Amanda Teter, Client Relationship Manager with UMB on South Holden Street, welcomed the group, acknowledged the elected official present (Mayor Robin Allen) and introduced Travel 45 and Joey. Joey spoke to the group about the specialized and personalized services that she provides her clients - true customer service, from start to finish. She has 21+ years experience in the travel industry, from corporate to family to leisure, and said she loves getting to help make people happy. She made two attendees VERY happy with the two $100 discount certificates they won! Scott Patrick and Gale Matthews were the lucky winners, and several other attendees won small journals and flashlights Joey also generously gave away. For more information about Travel 45 visit their Facebook page or call 660-429-1234. www.warrensburg.org 2 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony On Wednesday October 14, the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce had the pleasure of officially welcoming Tranquility Shop into the Chamber with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony. The shop was crowded with customers as this was also their Grand Opening. Apple cider, coffee and homemade molasses cookies were served as customers and Ribbon Cutting attendees browsed through the selection of essential oils, teas, stones and crystals, books, CDs, scarves, jewelry and more. Member Relations Committee member Rick Squiric welcomed the crowd, introducing Becky and Tom Axton, store owners, and several family members also in attendance. Becky spoke about her desire to create a place that supports natural healing and tranquility, as a service to the community she grew up in and loves. The back room of the shop will in the future be used for classes and demonstrations relating to the shop's offerings of stress-relief and self-care. To find out more about Tranquility Shop visit their Facebook page or call 660-362-0788. www.warrensburg.org 3 Chamber Networking Breakfast At the Chamber networking breakfast on October 14, UCM President Charles Ambrose gave a thorough update to attending Chamber members and guests, including a review of the current state of the University and plans for the future. Dr. Ambrose spoke to the three things that students hire the University to do: 1. help with access to an education, 2. help with finishing their degree, and 3. graduating with a meaningful degree. That all comes down to managing four things, he said: cost, time, skills, and debt. He touched briefly on the need to improve and expand housing options on campus, noting that it's important to have a balance between on-campus options that can help with student retention and success and off-campus housing that benefits both students and property owners. He thanked Senator David Pearce, present at the breakfast, for his steadfast commitment to higher education, noting that the environment for such support in Missouri is much better than many of our surrounding states. New Chamber members also introduced themselves: Ashely Hurr with F&C Bank in Warrensburg, Brooklynn Wagner with Pita Pit, Barry Henderson with PrintLynx, Lorin Walker with the Management Department at UCM, and Casey Flowers with the Warrensburg Neighbors publication. Tony's Restaurant did a fantastic job with breakfast, and they can cater all kinds of events! For more information find them on Facebook or call 660-747-7748. www.warrensburg.org 4 Project SERVE to Provide Needed Community Service Are you interested in serving others in our community? Project SERVE allows individuals and groups in local communities the opportunity to help individuals meet needs they are unable to provide for themselves. There will be a number of service projects during these two days, including yard work, painting, building birdhouses, singing, and helping sort medication. If you have an interest in providing needed service to individuals in our community, please contact Erica Collins ([email protected]) or Doug Christie ([email protected]) for more information. Recent performances include recitals in Barbados, Finland, and Sweden. The concert will feature, among other works, performances of German composer Johann Christian Fischer’s “Concerto No. 1 in C Major,” 20th century composer Benjamin Britton’s “Six Metamorphoses After Ovid, Op. 49” and Giovanni Daelli’s “Fantasy on Themes from Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto.’” A collaborative pianist and harpsichordist, Becker is professor of music at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee and also performs with the Kenosha Symphony. Mattson is a member of the UCM Department of Music faculty and also performs with the Lee's Summit Symphony. Financial Time’s columnist Lucy Kellaway, one of the most interesting observers of today’s work environment, readily admits she has over 100 voice mails in her inbox and has no plans to listen to any of them. If you are like Lucy, you may be missing some worthwhile information. Although the buzz is that voice mail is dead, important-to-you people still use it. Think how long it is taking for the fax machine to die. It’s like a vampire -- drive a stake into that machine please! But if you aren’t listening to your voice mails in a timely manner, at least keep a recorded voice mail message that informs those who do phone you that “the best way to leave me a message is……” If you want an interesting history of voice mail, read Lucy Kellaway’s article, “Voicemail’s message for the office phone: ‘it’s over’.” One Easy Step to Improve Conversation: Put the Phone Away Sherry Turkle, author of “Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age,” has been studying the psychology of online connectivity for more than 30 years. Recently she’s been asking, “What has happened to face-to-face conversation in a world where so many people say they would rather text than talk?” In her recent New York Times article “Stop Googling. Let’s Talk” she says, “Studies of conversation both in the laboratory and in natural settings show that when two people are talking, the mere presence of a phone on a table between them or in the periphery of their vision changes both what they talk about and the degree of connection they feel. People keep the conversation on topics where they won’t mind being interrupted. They don’t feel as invested in each other. Even a silent phone disconnects us.” Change the landscape. Try this one easy step for the next thirty days. Don’t have your phone out when you are talking to someone face-to-face or at meetings. Try it at home as well. Prep Your Conversation Tongue-tied when it comes to conversation? Andrew Reid, founder of Vision Critical says, “have something that’s current, on topic, and interesting on hand to talk about. Whether that’s the latest article on the tech crunch, a business book you've just read, or something current from your twitter stream. You can inject that interesting content into conversations easily and get the whole group involved.” Note: This is Tip # 31 from our 88 Positive Networking® Tips for Conferences quick guide.
