ne of the top tennis players in the United States, Andy Roddick currently serves as one of
Deliver the Dream’s celebrity spokespersons and close friends. In keeping with its mission
of “Helping Children Today for Tomorrow,” the Andy Roddick Foundation recently
announced its pledge of $80,000 to Deliver the Dream to fund its family retreat program.
Blanche Roddick, Andy’s mother, is a major force behind
the Foundation and has facilitated its partnership with DTD.
“As an organization committed to helping families and children,
we are pleased and proud to be a part of Deliver the Dream’s
mission. We hope that this contribution will enhance the DTD
program and allow DTD to reach out to more children
and families who need their help.” Continued on page 3

Golf - Georgia Style – “Delivers the Dream”!
Toyota Mall of Georgia Annual Charity Golf Tournament
By Rick Catlett
President, Gator
Bowl Association
Deliver the Dream had an exceptionally
eventful and successful year! In 2006, we
held 15 retreats serving 192 families and
834 family participants, the highest number served since the program’s inception.
Also this past year, we welcomed two
new members to the board, Rosie Puello
Burkman and Jennie Orians Williams.
Rosie is vice president of marketing for
JM&A Group, a division of JM Family
Enterprises, and has recently been
appointed as chair of the Marketing
Committee for Deliver the Dream.
Jennie, a former vice president with
First Union Bank, joined the board in
October. She and her husband John,
owner of Toyota Mall of Georgia, reside
in Atlanta, and Jennie will be co-chairing
DTD’s newly formed Atlanta Alliance.
In 2007, our objective is to repeat last
year’s phenomenal success in conducting
15 retreats, serving nearly 900 family
participants. Part of the funding for these
programs came from DTD’s three major
events, Denim and Diamonds, Jeans and
Dreams and the JM Lexus Charity Golf
Event. Last year, these events combined
to raise nearly $600,000. With your
continued support, we can take this to
an even higher level in the coming year.
On behalf of the Board of Directors,
THANK YOU to all of the donors,
volunteers, event sponsors and medical
advisory staff for all that you do. You
helped make 2006 a year to remember!
From everyone at Deliver the Dream,
we wish you a Happy and Healthy 2007.
T
oyota Mall of Georgia’s
annual charity golf tournament recently raised
$81,250 for Deliver the Dream
retreats. The tournament, in its
fifth year, raised funds to benefit
Atlanta-area families facing
serious illness or crisis.
More than 120 golfers hit the
links at the world-renowned
TPC Sugarloaf Golf Course in Duluth,
Georgia. The TPC course has hosted
numerous PGA Tour events and
provided the ideal setting for this year’s
event. The tournament was kicked
off by an entertaining long-drive
exhibition by Trick Shot Artist Rocky
“Rockstar” Shipes, then followed by an
end-of-play shoot out, barbeque lunch
and awards ceremony.
Continued from page 1 - Andy Roddick Foundation
Founded in 2001, the Andy Roddick Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that strives to improve the quality of life and
enhance educational and economic opportunities for all children and families in need. All benefiting organizations aid in the
development of at-risk children and families, including those that have been abused and neglected.
Headquartered in Boca Raton, the success of the Andy Roddick Foundation is largely due to the tremendous support from
Roddick’s family and friends. Led by the philanthropic spirit of Andy and his mother, Blanche Roddick, the Andy Roddick
Foundation staff consists solely of unpaid volunteers who work tirelessly year-round. Not only do they raise money for the
Foundation, but they also increase the overall awareness of the unfortunate realities of children in need.
For more information about the Foundation, call the Andy Roddick Foundation at (561) 620-9449 or visit arfoundation.org.

member of DTD’s board of directors.
“Thanks to our generous corporate sponsors and hard-working volunteers, the success of this tournament will help local families in crisis,” said John Williams, owner
and dealer principal of Toyota Mall of Georgia. “By coming together for a great day
of golf, we helped ensure Deliver the Dream’s mission of enabling those in need to
regain strength, mend spirits and just be families and kids again.”
Congratulations to award winners G&K Services (top team), David Williams

E
veryone has their own unique way of giving back
as recently demonstrated by four associates from
JM Family Enterprises’ Internal Audit Department.
It all started when Ryan Sneir, a frequent traveler, returned
to his office with a shaved head. Ryan, after receiving
a lot of good-natured teasing from his fellow associates,
challenged them to also “take it all off.” Bill Dakak was
the first to accept Ryan’s challenge, but on the condition
his fellow associates pay him to do so. Bill next challenged
fellow associate Joe Arndt, who agreed but only if all the
money collected from shaving their heads be donated to
Deliver the Dream. Not to be left out, Jarrett Smith joined
these three in their quest. On September 7, after soliciting
other departments to support their cause, Ryan, Bill, Joe
and Jarrett headed to Salon 185, JMFE’s on-site hair salon.
More than $500 was raised as a result of these four
“taking it all off.”

