Quilting Elevated: 2016 Handi Quilter’s Academy Class Descriptions Quilting Elevated offers more than 60 classes, including 27 hands-on classes from which to choose! We encourage you to take a good mix of both lecture-demo classes and hands-on classes to maximize your time at Quilting Elevated. Our educators are able to deliver much more content during a lecture-demo class than they can during a hands-on class. Unlike a hands-on class, you don’t need to wait for everyone in the class to complete the exercise before moving on. This year each participant may select up to 12 hours of hands-on instruction (six hands-on classes). We'll use a range of HQ Pro-Stitcher features from Freehand Record to Repeat to quilt out the many variations. HQ ProStitcher Hands On Spinal Twist We’ll start with a spine for use in borders and overall quilting. But we go beyond feathers to create overall designs, incredible borders, and fabulous fills. This fun technique ensures success for beginning quilters as well as experienced ones. Longarm Hands On 1|Page SS01 Helen Godden Rev Up the Sweet Sixteen With an Aussie Quilt at full throttle and hit maximum overdrive as you put the Grand Prix of quilting machines through its paces. No time for a pit stop in this class as you learn new quilting styles from the maverick of free-motion machine quilting from Down Under. This class will be a full tank of fun and learning, and laughter is guaranteed. Sweet Sixteen Hands On LD01 Kimmy Brunner Transforming Your Work with Templates Part 1: Learn It Did you know that the quickest, easiest way to achieve the look of flawless precision to your quilting is to add template work to your repertoire? In this drawing/design class for the confident beginner/early intermediate level machine quilter, you will learn how to use templates to create great design work with minimal effort. These designs can be combined with both freehand and computerized work to completely change the look of your work. Lecture Demo Take this class to learn the basic theory, and then take Part Two to put what you’ve learned into practice! Please bring a notebook, pencil, and all of your questions. Cameras are always welcome in Kimmy’s classes. LD10 Cheryl Duncan Crosshatching Made Easy In this class you will learn how to use crosshatching to enhance your quilts. You will learn how to set up your grid without using math, as well as how to mark a mitered corner or a corner stone. Learn how to travel around a motif as you stitch your quilt. You will learn how to mark your quilt and then how to use rulers to easily stitch out your design. Lecture Demo PSLD01 Susan Manry Combining Motifs to Customize Your Own Designs Take advantage of the HQ Pro-Stitcher capabilities such as crop, baseline, repeat, new start/end to combine motifs into your own unique design for your own unique quilt. The possibilities are only limited by your own imagination. Susan can help to open up your imagination to all of the possibilities. HQ ProStitcher Lecture Demo 2|Page AS01 Mary Beth Krapil Magic Circles and Rays with Art & Stitch (Part 1 of a series. Take one, two, or all three classes in the series.) Learn the ins and outs of the Magic Circle and Magic Rays tools in Art and Stitch by creating a fabulous block design. Great wholecloth quilts begin with the perfect center medallion. You can take just this class to learn about Magic Circle and Magic Rays OR you can combine this class with the other two classes in the series to create a stunning whole cloth design. PS02 Elaine Gilmore LA02 Kimmy Brunner Thursday, June 8, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Border Magic Participants in this class will use an assortment of motifs and cuts outs from the HQ Pro-Stitcher design library to create and lay out custom borders. When this class is over, you will see designs differently. You’ll be able to use the designs within a design to create unique border quilting options. You’ll also learn how to use New Start and Stop Points to quilt borders without turning the quilt. Transforming Your Work with Templates Part 2: Do It! After you’ve taken Part One to learn the basics, this hands-on class will allow you to get a taste of what it’s like to work with these cool tools. You’ll learn new designs, discover the tips and tricks of accurate marking for a perfect finish, find out how to use a variety of templates safely, and have a great time doing it! Art & Stitch HQ ProStitcher Hands On Longarm Hands On 3|Page SS02 Helen Godden Liberation From The Ditch In the past 10 years teaching all over Australia, Helen Godden has helped hundreds of Aussie quilters step outside their comfort zone and become liberated from the ditch. Helen will reveal her three key secrets to free-motion machine quilting and share over ten basic building blocks of quilting styles. Helen will show you how it’s done Down Under with some Aussie variations. All participants will laugh and learn as Helen holds their hand experiencing just how relaxing and rewarding quilting can be. Sweet Sixteen Hands On LD02 Kerri Rawlins, Cheryl Duncan The Many Faces of Trapunto Join this class covers everything from tried-and-true traditional trapunto techniques, to time-saving tips and tricks. (Wow! Say that five times fast.) Learn batting and thread preferences, as well as how to add trapunto elements on the fly. Your quilts will have just the extra pizazz to make them sing. Lecture Demo LD11 Steffani Burton Running in Quilting Circles and Curves Learn the tricks for making half circles and flattened circles, as well as making perfectly curved lines. Create beautiful quilting designs using swags, clam shells, ovals, arcs, waves, and half circles. Then discover endless ideas for filling internal and external spaces with additional designs. Take advantage of all of the HQ templates that can help you quilt circles and curves, including the new