The feast that we celebrate today is not easy to understand. The fact that Jesus left His Apostles alone requires an explanation. The life of the Apostles was anchored to Jesus; they lost Him once in his death, and now they lose Him a second time. When the Apostles began following the Lord, they believed that he would be with them for a long time; all things were connected to Him. How could Jesus leave them, and where was He going? May 16—May 23 Saturday 5:00 Sunday 7:00 Jamie Bartolome† 8:30 Anthony Spasaro St. Martin Parishioners 10:00 Miriam McAllister† 11:30 Bill Kavanaugh† 6:00 Karl Mauritz Monday 8:00 Joseph Shiro† Abandonment is closely connected with the process of adults’ maturation in their spiritual lives. Sometimes, it is necessary that after a time of preparation our teachers or our parents will leave us alone to test their teachings as we walk along the path we choose. But the truth is that we are not alone, we carry with us everywhere we go the knowledge and the teachings of our own experiences of Christ. Tuesday 8:00 Justin Semana† Wednesday 8:00 Respect for Life Thursday 8:00 Souls in Pergatory† Friday 8:00 Diane Bifano† Saturday 8:00 Attilio Borella† Our parents, our teachers and the Lord Jesus return to us at specific moments of our lives to check on us, to see how we have matured, to encourage, and to see how we live as they taught us. presence). He never abandoned those whom He loved: I will be with you always to the end of the ages. Jesus does the same with His Apostles. In His absence, He gives them opportunities to grow personally and spiritually. He will not leave them alone, beside His spiritual presence. He sends the Holy Spirit to continue and complete the work He himself had began in them. The Holy Spirit will remind them of everything that Jesus taught them, and will give to them a better and more profound understanding of the message of Christ. We are never alone. Jesus is with us, even when He seems to leave, even when we cannot see his presence. In that way, He entrusted His mission, and His message of salvation. -Fr. Sergio The absence of Jesus is an opportunity for us to continue to do His work because as we read in the New Testament, the work of redemption is achieved by Jesus’ disciples as they continue the work of God. Where is He going, to where does Jesus ascend? Heaven is His place because He comes from heaven and is returning there. Jesus not only shows us the place where we can one day live, but He also leads the way. He fulfills His promises: I am going to prepare a place for you, so where I am you also may be. In the Ascension, Jesus accomplished two things that we cannot do on our own: He left (empowering the Apostles) and He remained (with them by means of His spiritual and sacramental The Ascension of the Lord May 17, 2015 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. — Mark 16:16 Calendar of Events Weekly Report Collections 5/10/2015 10,416 Please mark checks for “Capital Campaign” in the memo section of your check. We join with millions of Catholics around the world who are grateful the Pope’s leadership on the critical issue of climate change. The following are a couple of statements from the Vatican regarding the importance of this issue. Please take time to reflect on these statements. Pontifical Academies of Sciences and Social Sciences, 2015 joint statement: “Human-induced climate change is a scientific reality, and its decisive mitigation is a moral and religious imperative for humanity; In this core moral space, the world’s religions play a very vital role. These traditions all affirm the inherent dignity of every individual linked to the common good of all humanity. They affirm the beauty, wonder, and inherent goodness of the natural world, and appreciate that it is a precious gift entrusted to our common care, making it our moral duty to respect rather than ravage the garden that is our home; The poor and excluded face dire threats from climate disruptions, including the increased frequency of droughts, extreme storms, heat waves, and rising sea levels.“ Cardinal Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, 2014 statement: “It is well known that climate change raises not only scientific, environmental and socio-economic considerations, but also and above all ethical and moral ones, because it affects everyone, in particular the poorest among us, those who are most exposed to its effects. For this reason, the Holy See has often stressed that there is a moral imperative to act, for we all bear the responsibility to protect and to value creation for the good of this and future generations. (…) The greatest challenge lies in the sphere of human values and human dignity; questions which regard the human dignity of individuals and of peoples are not able to be reduced to mere technical problems. In this sense, climate change becomes a question of justice, respect and equity, a question which must awaken our consciences.” To learn more: http:// catholicclimatemovement.global/catholicteachings-on-climate-change www.CatholicClimateMovement.global Please join our parish in welcoming the newly confirmed Mia Isabella Napolitano Amanda Rae Mitchell Paul Frank Biedka Nolan Weger Monique Charez Caravalho Emily Catherine Hughes Samira Hanna Smith Patricia Anne Ramos Isabella Granqvist Fiona Claire Lindsay Francisco Irao Joseph David Jayrald McCain Jessica Isabelle Badham Matthew DeKlotz Lukas Stephan Hunter Camille Francis Wardlaw Nick Buchholz Michael Mikacich Grace Furlong Ryan Smith Pablo JESUS Matan JV Lim Erin Rose Mulhern Sophie Pace Marlene Negrete Fausto Jack Maxwell Sebastion Matson Gabriella Escobar David Negrete Fausto Lindsey Ann Cole James Scott M'Guinness Morgan Brumm Dominic Haggerty
