As I sat at my desk pondering how best to put into
words the joy that comes with summer, I thought
about the cold winter mornings, waking in the dark
and rushing to the hot shower to warm up. And then I
found a quote that sums it up so beautifully:
"What good is the warmth of
summer, without the cold of
winter to give it sweetness." ~
John Steinbeck.
See? Those miserable, cold winter mornings
were worth it! They make these warm, sunny
mornings oh so much more divine by contrast!
So here’s the rub: Why do any of us bother leaving Edmonton during these hot-hot-hot months?
Growing up, my family booted it out of town at
this time of year. Now that I have kids of my own,
it’s rare that we roam too far away. We live in Alberta, after all! There’s SO much to see and do!

your family like to venture to in the summer? Use

Brain Development
T H E EA R LY Y EA R S
SUBMITTED BY THE HEALTHY PARENTS, HEALTHY CHILDREN TEAM
Babies are already learning even before they are born. Brain development begins during pregnancy and continues into adult years. At birth, the brain is about
one-quarter the size of an adult’s brain and is made up of billions of neurons (nerve
cells that are in the brain and nervous system).
“The brain guides growth
and development. By understanding how the brain
works, you can help your
child develop and grow,”
says Suzanne Blair, Program Coordinator with the
Alberta Health Services
Early Childhood Team.
Building the brain is
like building a house
A newborn’s brain is like a house that is being
built. The walls and doors are up, but the wiring
isn’t all in place. There is still a lot of work to be
done.
IN A HOUSE
• The structure is built starting on the ground.
• The base or foundation is set, the walls are
built and the electrical system is wired—all
in an exact order.
• The electrical wiring lets the electrical signals reach all parts of the house.
• A strong foundation supports everything
that’s built on top of it.
IN THE BRAIN
• The basic structure forms during pregnancy.
• The ‘wiring’ of the brain starts as neurons
begin to connect with each other.
• Connections continue to develop into the
early adult years.
• These connections help the brain communicate with the nervous system.
Things to know about your child’s
developing brain
• Brain structure and early brain cell connections are affected by:
• what your child is born with—inherited
traits and abilities (nature)
• what your child experiences, the care
he’s given, and the relationships he has
with other people (nurture)
• The most important time for brain development is during pregnancy and the early
years. This is when the foundation is set for
future learning, behaviour and health.
• Brain cells form connections with each other
so signals can pass from one part of the brain
to another. These processes make it possible
for children to grow, think and learn.
• Simple connections form first. They form the
basis for more complex pathways that come
later. This pattern continues for many years.
• Brain cell connections are created through
everyday experiences, interactions and the
things that children see, hear, touch, taste
and smell.
• The more often the experience happens,
whether positive or negative, the stronger
that brain connection becomes.
Interactions support
brain development
For healthy brain development, children need
positive relationships with their moms, dads and
other important adults in their lives.
Relationships are formed through everyday interactions. Interactions go back and forth between
people, like the serve-and-return interactions
in a game of tennis or volleyball. For example,
when your baby coos or gazes at your face, he’s
‘serving the ball’ to you. When you smile back,
talk gently and return the gaze, you’re ‘returning
the ball’ to him.
Positive serve-and-return interactions are important all through your child’s life because
they build brain cell connections throughout the
brain. These connections are needed to learn
new skills in all areas of development (e.g., moving his body, regulating his emotions).
“It takes many years for the brain to develop. As
your child gets older, brain connections that are
frequently used are strengthened, and connections that are no longer used get pruned away,”
says Blair. “This process of adding, strengthening
and pruning connections will continue throughout your child’s life.”
When you take the time to:
• watch, listen and respond to your child, he
learns that he’s important
• read and talk to him, he learns language
skills
• cuddle and care for him, he learns to trust