Gold and Silver Circle Sets. Lecture Demo PSLD02 Vicki Hoth Placing Designs in Odd-Shaped Blocks The multi-point areas in HQ Pro-Stitcher opened up so many possibilities for quilting in odd-shaped blocks, whether they be triangles, hexagons, or wonky blocks. This class delves into Areas, using Skew/Align tools, and cropping to make those designs work in any quilt. This class will help you expand your skills for perfect placement as you quilt. Come learn that moving the start and end point can give you some fun rewards! HQ ProStitcher Lecture Demo A&S02 Mary Beth Krapil Creating Block Designs with Art & Stitch (Part 2 of a series. Take one, two, or all three classes in the series.) Using a single motif, create multiple blocks in Art and Stitch using Magic Square. Learn in depth ways of manipulating shapes to create gorgeous designs. Great wholecloth quilts need some stunning block designs to enhance the center medallion. You can take just this class to learn advanced techniques with Magic Square or you can combine this class with the other two classes in the series to create a stunning whole cloth design. But HQ Pro-Stitcher is the perfect way to create custom quilts to take to the next level those quilts that "scream" for custom quilting. Longarm Hands On SS03 Debby Brown Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend Diamonds add a dazzling finish to your quilts. Learn how to create basic diamonds, double diamonds, off-set diamond backgrounds, and more. We will use stencils and rulers/templates to create these gems! Sweet Sixteen Hands On LD03 Kelly Ashton Have You Tried This? New Ways to Use your Longarm Have you tried binding a quilt with your longarm? Or strip pieced a quilt? Or even made a pillow from start to finish? What about making scarves and other apparel? Join us in this class and many of your gift-giving worries are solved. Lecture Demo 5|Page LD12 Susan Manry Creative Textures and Fills Fills are creative design elements used to quilt the background and empty spaces of a primary quilting or block design. Whether elegant, whimsical, structured, or meandering, there is a style to compliment every space. You’ll learn about the effects produced by variety of fill designs, in relation to primary design; how to select appropriate fills to compliment design style, and how to scale and evenly space the fills. Lecture Demo PSLD03 Megan Best Pro-Stitcher Pillow Primer Want an instant room makeover? No need to redo the entire room. Just add a decorative pillow (or three). In this class, Megan will walk you through designing and setting up HQ Pro-Stitcher to make pillow bases up to twice your machine's quilting depth. Then customize with different motifs for a unique look for each pillow. HQ ProStitcher Lecture Demo AS03 Mary Beth Krapil Feathers the Art & Stitch Way (Part 3 of a series. Take one, two, or all three classes in the series.) Feathers are the elegant pinnacle of traditional quilting designs. Who doesn't love feathers? They are even found in the Modern Quilting world! If you’re looking for a class that is packed with good, solid information and plenty of great new design ideas, look no further. By combining different materials, you will create the starting point for one-of-akind bags, home decorative items, and more! She will quilt on laminates, leather, and cuddle fabrics. She'll show you how to use wash-away stabilizer and Soft N Stable for unique quilted creations. Lecture Demo 8|Page PSLD04 Vicki Hoth Everything Fills Learn how to use background fills around appliqué, embroidery, or other shapes to define and accentuate focal points in your quilt. Draw upon the library of A&S fills and HQ designs in combination with HQ Pro-Stitcher features such as cropping and stitch paths to create your masterpiece. HQ ProStitcher Lecture Demo AS04 Linda Matteotti Create Your Own Meander Templates Learn to use the “meander anything” template from the Art & Stitch Library. Take your designs a step further by creating your own meander template for an edge to edge design. You’ll then learn the various ways to place the backgrounds around appliqué designs, how to outline appliqué with stitching, and how to “seamlessly” stitch in the ditch. You’ll also learn how to mark multiple blocks for HQ Pro-Stitcher-driven stitch in the ditch. In short, you’ll learn how to use the Freehand Record feature to create your own quilting designs and to use Freehand Record in conjunction with digital designs. Mix metallic threads and raw-edge appliqué to mix dazzle and sparkle on a Christmas Tree sampler. Your stars will twinkle with gold. The trees are defined with texture and color. Debby made one simple quilt and then made it all over again but changed one quilting element. And then she did it again. And again. And again! Longarm Hands On SS08 Helen Godden Quilt-A-Doodle-Do As Helen says, improving your free-motion quilting is all about practice, practice and more practice. Helen makes that practice fun with "Quilt-A-Doodle-Do”! This class is based on Helen’s unique coloring, doodling, and quilting practice book of designs. All students will work with Helen’s Quilt-A-Doodle-Doo rooster design in class and then “Quilt-A-Doodle-Do” by choose several of Helen’s many styles of free-motion quilting to finish your piece. In this HQ Pro-Stitcher class, we’ll explore all of the options for quilting the perfectly straight line – whether for stitch in the ditch, outlining sashing, borders, and blocks, or for cross-hatching and chevron motifs. If you are hesitant about using rulers, you will love them after this class. Learn to handle rulers and templates safely and properly with the ruler base, as well as how to work with rulers to achieve amazing designs. You’ll learn such techniques as: straight-line quilting, fast continuous-curve method, right angles and echo quilting, Crosshatching, and piano keys and borders.
