Welcome
A Message From Our Principal
Welcome to Coronado’s Global Leadership Academy, the home
of the Coyotes! We take pride in the PACK, our “A” rated,
Excelling legacy, our exceptional and highly qualified teachers
and staff, our involved parents, and our hardworking and
focused students.
“Coronado teachers put their
heart into their work.”
Maura Landers-Mann,
Teacher, Grade 5
Our mission is to prepare students to be successful leaders in
a global society. Coyotes will be challenged with the 4 C’s of
the 21st Century, learning to be critical thinkers, collaborators,
communicators and creators of the future. In addition to a world class curriculum,
extracurricular activities and programs, we assure the unique interests and needs of each
child are met.
Students build their leadership skills by starting with good decision-making for
themselves, their families, friends and world. Coyotes learn to take leadership in their own
lives by setting goals, working collaboratively and through service learning. Engagement in
community service projects teaches compassion for others. We challenge our students to
solve important problems in school-wide themes like “Feast or Famine,” to explore world
hunger or the impact of clean water on our world. Coyotes make a difference.
Our connections to schools around the world prepare our students to work in a global,
technologically advanced society. We utilize technology supports such as Accelerated
Reader to encourage independent reading, computer programs to accelerate learning
in a self-paced learning format. Our world class events and activities include: The
Chinese Culture Club, Young Astronauts, Lego Robotics, Athletes in Training, Turkey Trot,
Recognition Ceremonies, Geography Bee, Future Cities and the Spring Musical.
We are driven to excellence and our commitment to create an engaging, high achievement,
learning environment for all our students. Join us as we prepare Coyotes to be successful
leaders in a global society!

Mandarin Connections at Coronado School
Coronado Elementary School is the first in Higley Unified School District
to offer Mandarin as a world language to elementary students. There are
two models for learning open to our students. An after-school club is
available for students to learn about the culture, language and customs of
the Mandarin speaking countries such as: China, Taiwan, and Singapore.
Games, exercises, art, music and projects will introduce students to the
Asian countries in our Chinese Culture Club. During the school day, our
Intern Teacher from China will reinforce parallel concepts in Chinese and
English for social studies. A world of possibilities will be opened as they
see that countries are more alike than different.
We are also excited to offer the most effective way to master a second
language for children called the Mandarin Choice Program for an immersion
style learning environment. This spring, kindergarten and first grade
parents can apply for the Mandarin Dual Language Program to start in
the 2014 - 2015 school year. Past experience has shown that students
who study in this format generally compete as well or better than average
in achievement and develop superior language skills in both English and
Mandarin. Two teachers are assigned to the class, one is a native English
speaker and one is a native Mandarin speaker. This assures that students
have excellent role models as they develop the languages. Math and
science are taught mainly in Mandarin and language arts and social studies
are taught primarily in English. This model has been extremely successful
across numerous states including Utah, Oregon, and Minnesota.
Coronado students will have a chance to expand their skills for the 21st
century through the Mandarin Connections Project. The standard social
studies curriculum will be infused with a global perspective with guest
teachers from China for all grades kindergarten through sixth. The Chinese
Culture Club is available for students after school. The Mandarin Choice
program is a dual language approach in a partial immersion model. If you
are interested in applying for openings for the most effective method to
teach a second language in elementary school, contact the office for an
application packet.

Coronado’s Mandarin Choice Program is enrolling kindergarten and
first grade students now for the 2014-2015 School Year based on class
availability. Mandarin Choice is a partial immersion program designed
to teach a world language when students’ learning effectiveness is at its
highest; in the primary grades. Students are placed in a 50/50 model of
instruction with a Mandarin and English teaching team. Half the day is
immersed in Mandarin for math and science and the other half is reading,
writing and social studies taught in English. Students have the potential to
master two languages with superior ability. We call this a “Kindergarten to
College” progression, opening a world of possibilities to our students.
What are the proven benefits of acquiring second language skills?
• High proficiency in the immersion language
• Performance on English standardized tests meets or exceeds nonimmerison students
• Promotes greater cognitive flexibility, increased attention control,
better memory, and superior problem solving skills
• Enhanced understanding of primary language
• Increased cultural sensitivity
• Better prepared for the future in a global society
Why learn the Chinese language?
Chinese is the most widely spoken first language in the world. The
Mandarin dialect is the official language of the People’s Republic of China
and Taiwan. It is understood in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore,
Brunei, the Philippines, and Mongolia. Children can also move on to master
additional languages.
Why an immersion program?
Research indicates immersion programs better help students attain high
levels of second language proficiency. Children thrive in this type of
learning environment and love learning new languages.
Enrollment will be offered on a “first come, first served”
basis along with gender balancing.
