Nepomucene; (d) St. Dominic. St. John Nepomucene (1345-1393)
refused to tell the King of Bohemia the sins confessed by the Queen
and was later ordered to his death. The confessional “seal” means no
priest may reveal anything told to him during this sacrament.
BAPTISM INFORMATION- Just a reminder: Baptisms are not
celebrated during the penitential seasons of Lent and Triduum except
in the cases of emergency. Lent this year will be from Feb 22nd to
April 7th. Please plan ahead.
Expectant parents do not need to wait until the child is born to participate in the Baptismal Preparation Program. Parents who have not
participated in the program in the last three years need to attend. At
St. Clement, we have three ordained ministers that baptize on a regular basis: Fr. Fred, Fr. Jim and Deacon John. All three are available
to baptize.

To the Parishioners:
Thanks to all who made our Super Bingo so super! I don’t
yet have the final financial results, but feel confident that we came
very close to meeting our goal. This one day event was the result of a
lot of hard work by a large number of folks. Thanks to our own bingo
superstars, Carol Groh and Pam Swafford, who contributed their
expertise as well as their sweat and blood. I am grateful to Jack and
Margie Panzeca from St. Lawrence who were present at each planning meeting offering their invaluable advice and who worked the
bingo itself. They were joined by bingo afficianado George Greive.
They also brought lots of folks with them from St. Lawrence. And to
Kevin Mathews, Clare Temple, Janice Hodapp and Jack Cox who
chaired the food preparations and service. Teacher Lauren Clements
coordinated the almost 100 volunteers, including most of our teachers
and staff. Frank Vonder Meulen, Patrick Anello and Kenny Doran
took care of all of the physical arrangements. Janice Ungruhe was the
outstanding facilitator of our planning meetings and insured that
nothing was left unattended. All proceeds from this important fund
raiser go to support St. Clement School. We believe we made as
much in this one event as we did in the entire last years’ worth of
Wednesday bingo. A number of folks suggested we have two Super
Bingos a year. The committee will consider this. I ask forgiveness
from any leaders whose name I omitted in this paragraph.
I know that parking for the 4 pm Mass was a huge inconvenience for many. I was out front apologizing to those who came in.
Everyone was very kind and understanding. We will take this into
consideration when we plan for our next one.
The Super Bingo was the last formal activity of Catholic
Schools Week. This was a huge additional responsibility for our
school staff and teachers who had already put in a very busy week,
beginning with the Open House the Sunday before. I am grateful for
their dedication and generous spirit. By the way, congratulations to
our 8th graders—the Class of 2012—who beat the staff in a hard
played volleyball match. Maybe it was because our teachers were
worn out!
I trust you know by now that Fr. Jim is in Assisi. He left
last week to attend a meeting of leaders of the Poor Clare nuns from
around the world. He returns home on February 21—just in time for
Ash Wednesday. He called Bro. Vince when he arrived on Feb. 3 and
said that it was snowing in Italy! Lucky guy!
Two parishioners approached me to inquire why I didn’t
read the letter the Archbishop wrote recently about the offensive
mandate of Health and Human Services, which in effect would force
all Catholic organizations to pay for practices that directly violate the
Church’s teachings. I made a discretionary decision to instead read
the Archbishop’s letter on Catholic Schools Week, which he had
requested we read. We did insert the letter about the HHS mandates
in the bulletin that same weekend. I believe active parishioners have
a responsibility to at least go through the bulletin to learn what is
going on. They would then not have missed this important letter.
We received word from the Archdiocese that St. Cecilia is
hosting a panel discussion and Q and A on the Archbishop’s letter on
Wed., Feb. 15, at 7 pm. Panelists will discuss the implications of the
government’s actions and their effect on religious liberty and will
review the Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception, abortion and
sterilization. They will also suggest ways that Catholics might respond.

