THE KARATE DOJO News Update
T
he Karate Dojo is
once again very
pleased
to
announce
that
the
"Yushinkai Karate Team"
once again took top honours
this April, 14, 2013 at the
Canadian Naha-Te Goju
Karate Championships! The
team, small in quantity but
big in quality, consisted of
three junior members:
Julian Lynch, Noah Miller
and Karissa Kane.
The Team, fairly new to
the competitive arena, once
again showed what can be
accomplished with hard
work and dedication. The
triumphant trio displayed,
not only their martial skills and talents at the competition, but also displayed extreme competitive conduct and outstanding sportsmanship that reflected positively on both the dojo
and the community. Much positive feedback was received from the many black belts, referees and officials with this regard.
Team Yushinkai returned home with 3 first place standings and 2 second place standings!
Very well done considering this is only the second tournament for Julian and Noah and the
first tournament for Karissa! Awards were captured in the Kata (Forms), Kumite (Point
Sparring) and Kobudo (Weapon Forms) divisions. Dojo owner / operator / instructors Steve
and Anna Lynch sensei as well as the entire clan of the Karate Dojo congratulate Julian,
Noah and Karissa on your sporting accomplishments. Well done!
BELT EXAMINATIONS / CERTIFICATIONS
On April 22nd, 2013, The Karate Dojo held its first belt examinations and certifications
at the new Angus location at 211 Mill Street. The grading board consisted of 6th degree
black belt Steven Lynch Renshi, 3rd degree black belt Anna Lynch Sensei and 2nd degree
black belt Ed Rose Sensei. Seven junior students participated in the 3 hour examination
which consisted of testing of basic technique, Japanese / Okinawa language and terminology, dojo etiquette and cultral study, kata (forms) and pre-arranged fighting drills.
On April 23rd, 2013, The Karate Dojo grading board was very pleased to announce during the grading ceremony that all seven candidates passed and were certified to the next
level in our martial art. The newly certified students are, Julian Lynch, Olivia Burleigh,
Karissa Kane, Maya Moore, Noah Miller, Jennessa Young and Noah Crockett.

bonus have your Command Team
serve you your meal? May 8 might
be your lucky day! May 8, 2013 is
McHappy Day at McDonald’s
restaurants all over the country. The
local Angus location is no exception, and this year McDonald’s
Angus will have various Unit
Command Teams working one-hour
shifts serving burgers and fries to
support this important initiative.
Come out and support this worthwhile cause!
On McHappy Day $1 from every
Happy Meal, Big Mac, and hot beverage sold will go to local children’s
charities like Ronald McDonald
House Charities.
Since McHappy Day was introduced in 1977, the national one-day
fundraising event has raised more
than $35 million for the Ronald
McDonald House program and local
children’s charities across Canada.

Canada.

Thank You Volunteers! Merci aux bénévoles!
Borden will be again this year hosting two volunteer appreciation events, one
for youth and one for adults. The adult event is taking place on May 4th in Toronto
at the Second City where volunteers will be entertained by the live comedy show
and enjoy a private catered meal. Youth volunteers will be honoured on May 9th
in Barrie at Retro Planet where youth will enjoy a meal and an afternoon of fun.
These events are hosted by Borden Community Recreation and the Borden
Family Resource Centre. The volunteer appreciation events are made possible by
the finical sponsorship of SISIP.
Both events are to recognize and thank Borden’s many volunteers who contribute countless volunteer hours to the community. It is with the assistance of
Borden’s volunteers that our community has such vibrant and active activities and
programs!
Muskoka Woods “Canadian Heroes Program” 2013
1. The Muskoka Woods Youth
Foundation invests in today’s young people
by supporting the year-round programs of
Muskoka Woods. A Christian youth resort
where creativity reigns, friendships flourish
and confidence grows, Muskoka Woods
(www.muskokawoods.com) offers lifechanging experiences that inspire imaginations and shape character.
2. When a parent is deployed overseas,
has lost their life in the line of duty,
becomes ill or injured as a result thereof;
sometimes children are left to deal with the
heartache and stresses of coping, sometimes for months at a time and beyond. The
vision of the “Heroes” program is to serve
the children of the Canadian troops who are
serving our country.
3. Initiated and funded by generous
donations in 2008, the Canadian Heroes
Program gives sons and daughters of military families the opportunity to become
summer guests of Muskoka Woods.
4. Since 2007, Muskoka Woods has hosted 470 youth from all over Ontario. Each
child represented at least one parent on
active duty, from CFB North Bay, Ottawa,
Borden, Petawawa, London, Kingston,
Trenton and Meaford.

be responsible for accepting applications
and validating candidate eligibility. CF