The Best Shades
for Your Sun Baby
DR. LAUREEN LATURNAS
It’s summer, and you want your children to spend
as much time as possible in the great outdoors. You
always remember to slather on the sunscreen, but a
lot of parents forget to protect their children’s eyes
from harmful UV rays.
Children actually receive more annual sun exposure than adults because of all the time they
spend outside at recess, playing sports and during playtime. Their developing eyes can’t filter
UV light as well as adults’, which means they are
vulnerable to retinal damage. Also, UV damage
often goes undetected and adds up over time, so
it’s important to start protecting their eyes at an
early age.
Severe damage may result in bloodshot, swollen
eyes and sensitivity to light. In extreme cases, a
sunburn of the eye can lead to vision loss for up
to 48 hours. Vision will eventually return, but the
long-term damage can never be reversed.
Fortunately, there is a simple solution to help you
protect your child’s eyes: sunglasses. They filter
out all of the bad UV light, and by getting children
used to wearing them early, you’re setting them
up with a good habit that will last a lifetime.
Here are some suggestions
to help you find the best shades
for your sun baby:
Look for UVA and UVB protection. This will often
be represented with a sticker or label. If the level of protection isn’t clear, ask for help. Toy sunglasses are not a supplement for the real thing.
Make sure they fit. A proper fit will ensure your
child is getting full protection from UV light. Rubber frames may feel more comfortable behind
children’s ears and provide a snug fit without
pinching.
Don’t break the bank. Tests have shown that inexpensive sunglasses can provide full UV protection. Keep in mind however, that cheap models
may have imperfections that can distort vision
and cause headaches or eye strain. If you want to
ensure your child is wearing a good quality product, it’s best to buy from a reputable professional
or retailer.
Take them shopping. Taking your child along on
the shopping trip will allow them to try the sunglasses on for comfort and style. It gives them a
say in the decision, which will hopefully increase
the chances that they will actually wear them!
A good pair of sunglasses protects both the skin
around the eye and the eye itself. Before choosing sunglasses for your child, it’s a good idea to
see your Doctor of Optometry for a comprehensive eye exam. It will ensure your child’s eyes are
healthy, and your optometrist will be able to take
any current eye conditions into consideration. Alberta Health Care covers the cost of annual eye
exams for children until they turn 19.
For more information or to find a Doctor of Optometry
near you, visit www.optometrists.ab.ca/find-an-optometrist.

The Nurse Practitioner Will See You Now:
BEDWETTING
BY BETTY ANN THIBODEAU & KATHY REID
Does your child continue to wet the bed, even though
most of his or her friends have stopped? If so, here are
a few facts and tips that may help.
Bedwetting or emptying the bladder during sleep
is very common and often runs in families. Most
children stop wetting the bed by about the age of
5 years, but for a small number of children, they
may continue to have bed wetting episodes until
adolescence. If you or your spouse had bedwetting issues, there is an increased chance your
child will and if both of you wet the bed, chances
are high that your child will. Bedwetting is more
common in boys than girls. Staying dry during
the night is the last toilet training stage children
go through. Rarely does bedwetting go on to
adulthood. It is important to know that your child
does not have any control of his/her bedwetting.
Bedwetting may be related to a lack of ability to
wake to the feeling that the bladder is full when
sleeping, may be caused by the child making a
large amount of urine during the night or a small
overactive bladder.
If your child is bothered by his/her bedwetting, it
is a good time to start treatment. When treating
bedwetting, it is important that your child have
healthy daytime bladder habits. Your child should
pee every 2-3 hours during the day and have a
soft bowel movement at least once or twice every
day. Try to avoid any foods or drinks that may affect the bladder such as caffeine, soda pop, iced
tea, strong fruit juices, food dyes, heavily sugared
foods, chocolate, spicy foods and/or tomatoes.
Encourage your child to drink lots of water during
the day but limit his or her fluid intake after supper. Always ensure your child pees before bed.
Many studies show that bedwetting may be
caused by a disorder of sleep which does not allow the child to wake when his/her bladder feels
full. A bedwetting alarm can be used to teach
your child to wake up when their bladder is full.
When starting to use the bedwetting alarm, it is
important that you wake your child to void when
the alarm rings as most children do not wake to
the alarm. For more information on bedwetting
alarms check out www.bedwettingstore.com.
If your child continues to wet the bed after the age
of seven, you should consult a healthcare provider. There may be medications which can help, or
there may be other health conditions that could
be contributing to bedwetting, such as sleep apnea, constipation, urinary tract infections, food
sensitivities and/or medications. Your healthcare
provider can help manage these.
See a healthcare professional if your child’s bedwetting is new after many years of being dry over
night or if your child has daytime wetting episodes,
bowel accidents, back pain and/or leg weakness
with activity besides his/her bedwetting.
Betty Ann is a Pediatric Urology Nurse Practitioner at
the Stollery Children’s Hospital who sees many children
with day and nighttime wetting in her Pediatric Voiding
Dysfunction Clinic. Kathy Reid is a Nurse Practitioner at
Stollery Children’s Hospital.

