The word of the Lord comes truly from your mouth.’… ‘A great prophet has arisen in our midst’ and ‘God has visited His people.’” We read that Jesus breathed on the apostles, when He gave power to forgive sins. We recall a few weeks ago, the Spirit came upon the Church at Pentecost. The first story of creation finds God offering His breath, the ‘ruah Yahweh’ when God gave Adam his living soul. Today, the Word of God reveals two widows, now suffering the loss of their sons. The compassion of the prophet and the concern of Jesus, restores life to the lifeless bodies. Both are returned to their mothers. Jesus continues to restore life through the healing in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick. Both are viable signs of His mercy, offering health, strength and resistance to evil. TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SPIRITUAL EXCERPT FROM MOTHER TERESA “I try to give to poor people for love what the rich could get for money,” she said. “No, I may not touch a leper for a thousand dollars; yet I willingly cure him for the love of God.” To those who say, “I am only one person, I can’t save the world,” she replied, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” Always the realist, she offered, “Jesus said love one another. He didn’t say love the whole world.” She also knew there was something worse than material deprivation. “Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat.” It is impossible to understand her work without understanding what she meant by this statement. TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION BLACK AND INDIAN MISSIONS Today’s Second Collection is in support of the Church’s ongoing ministry to the Black and Indian Missions. Your financial contribution helps provide the presence of missionaries in African American, Native American and Alaska Native missions, schools, and religious education programs. Thank you for your prayerful support of the Black and Indian Missions Collection. WE OFFER OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO Fr. Robert DeJulio on the 40th Anniversary of his Priestly Ordination and Fr. Herbert DeGaris on the 25th Anniversary of his Priestly Ordination TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 1 Kings 17:17-24 The child of the mistress of the house where Elijah sojourned became ill and died. The woman pleaded with Elijah who took the son and prayed over him. When the child revived, Elijah returned him to his mother who recognized Elijah as "a man of God." Second Reading: Galatians 1:11-19 Paul proclaims the Gospel, not as human, but coming from the revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul continues to acknowledge his own sinfulness and call to grace. Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 The Gospel continues to recount the miracles and healing powers of Jesus. As Jesus neared the gates to the city of Nain, they came upon a deceased young man who was being carried out of the city. His mother, a widow, and a large crowd accompanying the body, met Jesus on the way. Compassionately, Jesus comforts the weeping mother and restores life to the dead man. Many may remember these two wonderful Priests who faithfully served us here at St. Catharine’s Church, Fr. DeJulio from 1972-1979 and Fr. DeGaris from 2000-2004. We continue to pray that young men and women may hear and respond with open and generous hearts to the Lord’s call. And, we pray for the gift of courage to follow His call. If today, you hear His voice … PARISH BLOOD DRIVE TODAY, JUNE 5th, 9 AM-1:30 PM, CAFETERIA Our Parish Blood Drive is today from 9:00 AM through 1:30 PM in the school’s cafeteria. At least 56 days must have passed since your last donation. Thank you for giving the gift of life! SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2016 TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME dear Padre Is taking just the host full participation? Do PARISH JUBILEE MASS SILVER & GOLD ANNIVERSARIES SATURDAY, JUNE 18th AT 5:00 PM At the 5:00 Mass on Saturday, June 18th, we will honor our married couples who are celebrating their 25th and 50th Anniversaries of Sacramental Marriage. They will be offered a chance to gather with family and friends and renew their vows during this Mass. Light refreshments will be served following Mass. Registration for this very special event may be arranged through our Parish Office, 359-0542. We offer prayers and heartfelt congratulations to all of our couples. FATHER’S DAY OBSERVANCE SUNDAY, JUNE 19th AT 9:30 AM In the United States, Father’s Day is a celebration that honors Fathers and Fatherhood and the wonderful influence of Fathers in our society. This coming Father’s Day, as we make time to remember the love and many sacrifices of our Fathers and Grandfathers, let us also pause to say a prayer for all of them, both living and deceased. ST. CATHARINE’S CHILDREN’S CHOIR AT SPECIAL FATHER’S DAY MASS SUNDAY, JUNE 19th, 9:30 AM Our Children’s Choir will be singing at the 9:30 AM Family Mass