The regular season championship ended in a tie between AOBC #2 and the CFSATE Staff team. The play-offs was a double elimination tournament that saw the CFSATE Staff team come out on top and win this championship. NPP Soccer had 4 teams and 56 participants. The season was cut short due to several course graduations and teams not being able to field a team once this happened. The summer finished with the players getting together and scrimmaging. NPP Slo-Pitch started the season with 16 teams and 234 participants. But as the summer went on we lost 4 teams. The regular season champs were CFLTC in a close race. The play-off format was a double elimination tournament which saw the regular season champs taken out in the 4th round. RCEME was the undefeated team going into the finals and had to lose twice. Seasonal Sharing Baskets return E Currently, the greatest need is for food and monetary donations as specific family needs have not yet been identified. Clothing and toys may also be donated to the campaign, but individuals are asked to wait to purchase specific items until confirmation of the items required is received. “The campaign is primarily focused on family needs; wants are considered secondary. If a want is identified and we can provide it for a child then we certainly want to do that while also providing essentials for the family,” commented Capt Koekhuyt, OPI for the SSB Campaign. Donations will be accepted until the 3rd of December, and can be submitted to your unit representative. Alternately, donations may be dropped off at Building O-125, Rm 102. Please watch for the Military Police’s Fill the Cruiser event planned for mid November, as all donations received directly support the SSB campaign. If you are interested in volunteering to assist with the campaign, please contact your unit representative or Capt Koekhuyt at extension 3937. The Baskets will be distributed to Defense Team members (military and civilian), who are facing unforeseen financial hardship. “There are a variety of reasons that BY | PAR: LEIGHSAH MILLWARD AND | ET CAPT C.L. KOEKHUYT very year, the holiday season inspires many of us to reflect on our lives and to think of those who are less fortunate. It is in this spirit that the Seasonal Sharing Basket (SSB) campaign emerged. As early as 1919, charities provided hampers and gifts to the orphans and widows of soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in the First World War. This tradition continued through the Great Depression and throughout the Second World War. The support of our personnel in need continues today, as we offer assistance to CFB Borden/CFSTG community members through the SSB campaign. Last year, through the generous donations of the CFB Borden/CFSTG community, and the hard work and dedication of volunteers, the SSB campaign supported over 30 CFB Borden/CFSTG Defense Team families, by providing food, clothing, and toys. This year, the committee aims to exceed this goal and to offer even greater support, but they need your help! someone may experience hardship in their life, sometimes its medical issues or a family tragedy. Unexpected events happen which cause families to divert funds that they would typically utilize for bills and expenses to other priorities,” explained Koekhuyt. Members who are experiencing hardship are to contact their unit Padre. The SSB committee aims to respect the privacy of all those who receive support. “It is not often that we get the opportunity to support those we work with, our colleagues, and friends,” says Koekhuyt. “Even though personnel won’t know who it is in the Borden community that they have provided assistance to, their efforts make a huge impact. I can tell you from previous years that the families that do receive assistance are very, very grateful for whatever support that they receive.” By supporting worthwhile initiatives such as the SSB campaign, we are able to strengthen our Defense Team Family by fostering a nurturing and supporting environment in which all members may feel valued and experience a sense of belonging. The trees were all started from seeds collected from local apple trees last autumn, by club member Ron Reid. He has grown apple and oak trees over the last 5 years from local seed. The Club planted the trees with peat moss for nutrient and moisture retention, laid landscape fabric and mulch to deter weeds, and finished it off with a mesh protector and stake to protect it. “My goal from the beginning was to use these trees to enhance wildlife habitat,” explained Reid. “At the Rod and Gun, our motto is conservation, and this project was an opportunity for us to give back to nature. T here are 17 CFNs, with a combined distribution of 81,000; however, their combined reach is far greater – one million strong across Canada. This year, CFNs from coast to coast are celebrating the the 74th year of National Newspaper Week, which takes place Oct. 5-11. The theme - Newspapers: The Foundation of Vibrant Communities - reinforces the integral role newspapers play in communities across the country, large and small. The goal of the CF newspaper has remained the same over time: to provide relevant and interesting information about the military community to the defence team, followed by the secondary goals to promote esprit de corps, and serve as a link between the local business community and the Base. CF newspapers report on military operations, morale and welfare programs, and the military community at large. They have dual essential roles – they serve as internal communications for the Base/Wing they serve, and as an external public relation product. “One of my proud accomplishments when I was the Base Commander at Canadian Forces Support Unit Ottawa was B.J. Moving to Ottawa Free Report shows average neighbourhood prices and highest crime areas. MacKenzie, Local Lawyer Angus 705-424-1331 MURDER AND REAL ESTATE LAW? couple of recent cases where a husband is charged with murdering his wife raise a quandary of legal, moral and humanist issues. Surprisingly, being convicted of murdering a spouse has implications in real estate law. Assuming the unhappy couple owned their house as joint tenants , what happens to the property if one spouse is convicted of murdering the other? As joint tenants, since one spouse died, the murdering spouse should own the entire property. Is this fair? Ontario courts are clear. A joint tenants "right of survivorship" is a rule of law and does apply where one joint tenant murders his or her co-tenant. Ontario courts also uphold the principle that a person may not gain from their own wrongful act. For example, you cannot collect on a life insurance policy if you have murdered the policy holder. Would Uncover More Legal Grounds at: this principle prevent ownership of the property from automatically transferring to the spouse convicted of murder? No, but the courts have not allowed murderers to gain from their wrongful acts. To reconcile the conflict between the two principles, the courts impose a trust on the interest transferred by the right of survivorship. The convicted spouse would hold one half of the property in trust for the estate of murdered spouse and the other half of the property on his or her own account (criminals do no forfeit their property rights). In this way, the courts have been able to uphold the right of survivorship without allowing a murderer to benefit from the crime.