T
he Wasie Foundation has announced Deliver the Dream is a
recipient of a $45,000 grant to be used in support of a retreat for
children with brain tumors and their families referred by Chris Evert
Children’s Hospital. The Wasie Foundation serves as an enduring legacy
of Minneapolis trucking pioneer Stanley Wasie and his wife, Marie. Marie
Wasie’s abiding interest in the welfare of the young is reflected in the
foundation’s effort to create a brighter future for children with medical
problems. Deliver the Dream is deeply grateful to The Wasie Foundation
for its assistance as we strive to provide care for families facing crisis as
a result of serious illness or the loss of a family member.

ince 2002, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has served as one of
Deliver the Dream’s not-for-profit healthcare partners, referring families with
individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Karen Dresbach, president of
the Multiple Scleroris Society South Florida Chapter, has been a key facilitator of the
Society’s partnership with Deliver the Dream. Since its inception, Deliver the Dream
has conducted three family retreats with the Multiple Sclerosis Society South Florida
Chapter, providing medical and psycho-social support to nearly 150 family participants
affected by multiple sclerosis.
The mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis. Since the
organization was formed, it has kept its eyes on this ultimate goal. The Society and its network of chapters nationwide
promote research, educate, advocate on critical issues, and organize a wide range of programs – including support for the
new diagnosed and those living with MS over time. For information about the National Multiple Sclerosis Society visit

welcoming facility in the heart of western
North Carolina’s great-out-doors.
One of the six venues used by Deliver the
Dream to carry out its mission, Kanuga
continues to be a favorite with DTD families, volunteers and staff. To date, DTD has
held 18 retreats at this facility bringing hope
and peace to over 900 family participants.

eliver the Dream recently wrapped
up the 2006 retreat year, completing a total of 15 retreat weekends,
serving over 192 families and 834 family
participants, bringing the total of family
participants served by DTD since its
inception to nearly 2,400!
The fall
of 2006
brought
lots of
excitement
to Deliver
the Dream
families.
From the
tropical
ambiance of
Sandpiper
Resort, to
the breathtaking views of Amicalola, to the
outdoor beauty of River Ranch, our families
found much-needed happiness, peace
and renewal.
In October, fourteen South Florida families
referred by the American Cancer Society set
off for Sandpiper Resort in Port St. Lucie,
Florida. Families who have a child with a
brain tumor were invited to have fun, relax,
and escape the everyday during this four-day,
three-night retreat. In addition to dressing
for a costume party, participants had the
opportunity to test their skills at water skiing
and sailing, and to feel the thrill of flying
on a trapeze.
During November,
families referred by
Children’s Healthcare
of Atlanta headed north
to Amicalola where they
experienced the beauty
of fall turning to winter
in the scenic mountains of Georgia. While
roasting marshmallows,
hiking to waterfalls, and
participating in a nature
scavenger hunt, these
families, each having a
child with leukemia, were
able to make new friendships and reconnect with
their loved ones.
Deliver the Dream’s final 2006 retreat included
north Florida families referred by St. Vincent’s
Medical Center. We took these families to the
rustic beauty of River Ranch just outside of
Lake Wales, Florida. Cowboy hats, horseback
riding, and adventure were the themes of this
retreat for families who have a parent with
cancer. It was hard to tell who was having
more fun … the kids or the adults!
Lasting memories were created as family
members reached the top of the rock
wall, went horseback riding, and experienced an airboat ride through the lush
marshes of the Kissimmee River.
Fifteen retreats are once again scheduled
to be held in 2007. We are excited at the
opportunity to help even more families
experience the magic of Deliver the
Dream. For more information, please