GOSPEL REFLECTION by Larry Ungerer, DRF
This weekend is the sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time in Cycle B. The gospel reading for this Sunday in the A Cycle is from Matthew’s gospel and quotes Jesus as saying that he did not come to
abolish the law but to fulfill it. It is quite a coincidence that the gospel this week relates an incident in which both Jesus and the leper
violate the existing laws. The leper breaks the law by approaching
Jesus and kneeling at his feet, asking for help. Jesus, by touching the
leper, breaks the Levitical law as related in the first reading.
Jesus looks beyond the letter of the law and sees the man
and has compassion on him. Throughout Jesus’ ministry, law always
takes a backseat to human person involved. Laws are guidelines for
people to live by in community and are not ends in themselves. Jesus
always puts the person above the law.
By healing the leper, Jesus reconciles him both to the community and to God. When the man is declared clean by the priest, he
is reinstated to his family and society. Jesus does these things not to
call attention to himself (“See that you tell no one anything”) but for
the glory of God. This is the point that Paul is making in the second
reading—regardless of what you do, do for the glory of God.
This cure by Jesus shows that he reaches out to those who,
even by law, were excluded from the community both socially and
religiously. Lepers could not participate in the religious practices of
the community. Jesus makes a point of touching this person and then
sending him back to the priest to be officially accepted back into the
fold. Jesus wants this man to be part of the community so that he may
continue to offer praise and to live by the precepts of Jewish law.
If you read this gospel again, you may see that this is another encounter Jesus had with evil spirits, even though they are not
mentioned specifically. The leper comes to Jesus and Jesus is moved
with pity. Jesus touches the leper and the leprosy “left him immediately” and then “warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. Then
he said to him…”
Recall the point I made last week: illness was thought to be
another form of being possessed by evil spirits or demons. It seems
strange that Jesus, who just cured this individual out of compassion,
would be speaking to him sternly. Although the passage says that
Jesus dismissed compassion, would be speaking to him sternly. Although the passage says that Jesus dismissed him at once, the next
sentence has Jesus instructing the person on how to get re-admitted to
the community. It seems likely that Jesus was speaking to the spirit
who was within this person causing the leprosy. That is whom Jesus
is speaking sternly to and dismissing not the leper.
Do we approach Jesus and ask to be made clean of the
things that contaminate our bodies or souls? Are w honest enough in
our request that Jesus is moved with pity by our request?
PALM BRANCHES—As we prepare to enter into the holy season of
Lent, you are invited to bring any palm branches that you may have and
place them in the receptacle in the commons area of the church. These
palm branches will be burned on Sunday, February 19th after the 10:30
am mass. The ashes from these burnt palms will be used to mark our
foreheads on Ash Wednesday, February 22nd, the beginning of Lent.

REFLECTIONS FROM FR. JIM
THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
The Elements of the Sacrament –As in any sacrament, there
are two elements, what are called “matter” and “form.” Matter
refers to the “stuff” of the sacrament. In Confession it is the sins
of the penitent. The form refers to the words that are spoken. In
confession, it is the absolution of the penitent by the priest. “I
absolve you…”
Now, the most important part of confession is contrition
for sin. No sin can be forgiven if there is not contrition. However, do not confuse contrition or sorrow for sin simply with our
emotions or feelings. Sometimes sorrow may result in tears of
repentance. At other times, the feelings may even be the opposite
of what we think of as sorrow. A man who acts in revenge
against a neighbor who injured a loved one can later truly be
sorry because of his will and his intention even though there may
still be residue of angry feelings and emotions involved. He may
think he is being hypocritical or insincere because the feelings
don’t mirror the act of contrition. Remember a very basic principle: sorrow, contrition does not reside with feelings and emotions
though it seems like it does. No question, feelings or sorrow are
often present. But contrition is first and foremost a matter of the
heart and the will. The same is true of acts of love that are done
out of duty and responsibility. The greatest acts of love which
require self-denial and sacrifice are most often not accompanied
by good feelings. Think of Jesus on the cross. Nevertheless, it
was the greatest act of love without question.
The second aspect of confession is confession of sins
and what precedes it, an examination of conscience. Some may
think that if they have been away from the sacrament for a long
time, the examination will be a terrible burden and perhaps even
impossible to know their sins. Not true! A person who is really
sincere about making a good confession will find that their conscience will tell them quite frankly how they have sinned. It is
amazing how sincerity opens up our self-understanding and selfawareness. If a person receives the sacrament regularly, e.g. during Advent, during Lent and several other times during the year,
he or she will come to know themselves quite well and know
what they need to mention. In any case, the priest can help by
asking just a couple of questions. In the case of someone who has
not been to confession for a good number of years, if he tells the
confessor he or she needs help the confessor will be able to be a
guide.
Next, the confession of sins should be brief. Serious sins
are to be mentioned but great detail is not necessary. If no serious
sins, then mention the lesser ones that involve especially relationships with others and with oneself. The commandments are
always a good place to start. It is not unusual to forget to mention
something or the number even though the person sincerely examined their conscience before hand. That should not be a cause
for worry for in every confession, the intention is to include all
one’s sins, big and small. When the priest gives absolution, ALL
SINS ARE FORGIVEN. Confession is not supposed to be an
exercise in accounting. Remember, sorrow is the key. The past
has been cleansed away.
The priest will offer a word of advice or encouragement,
give a penance (usually some prayers) and then after you make
your act of contrition, he will say the words of absolution. “I absolve you from your sins…Go in peace.” You finish the sacrament by fulfilling the penance the confessor gave you.
