COVER STORY
On May 14th, McAbee brought back
and hosted a charity motorcycle ride.
Proceeds, over $15,000, were donated
to the DCH Hope Assistance Fund for
Cancer Patients. The event began at the
Northport Civic Center and followed
a one-hour scenic route through the
county, ending at Rhythm and Brews.
In addition to the ride, a raffle was held
with prizes donated by local vendors.
The weather was beautiful, the bikes
were shiny, and everyone had a great
time.

April 30th, McAbee participated in the
annual JLT (Junior League of Tuscaloosa)
Dragon Boat races. McAbee placed 7th
overall with a team best of 1:05 on their
second race. 32 different teams came
out to participate in the event, and JLT
raised over $50,000 for the community
of Tuscaloosa.
On the evening of April 30th, McAbee
helped sponsor the annual BBQ and
Blues event at the Tuscaloosa Regional
Airport. The event benefits the DCH
Foundation. It is a fun night with great
music, food (cooked by McAbee’s
Pigfitters), fellowship, a silent auction,
and the opportunity to purchase keysto open locks for fabulous prizes! The
theme this year was “Top Gun”- a very
appropriate name for the location!
Involvement
COMMUNITY
The second semester of the 20152016 school year, we officially became
partners with TCTA (Tuscaloosa Career
Technology Academy) in the Adopt-ASchool Program. We will specifically
focus on the welding program, but will
offer assistance and mentor any of the
other career tech programs interested.
On April 29th, we helped sponsor the
welding program’s annual “Welding
Day” activities. Think of it as field day,
but for welding. Students signed up
for different competitions such as
best bead weld, TIG, plasma cutting,
even cleanest booth area. Winners of
each category received prizes donated
by McAbee Construction and other
generous vendors. The students also
were provided a breakfast snack and
lunch. In conjunction with “Welding
Day”, representatives from GO BUILD
ALABAMA were on site to observe and
document the event. TCTA was selected
as part of the “Fly the Flag” program, and
Go Build Flew their big red flag above the
school all week long in recognition and
support of career technical programs.

Plant Miller
Added a second shift and proceeded with
the crucial parts of the transfer house
project.
- Consisted of the demolition of the existing
coal chutes and installation of the new
stainless chute system fabricated by our
sheet metal shop.
- All coal burned at Plant Miller comes
through this transfer house- we had
to complete this entire project without
interrupting its flow to the plant.
- This proved to be a difficult constraint that
took weeks of planning and coordination
to overcome, but through careful planning
with APC Fuels team, along with an elite
rigging and construction crew, we were able
to complete the project seven days ahead of
schedule.
- The analogy most commonly used was
“We are doing a triple bypass on one of the
largest power plants in the southeast”.
PLANT MILLER
Plant Barry
Completed the installation of the Auxiliary
Boiler System. Currently performing startup support for SCS and beginning the
installation of a Redundant DSI System
including structural, piping, equipment, and
electrical disciplines.
Kemper County
Awarded the maintenance contract for
Plant Ratcliffe, expected to begin work under
this contract Q4.
Currently building a workforce and
adding more office/safety/QC personnel
to fit the specific requests outlined in the
Maintenance agreement.
Current on-site activities include support for
Start-up, Construction & Plant.
Sheet metal is currently working on a Skid
for Kemper County.
We were also selected to replace and
reinforce several bridges within the plant,
along with Ash piping replacement, and
several other projects involved with the Unit
Two Precip outage.
- All done recordable free!
2nd Quarter we worked 37,664 safe manhours at Plant Miller. During this time,
we completed the MRCS project and U2
Precipitator outage mechanical work. The
majority of the work took place on the No. 1
Transfer House outage during April & May.
Crews worked around the clock to demolish
two separate systems of coal chutes while
maintaining operation at all times. These
systems were replaced with the fabricated
chute sections in house by our sheet metal
division. 3D scanning and CAD technology
allowed the engineer to virtually “test-fit”
each segment before installation. The new
coal transfer system is the first of its kind
in Southern Company’s fleet and required
considerable
coordination
between
Alabama Power, McAbee Construction,
and Acensium to complete according to
schedule.

