pm, and on Tuesday, March 31 from 7:00-8:00pm. Attend Lifeline Adoration with our youth and other parishioners on the last Thursdays of the month: February 27 and March 26 from 7:00—8:30pm. Stations CRS Rice Bowl Our journey with CRS Rice Bowl begins in Tanzania, where a simple soybean is changing lives! What actions can you take this Lent to change lives—at home and around the world? Thank you, Jesus, for our Awesome 2015 Dinner Auction You could feel the love of Jesus incarnate in everyone at the Auction—and sharing God’s Generosity in your support, work, donations and bids. Thank you for showing your commitment to grow our Borromeo Family as warm, welcoming, and as a Home for all God’s Children, indeed “Linked in Love!” See later pages in this bulletin for our thanks to so many who worked so much to make it so beautiful and successful.) Dear Brothers and Sisters, When the people of God are converted to His love, they find answers to the questions that history continually raises. One of the most urgent challenges which I would like to address in this Message is precisely the globalization of indifference. Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world; He so loves it that He gave His Son for our salvation. In the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God, the gate between God and man, between heaven and earth, opens once for all. The Church is like the hand holding open this gate, thanks to her proclamation of God’s word, her celebration of the sacraments and her witness of the faith which works through love (cf. Gal 5:6). But the world tends to withdraw into itself and shut that door through which God comes into the world and the world comes to Him. Hence the hand, which is the Church, must never be surprised if it is rejected, crushed and wounded. God’s people, then, need this interior renewal, lest we become indifferent and withdraw into ourselves. To further this renewal, I would like to propose for our reflection three biblical texts. (This Message will be continued in later bulletins.) First Sunday of Lent—February 22, 2015 Prayer of the Week Almighty and Everlasting God, You have given the human race Jesus Christ our Savior as a model of humility. He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man and giving His life on the Cross. Help us to bear witness to You by following His example of suffering and make us worthy to share in His Resurrection. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son. Amen. Joke of the Week Did Noah Fish? A Sunday school teacher asked, “Johnny, do you think Noah did a lot of fishing when he was on the Ark?” “No,” replied Johnny. “How could he, with just two worms.” The Lord is My Shepherd A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible—Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter. Little Rick was excited about the task but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my Shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.” Unanswered Prayer The preacher’s 5 year old daughter noticed that her father always paused and bowed his head for a moment before starting his sermon. One day, she asked him why. “Well, honey,” he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his messages. “I’m asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon.” “How come He doesn’t answer it?” she asked. Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family! Your Brother in Jesus, Father John Tanzania: Hungering for a Better Life Like many farmers in Tanzania, Gertruda Domayo used to struggle to provide for her three grandchildren. Now she is a member of Soya ni Pesa, a Catholic Relief Services project that means “soybeans are money.” Through the project, Gertruda has learned that a few small changes can make a big difference. Crop spacing and fertilizer have doubled her harvests. The soybeans themselves add nutrients to the soil, fueling future harvests. Gertruda has learned a new way to sell her soybeans, too. She combines her crops with those of other soybean farmers. Together, they sell their soybeans in bulk. The farmers’ customers benefit too. They save time and money by purchasing large amounts of soybeans all at once. Gertruda’s new way of selling increased her income sixfold over last year, when she sold her beans alone. She can afford to buy healthier food for her family. Gertruda wants everyone in her rural village of Nakahegwa to have the same success she’s had. “I encourage my neighbors to join the project,” Gertruda says. “It will help them move from poverty by increasing their income and therefore change their lives for the better.” Catholic Social Teaching: Sacredness and Dignity of the Human Person When God created us, He made us in His image and likeness. That means that every human being has a special value and purpose. We need to care for each other so that we can be the people God calls us to be. Each person we meet is a special gift from God. GIVE 25¢ to your CRS Rice Bowl for each meal God gives you. Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo! ST. Lenten Scripture Study: Six Weeks with the Bible Mary, Jesus’ Mother— and Ours Once again we will be offering parishioners the opportunity to dig deeper into Scripture during Lent. Small groups will be formed from the list of people who sign up and submit a form indicating their desire to join and indicating when they will be able to come to a small group gathering in someone’s home for 1 to 1½ hours a week for six sessions. Sessions will begin this week. You can sign up in the back of church this weekend, or contact Gregg or Rikki Jost at 314-807-0386 or by email: [email protected]. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us. We pray that we may place our lives in God’s hands and have the strength to carry out His unique plan for each of us. We offer our prayerful sympathy to Jill Goeke on the death of her mother Jane Kuhn; to the family of Virginia Griesenauer; and to Mary Joyce Keefe on the death of her husband David Keefe. May they and all the faithful departed rest in peace. According to Mark’s gospel, immediately after his baptism, Jesus was driven into the wilderness where he lived with the wild beasts for forty days and was tempted by Satan. Through those desolate days, Jesus was faithful to God. And at the end of the forty days, the angels came to minister to Jesus. This year as you begin Lent, talk as a family about why the Holy Spirit took Jesus into the wilderness and why he stayed there forty days. It is likely you will name things such as prayer, quiet time for reflection, doing God’s will, and more. As you consider what individual members or the whole family may do in the way of Lenten practices this year, use Jesus as a model. Keep in mind that the hardships of others may be much greater than your own. Like the angels who came to Jesus’ side at the end of the forty days, perhaps your family can attend to the needs of someone else. 1. There have been times when I have been tempted to give in to a weakness of mine. One time I recall… 2. God was with me during one of the greatest tests of my life. With God’s help I… 3. Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo! St. Charles Borromeo School Dear Parishioners, One of the highlights of the year for our 8th grade students is the annual Luke 18 retreat. You’ve been reading some of their thoughts published in the bulletin. Tonight’s Youth Mass offers all the retreatants a chance to bring back that feeling with the Luke 18 Reunion. Being together in community is a way to increase the sense of belonging. We all support the efforts of our Youth Ministry Team to strengthen the bonds of unity in our young people. The future of our Church depends on the young. Your prayers of support are so welcome. On Tuesday, St. Charles Borromeo School will celebrate Kathy Kasprzyk Day, the annual commemoration of Kathy and her service to SCB. We will begin the day with prayer to remember the deep faith that Kathy freely shared with others as well as to pray for her soul. All students will be invited to take turns coming to the gym to participate in fun fitness activities, just like Kathy loved. You are welcome to join us, too, to say a prayer and to get some activity. You can check in at the office and we’ll get you to the right place! I will be spending two days helping St. Ann School with the School Improvement Process You may remember that SCB completed the process several years ago and received such high praise from the members of the team. I have the privilege of recognizing St. Ann School for all the many ways they are reaching out to their students and community. May God bless you this Lent with pardon and peace! God bless you for your generous support of this ministry! Please call Joyce Cain at 636-448-2021 if you would like more information. First Sunday of Lent—February 22, 2015 SCB Religious Education Dear Parishioners: Today is the First Sunday of Lent and we all know that Lent offers us a special opportunity to grow in our relationship with Jesus and to deepen our commitment to a way of life, rooted in our Baptism. In today’s busy world, Lent provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon our patterns, to pray more deeply, experience sadness for what we’ve done and failed to do, and to be generous to others. In introducing our Catholic perspective on Lent to our RCIA candidates, I think it is worthwhile to share with you, our larger community, something from “Journey of Faith” published by Liguori specifically for RCIA: The point is not necessarily to “give up something for Lent” but to loosen our tendency to cling to things, people, and circumstance. In order to find what attachments might be keeping us from Jesus, we might ask ourselves: • • • What or whom must I have to feel happy? What possessions do I seek and try to keep? What habits to I cling to? (For example, expressing opinions, always being in control, worrying too much.) Choose one of these “objects” of attachment. Ask yourself how important this object is to our personal identity, to our love of Jesus, and