Programme Canadian Heroes de Muskoka Woods de 2013

back-to-back at the United States Air Force (USAF)
Ramstein Air Base in Germany. As the largest event of its
type outside of the United States, it was attended by more
than 180 medical specialists, surgical specialists and flight
medicine personnel from 16 countries. The purpose of the
event was to promote partnership building and information
sharing in the area of flight medicine.
This year’s topic was “Aeromedical Risk Assessment,”
with a focus on aircrew selection and keeping aircrew “fit to
fly.” The presentations covered a broad range of topics
including this year’s famous Red Bull Stratos parachute
jump from 127 851 feet by Felix Baumgartner to tropical
diseases encountered by aircrew on operations in Africa.
Also discussed were the challenges of new technologies,
such as oxygen delivery in the latest generation of fighter
jets, as well as new problems identified in older technologies, such as the risks of high-altitude exposure in reconnaissance pilots. The Canadian Forces team presented infor-
mation on leading-edge Canadian practices, primarily coming from research at the Canadian Forces Environmental
Medicine Establishment (CFEME) and Defence Research
and Development Canada (DRDC) in Toronto.
While the main topic was “Aeromedical Risk
Assessment,” the other theme of the conference was the
impact of deep financial and military cut-backs around the
globe. In fact, the recent so-called “sequestration” budget
cuts in the United States military had actually placed the
conference in jeopardy, as all non-operational travel was
suspended for its military members. However, the conference was saved by the recognition of the importance of
international partnerships in flight medicine. The allied
nations realize that only together can they continue the
essential research which will overcome the current challenges of flight operations as well as take humans to new
and extreme environments, such as deep space or even
Mars.

Heureusement, l’évènement a pu

O
ften we relate grief and bereavement to the major losses we encounter in our
lives, but rarely do we understand how it plays out through the changes and transitions we encounter every day. Living and working in an environment that constantly keeps us changing – jobs, friends, relationships, routines, and expectations - can
introduce us to many new and exciting experiences. However, we may also find ourselves
feeling sad, empty or depressed without really knowing why; we may not acknowledge we
are grieving these small changes when we have difficulty sleeping, feel stressed or anxious,
are reluctant to connect with others, or do not feel excited about things currently going on
in our lives.
Building our resiliency in navigating these constant changes means learning how to
identify our losses and mourn them, so that we can begin to take steps towards the opportunities that await us. Reaching out to local supports can also help to develop ways of transitioning through grief and adapting to change. The Borden Family Resource Centre can not
only provide short term support, but also has resources in our information library about
grief, and navigating the transitions that come with military life:
• On Grief and Grieving
• Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes
• Married to the Military: A Survival Guide for Military Wives, Girlfriends, and
Women in Uniform
• The Anxiety Book: Developing Strength in the Face of Fear
• Smart Moves: Your Guide Through the Emotional Maze of Relocation
• Parenting Through Crisis: Helping Kids in Times of Loss, Grief, and Change
Please come to the Centre to access these resources, or contact your Prevention and
Intervention service for support at 705-424-1200 x 1542.

• On Grief and Grieving
• Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes
• Married to the Military: A Survival Guide for Military Wives, Girlfriends, and
Women in Uniform
• The Anxiety Book: Developing Strength in the Face of Fear
• Smart Moves: Your Guide Through the Emotional Maze of Relocation
• Parenting Through Crisis: Helping Kids in Times of Loss, Grief, and Change
poste 1542.
The cost for the trip is $53 for CF Members and their immediate families, DND, BFRC,
CFHA and PSP employees and $56 for other participants.
The chartered bus from Great Canadian Tours will pick up participants at 8 a.m. and
return at 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Borden Family Resource Centre.

LAWYERS IN LITERATURE - THE GOOD
here is no finer example of an ideal
lawyer than Atticus Finch the central
figure in Harper Lee's classic, "To
Kill a Mockingbird."
A widower, Finch, raises his two children
in Alabama through the Great Depression.
Like most families at that time, they are poor
and occasionally the highly respected Finch
gets paid in produce. He accepts these payments without question respecting his
clients' dignity. By his words and conduct he
upholds the goal of equality of people
despite the ingrained racial hatred of the
deep south.
Finch is appointed to defend Tom
Robinson, an African American accused of
beating and raping a white woman, Mayella
Ewell at her family's home beside the town
dump. Risking his personal safety to prevent
Robinson's lynching, Finch proves at the
trial that Robinson's lame right hand could
not have caused the injuries to the right side
of Mayella's face. In the climatic crossexamination of Mayella's white trash father,
Uncover More Legal Grounds at:
Bob Ewell, Finch shows that he was lefthanded, by getting Ewell to prove that he
could write. Ewell missed the trap, thinking
Finch was trying to show up his lack of
learning and hurls scorn on Finch unaware of
the conclusion the packed court room has
been led to.
While not alone among the townsfolk, the
lawyer Finch is put at the head of those who
believe that justice should not be determined
by the colour of a man's skin; but while the
jury thought long and hard, they still
returned a verdict of guilty. While Finch had
not overcome the ingrained intolerance, he
did stand up for right.
Art reflects life, and like all walks of life
there are the good and the bad in the legal
profession. Harper Lee's Atticus Finch is an
inspiration to lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