BY MARY JO RAPINI
Summer break is here and that often means family trips. If you’re like many parents,
you’ve been busy with your job, your kids’ activities, your partner and your aging
parents. It’s easy to forget that you are raising teens, and taking everyone on a
family vacation may be more challenging than you expected.
Teens aren’t the always easiest to travel with.
They sometimes have an attitude over things that
may not have concerned them before; they might
insult under their breath; and sometimes they
melt into screaming, slamming doors and tears.
It can make living with them trying, but traveling
with them can push you over the edge.
Rather than give in to your own stress and anger,
it’s better to embrace an attitude of reconnecting
with your teen(s). This requires you to be an adult,
and not take what they say personally, but rather see the vulnerability inside. You want them to
be grateful for all the sacrifices you’ve made, and
you have a better chance of seeing their gratitude
if you make an adjustment within yourself.
Here are suggestions to help you get
closer to your teen on summer break,
or any time.
Calm yourself down first. Vacations can be
stressful and when you take your stress out on
your teen, you will get it back double fold.
Remember you’re the parent. Your child is not
your friend. Don’t get drawn into petty arguments
with them. There is no worse car trip than being
locked inside fighting with your teen.
Respect boundaries. Your teen needs privacy
and that need is present on vacations, too. Create
a space for them to be alone at times, and don’t
guilt them or shame them for needing that.
Talk less, lecture never, and listen always. Kids
will tell you so much if you don’t make them feel
interrogated.
Kids learn most by watching you, especially how
you treat their other parent, strangers and waiters. If you are rude, talk down or are mean, they
learn that it’s okay to treat others that way.
Before the trip have expectations listed and make
sure each child understands exactly what is expected on the trip. Teens are less anxious when
they know what to expect.
Always look for behaviours your kids do right,
and tell them how impressed you were. Teens
need to know they please you.
The whole family needs to have a set time to unplug on vacation. Decide that prior to the summer
break and enforce it with your kids and yourself.
The family that plays together stays together.
Lighten up, join your kids in ridiculous laughter and fun. Life without humour would be
unbearable.
If summer break is going to be spent at home
instead of away, these same suggestions apply. Use the time to reconnect with your teen.
Summer is an opportunity to take a break with
your child, getting to know who they are, and
reconnecting with them without the pressures
of school activities.

Given a camera that takes and
prints tiny pictures just before
leaving for the family farm in
Canada, a young girl records a
vacation that gets off to a slow
start, but winds up being a family reunion filled
with good memories.
The Big Bad Wolf Goes on Vacation
by Delphine Perret
Amelia Bedelia Road Trip!
by Herman Parish
The BIG BAD WOLF is back--and funnier (but not scarier) than ever! Doesn’t
a wolf deserve a vacation, too? Bernard, the clever, cookie-munching hero
of Delphine Perret’s award-winning book, certainly thinks so. So when he
learns that his pal Louis is vacationing by the sea with his grandpa, Bernard wants to go too. Soon they’re off on a wacky road trip that ends with
the perfect day on the beach.
Fun and fiascoes ensue when
young Amelia Bedelia and her parents take a road trip through their
state.
Escape to California
by Josh Greenhut
There’s no place on Earth a flat kid can’t go! The Lambchops are on a family vacation
to San Francisco, California. But when Stanley saves a girl from barreling down one
of San Francisco’s famously steep hills, he’s shocked to find that she’s actually been
looking for him. The girl, Lily, is trying to perform an amazing trick that no one has ever
done before--escaping from Alcatraz prison--and she needs Stanley’s help! Can the
famous flat boy lend a hand to pull off this tricky stunt?
The Stinky Cheese Vacation
by Geronimo Stilton
Each Geronimo Stilton book is fast-paced, with lively full-colour art and a unique format kids 7-10 will love. I, Geronimo Stilton, was finishing up work one evening when
I opened a letter from Uncle Stingysnout. He needed to see me immediately! I headed
straight to Penny Pincher Castle for what I thought would be a nice visit . . . but my uncle
put me straight to work. Moldy mozzarella, what a terrible vacation!