to our joyfulness of living. During this Lent, do without one thing daily that you are attached to: the morning cup of coffee, the closest parking space, your favorite music. Or do something daily that you normally do not like, and do it freely without any resentment or resistance. First Sunday of Lent—February 22, 2015 Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo! First Sunday of Lent—February 22, 2015 TO OUR FELLOW PARISHIONERS OF ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH: ANNOUNCING A NEW SESSION OF THE MINISTRY Journeying Through Grief “ . . . and Jesus wept” (John 11:36). As we all know, the cause of our Lord’s grief at this time was the death of His dear friend Lazarus. Even the bystanders present at the scene noted His grief: “See how He loved him!” Because of our common humanity, Jesus experienced the great sadness that all of us go through over the loss of a loved one. Journeying through Grief is a Christ-centered Ministry whose purpose is to reach out to those in mourning and offer them comfort and help: anyone experiencing grief over the loss of a loved one is invited to attend this session. It is based on a program of the Archdiocese of St. Louis whose Mission Statement says it best: To provide a safe and supportive experience enabling each person to begin to transform his/her life from a time of mourning to a time of healing. The Ministry will meet for four consecutive Tuesday evenings in March (3, 10, 17 and 24), in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Rectory Basement Meeting Room, #2 Seton Court, St. Charles from 7:00 to 8:30pm. It is open to anyone who is in mourning, regardless of when the loss occurred, whether recently or in the past. The program is not limited to SEAS parishioners. Guests are welcome. Registration is recommended, by contacting Marilyn Lucido at 636-946-2511, or [email protected]. Or registrants may also call Steve Cave at 636-947-4314 or Mary Kutchback at 636-946-9758. To return to the Scriptures: [Christ speaking to the Apostles at the Last Supper] “So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.” “Let us Savor, Share, and Surrender To the Source and Summit of our Faith” Please pray for our expectant moms: Kristina, Sarah (March) Melissa (April) Emily (May) Christine (June) Kori, Julie, Elizabeth (July) Tina (September) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Let us pray: for the courage and grace to love as Christ loves, and by bearing witness to the Truth, may others come to know and see Christ in our world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “There is no grief like the grief that does not speak.” Henry Longfellow The grief over an abortion exper4ience is often so deep that it seems to be silent. Women and men may bear this burden for years thinking that there is no hope of forgiveness or peace. Project Rachel offers private, professional counseling at no charge for anyone who is suffering because of an abortion experience. Call Project Rachel at 314-792-7565 to begin your journey of healing and reconciliation. STLProjectRachel.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Looking for a Friend? We are too! Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo! MINISTRIES MATTER A quick look into the Ministries of St. Charles Borromeo SCB Honors the Mini Vinnies Our parish community is full of generous people who put their hearts into serving others. The Mini Vinnies are some of those special people. The Mini Vinnies is a ministry made up of 7th and 8th grade SCB students who embrace the principles of the St. Vincent de Paul Society by serving the underserved in our community. Each week they fill 50 backpacks with food to support children in need for the Orchard Farm School District. Last year they prepared and served 403 meals at the soup kitchen, processed over 12,000 lbs. of food at the foodbank and dedicated over 235 hours of service in support of “No Hunger Holiday” and the Giving Tree. This is just a small number of things the Mini Vinnies do that makes a big impact on the community. Thank you to the Mini Vinnies, past and present, for all the love and effort you put into serving those that need you. You are an inspiration to our youth and you make your parish proud. A heartfelt thank you goes to Paula Wagner who founded the Mini Vinnies 3 years ago and still runs it today. It is because of your generosity, as well as the generosity of our many donors, that we were able to make this evening possible. The outpouring of gifts from our parishioners and community has amazed me and I am excited and honored to be part of the St. Charles Borromeo Parish and School. I struggle with words to express my sincere gratitude to an amazing group of individuals that made the evening possible. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to work with such an incredible group of people. Thank you to all of my committees. You are truly a blessing! As with all parish and school events, our success is completely dependent on the generosity of you all.