Worked a shut down in March (peak
manpower 90)
- Primarily replaced piping and tanks for the
Mill Acid System.
- Also replaced all Stock Chest Piping.
Throughout the mill, we are currently
performing miscellaneous concrete work.
March – June we will be assisting with mill
clean-up removing many years’ of stored
parts and other unused items.
Already beginning pre-work for October
outage. Will be working on more of the
Acid system, Steam joint replacements, Mill
Water Piping, and replacement of Chrome
890 Steam valves.
GP Pennington
Towel seven log saw, and conveyor install
begins August 8 expected to last ten days.
The annual outage will be Sept. 12 – 21.
IP Prattville
The concrete work of the Fram Project is
progressing.
Fall outage will be mid-October through the
end of November.
IP Vicksburg
New customer for us this year – working as
secondary maintenance for the mill.
Annual outage completed in May with 35
men for 14 days.
Plant Gaston
2nd quarter wrapped up current work
at Plant Gaston. During May, Jim Mills
completed the installation of HDPE gypsum
lines to the gypsum pond.
Rome
Crews are performing work on multiple
capital piping and concrete jobs.
- DeMin Trailer- Stainless steel piping
- Clarifier Outlet and Steel piping (525 ft of
30” pipe)
Cedar Springs
HD Tank Roof job is 60% complete and on
schedule.

Prepping for the annual fall outage to begin
in September
Just finished Holiday outage from July 2nd10th.
Plant Gorgas
Completed work in the new electric building.
Will begin Demolition of an old building this
week- hiring more employees to help with
this project.
Plant Gorgas worked 2,875 safe hours during
2nd quarter providing mechanical support
to Marcum Electric in finishing the Plant’s
new Fuels Handling electrical building. The
successful switch-over happened during the
Spring outage allowing McAbee to demolish
the old electrical building. Demolition began
in July and will wrap up in August.

diesel hydro-treaters that remove sulfur
compounds from diesel streams at transmix
facilities. (same description as above)
Five modules are in development with a
final destination of a transmix facility in
Huntington, IN.
CPG Allied Energy
Fabricating Modular diesel hydro-treaters
that remove sulfur compounds from diesel
streams at transmix facilities. Transmix is
the result of using pipelines to transport
petroleum fractions such as gasoline, jet
fuel, and diesel fuels. Transmix facilities
separate those fuels. These modules will
produce ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to be in
compliance with government regulations,
and whose byproduct will be liquid fertilizer.
Three modules are in development with
a final destination of a transmix facility in
Birmingham, AL.

The column is 4’-6” ID x 118”-11” WS/WS &
the materials of construction are Grade 5
Chrome, Carbon Steel, & Monel 400 Clad
Carbon Steel.

26-27th
was
the
Annual
Manufacture Alabama Conference in
Orange Beach, Alabama. The two-day
event is an opportunity for Safety and
HR professionals from manufacturing
companies around the state to meet,
network, and learn about many
different and new safety/HR programs.
Congratulations to all of McAbee
Construction for achieving a FIRST
PLACE finish in the 2015 Manufacture
Alabama Safety Achievement Program.
Employees and supervisors had to
maintain an impressive safety record
along with many other difficult criteria to
compete and win this prestigious honor!

Unrelated to Construction- But
football season will be upon us before
we know it! Only 40 days until The
Alabama Crimson Tide kicks off in
Arlington against The University of
Southern California Trojans. It has
been many years since these two
teams have met and it is expected to
be quite a match up! Tune in Saturday,
September 3rd @ 7:00 pm for all the
excitement!
The Annual McAbee Health, Safety,
and Wellness Fair will take place on
Wednesday, October 19th this year.
As always it will be a great event with
much information about healthy
opportunities in our community, along
with treats from local vendors, the
opportunity for annual vaccinations
(flu/TDAP) and a healthy lunch!
Health Fair!
Year two of Worlds of Work is
approaching quickly! October 1314th are the dates! The construction
world has grown even larger this
year with even better activities for the
students. This year the Construction
World is going to resemble an
actual job site with a section for
residential, commercial, and heavy
industrial. The students will get to
observe, participate, and experience
a simulated job site for each type of
construction. We are very excited
about the event and will keep you
posted on visitation and activity times.