BY JULIE MCCAFFREY
Summertime is an opportunity for family bonding
and fun. If you don’t have
time to fly to a beach or
hike in the Rockies, you
and your family can still
make memories over the
summer this year. Consider designing your own
Staycation with your kids
this year by incorporating
some of the ideas listed
below:
Backyard camping trip
Go to a hotel
Pajama day
Now is the the perfect time for a backyard get-away. Set up a tent with sleeping bags. Fire up the
grill and make s’mores over a campfire. Tell ghost
stories and play games like flashlight tag with the
kids. Turn off the cell phones and treat it like a
real get-a-way.
You may not have time or budget to get away during the summer, but you could rent a hotel room
at a local hotel with an indoor pool. You get a
break from cooking for the weekend and the kids
get to enjoy the amenities at the hotel. Many hotels offer “staycation” rates to make the adventure
even more affordable.
Spend one entire day at home. Make nachos, play
old-fashioned board games or watch sports. Do
whatever you enjoy, but never have time to do because of busy school schedules.
Video game olympics
Rainy days can force families to stay in during
the summer. Organize a Video Olympics. Wii offers lots of sports like bowling, tennis, baseball
and boxing. Keep them short so everyone has a
turn. You can even set up tournaments and play
for prizes to make it more competitive. You can
play in teams and get t-shirts in team colours to
make it feel more official. Setting up a food bar
with sports drinks, protein bars and fresh fruits
and veggies will give it an authentic touch.
Be a tourist in your own city
How many people never get around to seeing the
sites in their own town? Take advantage of summer break and tour your local town or surrounding
area. Visit the zoo or museum. If you live in a rural
area perhaps you could visit a local farm. If you’re
a history buff, take a walking architectural tour of
buildings in your town and discuss the influences
of the time period in which they were built.
Sundae and movie day
If your kids love movies, pick out some classic
movies to binge on for a day. Create an ice cream
sundae bar with lots of ice cream flavours and
toppings. Make some popcorn and have soda
on hand. Choose a theme like cowboy westerns,
comedies or aliens.
Fly kites
Summer can bring with it blustery days. Take a
morning, pack a picnic and go to the park to fly
kites. It’s an activity both parents and kids enjoy.
Take in the fresh air and get some exercise while
playing with the kids.
Try something new
Make this time off extraordinary by putting together a schedule for each day outlining what you
plan to do. Make sure you have enough activities
planned to cover the entire time off school. Get
the kids involved to make sure you have activities
they will enjoy. Have a mix of time at home and
time out of the house for good balance. Make this
summer vacation an unforgettable one for your
kids by planning early and getting organized.

SUBMITTED BY MABEL’S LABELS
Understanding finances can be tough enough for adults. So how do you make it
simple enough for your kids to make cents (ha!) of it? When they’re young, it’s
important to approach complicated financial concepts with a bit of creativity.
Here are a few tips:
1. Let your kids “earn” money
If you don’t pay your kids to do chores, (after all,
nobody is paying you to make dinner – why pay
them to clear the table?) you can still find ways
to teach them about earning an income. Try using a checkmark system where each child has
a box on a whiteboard, and they earn and lose
checkmarks based on behaviour. At the end of
the week, a certain number of checkmarks can
get cashed in for a certain amount of money. And
while they may not be rewarded for doing basic family chores, your kids can be rewarded for
things like being helpful, being a good listener,
and showing initiative.
2. Help them understand
how lucky they are
Sponsoring a child through organizations like
World Vision is a good way to teach children
about the difference between “wants” and
“needs”. Sponsor a child and let your children
correspond with them. Tell your children that
sometimes their requests for new toys aren’t in
the budget because you’re sending money to
your foster child. When they realize another
child needs food and running water, it becomes
an easy, teachable thing to understand.
3. Make donating a family affair
4. Help your kids learn to save
Try including your children in the decision-making process when you plan to donate to aid during an international crisis. Show them that by
giving up something small, they can make a big
impact. You can choose to stop going for hot
chocolate after hockey for a month, for example. If everyone makes a small sacrifice, you can
make a family donation together.
Whether you use a traditional piggy bank or the
popular Moonjar — an adapted coin bank separated into three sections: “spend,” “share” and
“save” — it’s important to teach the value of saving money. If they want something but it costs a
lot of money, it’s good to have them save for six
weeks rather than just having Mommy buy it. It
then has a lot more value when they finally do
buy it. It’s also a good idea to start them early
with their first bank account, and maybe even
have them contribute a small amount to saving
for their future education.