on Father's Day, June 19th. Please join us as we honor our Fathers in this very special way. Our Family Mass and the Children’s Choir will break for the Summer and will return in the Fall. We will need your support in order to continue this ministry to our young families. If you have any questions, please contact Maureen Aitchison at (845) 359-3027 or Jill Florencia at (845) 365-1869. NEXT WEEK – SECOND COLLECTION FATHER’S DAY INTENTIONS Next week’s Second Collection is for Father’s Day Intentions. Special Religious Father’s Day cards are available from the Ushers tables in the lobby of the Church for those wishing to give their Fathers and Grandfathers a spiritual gift on their special day. If you would like to donate in honor or memory of a loved one, please write the name, insert your offering and place the envelope in the collection basket at any of our Masses next weekend. The names we receive will remain on our Altar for the month of June. FATHER’S DAY NOVENA OF MASSES Father’s Day Novena envelopes are available on the Ushers’ tables in the lobby of the Church. The names of our Fathers, living and deceased, will be enrolled in the special Father’s Day Novena of Masses here at St. Catharine’s, and will remain on our Altar for the month of June. we need both bread and wine to receive Christ’s Body and Blood? If I receive only the host, not the Precious Blood, am I participating fully in the Eucharist? Not to worry, by only taking the host you are participating fully. In the same way, if you only drink from the chalice you are participating fully. Jesus is always fully present in each form – both one and the other. Many times, it is not possible to offer the chalice to a large congregation; and there are also times when one cannot receive the host, especially in sickness, and consuming the Precious Blood is easier. In its teaching on the Eucharist, the Church invites us to receive both: “It is especially fitting to receive Christ in both forms during the celebration of the Eucharist. This allows the Eucharist to appear more perfectly as a banquet, a banquet that is a foretaste of the banquet that will be celebrated with Christ at the end of time when the Kingdom of God is established in its fullness (see Eucharisticum Mysterium, 32).” In John 6, Jesus invites us to both eat and drink, so it is good to do both if you are able. If you aren’t able, or if the chalice isn’t offered at your church, you are still participating fully. Both forms are always present though, because the Priest must always receive both. Fr. Patrick Keyes, CSsR [email protected] BACCALAUREATE MASS, CLASS OF 2016 SUNDAY, JUNE 19th AT 11:00 AM St. Catharine’s will host a Baccalaureate Mass for all members of the Class of 2016, whether high school or college. This special Mass will be held Sunday, June 19th at 11:00 AM. All graduates from TZHS, Albertus Magnus, Bergen Catholic, Don Bosco, St. Joseph’s Regional, AHA, IHA, and their families are especially invited. Light refreshments and fellowship will follow in the Parish Meeting Hall. Anyone interested in participating as an Altar Server, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, or Musician/Singer should contact Mary Anne Pagnani at [email protected]. Junior Parents will be needed to help out with refreshments and we ask that you please contact Mary Anne Pagnani as well. THORPE SENIOR CENTER ANNUAL SPRING FAIR SATURDAY, JUNE 11th, 11 AM-2PM Thorpe Senior Center, located in Sparkill in the Dominican Convent on Route 340, will be having its Annual Spring Fair on Saturday, June 11th from 11 AM to 2 PM. There will be raffles, handmade items, gift items, and homemade bakery items. Proceeds will go to enhance and support Thorpe Senior Center program activities for Seniors in the Orangetown area. Please come and support this program. SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2016 TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOOD QUESTION! What do the letters INRI stand for above Jesus’ head on the top of the cross? The letters indicated are an abbreviation for the Latin text which translates to Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews, which is the inscription Pontius Pilate had written on the cross. “And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the Chief Priests of the Jews to Pilate, “Write not, ‘the King of the Jews,’ but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” John 19:19-22 SIGN OF GLORY Catholics often make the Sign of the Cross casually, just as a nice gesture for beginning and ending their prayers. But, when we learn to take this act seriously, signing ourselves frequently with faith and reverence, remarkable results can take place. We find ourselves doing measurably better in our Christian life: Praying with more Passion, Resisting our bad inclinations more effectively, and Relating to others more kindly. The Sign of the Cross, after all, is not merely a pious gesture. It is a powerful prayer, a sacramental of the Church. RESPECT LIFE MASS ST.