My Deliver the Dream Experience
My Journey from a DTD Family to a DTD Volunteer
By Bobbie Potter
My name is Bobbie Potter.
My journey started in May
2004 when my precious daughter Terri, a 42 year-old single
mother of three, a 7-year-old girl
and two young adult boys, was
diagnosed with cancer. Although
her doctors gave her only a small
chance of survival, we decided
to proceed with treatment which
included radical surgery, intensive chemotherapy and radiation.
The effects of the therapy were
more difficult to deal with than
any of us had expected. Terri
was sick most of the time and consequently I moved in with her and my
granddaughter to help take care
of her many responsibilities.
After six months of therapy, we
were all exhausted and emotionally
drained. It was in Terri’s last weeks
of radiation when the staff of St.
Vincent’s oncology group referred our
family to attend a Deliver the Dream
retreat. A four-day vacation free of
therapy (that sounded good) at a
place where we would be pampered
and spoiled (that sounded great!).
We gladly agreed to attend.
In November 2004, my daughter
Terri, her daughter Chrissy, and I
arrived at St. Vincent’s Hospital, bags
in tow, to board a luxury charter bus
for our trip to Westgate River Ranch
in Lake Wales, Florida. When we
arrived at River Ranch, we were
greeted by yellow-shirted Deliver the
Dream volunteers and staff members,
waving and smiling. We were
welcomed with a Hope-the-Bear
the weekend, we made lots of
friends and memories that will
never be forgotten.
After returning home I wrote a
thank you letter to Pat Moran
and decided that this was a
program I wanted to give back
to. I wanted to be one of those
yellow-shirted, smiling, excited
volunteers.
Bobby welcomes the Roberts/Henderson Family

stuffed animal for Chrissy and a basket
of goodies, including a camera to
capture special moments at the retreat.
In addition, we were assigned our own
family volunteer who took wonderful
care of us throughout our stay.
During the weekend we encountered
many new experiences; our first
hayride, first horseback ride, and first
rodeo. One early morning, while
lake-side fishing, Chrissy caught her
very first fish. Later that weekend,
we also went on our first airboat ride
touring the scenic Kissimmee River.
Throughout the entire weekend we
were pampered and spoiled, having
our meals served, our beds made, and
by having plenty of time to just relax.
We had a blast, laughing, giggling,
and making new friends. But best
of all, we enjoyed just being a family.
When it was time to leave, we
boarded the bus and those same
smiling, energetic, yellow-shirted
volunteers lined up to wave good-bye.
WOW what a great experience! Over
8
My first volunteer experience
was in November 2005, exactly
one year from the date of my
family experience. The retreat
was held for families with a child
with bleeding disorders referred from
Nemours Children’s Clinic. I was very
excited about the prospect of serving
these families as I had been a nurse in
the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for
22 years. Once again, I was welcomed
with open arms by the Deliver the
Dream staff and volunteers.
During the retreat, I was matched to
a single mother and four wonderful
children. I grew extremely close to this
family very quickly. On just the second
day, the youngest child was calling
me “Memaw”. I laughed and cried
with my DTD family during happy
and emotional times throughout the
weekend.
The weekend was full of long hours
and hard work, but I never seemed to
get tired. I only felt joy seeing all of the
families laughing, playing and enjoying life, as all families should. From
the opening icebreaker to the last wave
as the bus home pulled away, my love
grew for each mom, dad, child and
fellow volunteer. Since then, I have
participated in one other weekend at
the same location in May 2006. The
volunteer experience continues to get
better and better. I hope to have the
opportunity to volunteer again sometime in the near future.
The work that is being done by Deliver
the Dream is so outstanding that both
as a family recipient of their endeavors
and a volunteer worker, I must say….
Thank you, thank you and well
done, well done!!!!
Sincerely,
Bobbie Potter

“Delivering Our Dreams”
Written by: Jack, Andrea, Danita, Phillip, Lynn, Amy, Matt, Doris, Jerrod, Dawn, Lori, Brian, Sharon,

Connecting is sharing memories with new friends
New beginnings that never end.
Families, friendship gaining strength
Faith that goes to any length.
Beautiful surroundings bring us peace
Healing through emotional release.
Volunteers who build our hope,
Tears and laughter help us to cope.
Circumstances may make us fall
But with a positive attitude,
Faith Will Conquer All!
This poem was created on Saturday, December 2, 2006 by the members of the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Adult
Discussion Group at the River Ranch. The theme of this weekend was families who have a parent with cancer.
