SYNOPSIS
Far in the ancient Middle East there lived a sultan called Shahryar. He had his
first wife killed after she had betrayed him and his country. As Shahryar couldn’t
stand being alone, every day he married a different maiden who, on the following
day, was killed. Many pretty girls ran away from his town. Sherezade, the vizier’s
daughter, accepted to marry the sultan. Her father was very worried, fearing his
daughter would die soon after she got married. But Sherezade was smart and had
a plan. Did Ali Baba and the forty thieves help her? Did the fisherman, his wife and
the genie? Would you?

Sherezade! Cover your face! Nobody should see your beauty or else they will
tell the sultan!
SHEREZADE: I don’t care. I’ll marry him. I’ve got a plan.
ALBAR: What plan?
SHEREZADE: Does the sultan like stories?
ALBAR: Oh, yes! When he was a child…
SHEREZADE: Father, stop. Does he like stories now?
ALBAR: I don’t know.
SHEREZADE: Well, if he liked stories when he was a child he should like them

GENIE: I’ll show you my power, silly fisherman. (The genie makes big efforts but he manages
to get into the lamp again. The fisherman takes the lid and closes it)
FISHERMAN: So you were powerful after all but… not very smart.
GENIE: Let me out! Let me out!
FISHERMAN: No way. You were bad with me, pretty bad.
GENIE: I promise I’ll make you rich. You may ask for three wishes. They are granted.
FISHERMAN: I don’t believe you. I’ll throw you into the sea again.
GENIE: No, please, no. I’ll be good and kind. I’ll be… I’ll be your humble servant. Let me
out, please! Save me! (the fisherman is doubtful and finally he decides rub the lamp) (The
genie is apparently angry at first. The fisherman is scared and kneels down praying to Allah
to protect him. The genie thinks that the fisherman is worshipping him. He approaches the
fisherman and helps him to stand up)
Master, please, stand up. You don’t have to kneel down to ask for your three wishes.
(The fisherman is pleased to hear this). Tell me your three wishes.
FISHERMAN: Well… it’s difficult… I wish…
SHAHRYAR: (enthusiastically) Food, money and a new wife! (the fisherman reacts as he
doesn’t know where this voice comes from. Sherezade calms him down)
GENIE: Did I hear well? A new wife?
FISHERMAN: No! I love my wife. Don’t pay attention to that voice. It must have come
from a mad old master of yours. (The sultan reacts) These are my wishes and in this order:
first…to have a happy marriage…
GENIE: (sighs) Beautiful! Granted!
FISHERMAN: Second wish: food
GENIE: Yummy, yummy! And logical. Granted!
FISHERMAN: Third wish: money…
GENIE: Granted.
FISHERMAN: No, wait! I haven’t finished yet. Money… but not too much money. Just to
cover my family’s needs… an Iphone 6, a PS3, an Ipad… . If you make me rich, extremely
rich, I may loose my happiness.
GENIE: Granted with pleasure! Do you know something? You are really smart. This last
wish is amazing! (He starts laughing) You are right. Too much money means too many
worries! Your three wishes are granted, master!

SHEREZADE: Dear father, that is a good wish but my happiness will finish tomorrow
morning. (Shahryar feels uncomfortable and upset) Now let’s enjoy this night. Music for
dancing, please.
ALBAR: It’s time to leave. Sire, may I see my daughter tomorrow morning before… before…
(he starts crying)… well, you know before what…
SHAHRYAR: Yes, you may.
SHEREZADE: Don’t cry my good father. I’m happy to be the sultan’s wife.
HARUN: Pity it’s only for one night.
SHAHRYAR: Harun, shut up! (Albar embraces his daughter and leaves. She sits next to the
sultan. Albar changes into the old fisherman)
SHEREZADE: My dear husband, do you like stories?
HARUN: I love stories, I love Frozen! Let it go! Let it…
SHAHRYAR: Harun!
HARUN: Sorry, sire.
SHAHRYAR: Sherezade, I like stories but I think this is not the moment to tell stories.
SHEREZADE: Any moment can be the moment to tell stories.
MARAD: Please, sire, let my mistress tell us all a story. She’s great doing so.
SHAHRYAR: All right. But be brief.
SHEREZADE: Make yourself comfortable dear husband. (She helps him with the cushions.
He feels guilty whenever he looks at her. Harun and Marad stay together on one side)
SHAHRYAR: Harun!
HARUN: Yes sire?
SHAHRYAR: Go and tell the other soldiers and servants not to enter this room. I don’t want
any interruptions during this storytelling, understood?

ACTIVITY 25:
Read the following text and spot differences with the play you have seen.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PLAY…
This play is based on a traditional collection of stories. The collection of stories known as The
One Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights began as folk tales from the oral traditions
of Egypt, Syria, Iraq, India, Persia and Mesopotamia. These stories were first written down as
collections by unknown authors around the 8th Century and are a reflection of the diversity
of the medieval Islamic world - a huge area spanning the Middle East and Asia which was
connected through trade and religion.
The first European translation of the tales appeared in 1706 when Antoine Galland translated
the stories into French. Translations into English based on Galland’s work appeared soon after.
Three stories which have become associated with The One Thousand and One Nights in the
West - Sinbad the Sailor, Aladdin and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves – were added by Galland.
These stories, although probably genuine Middle Eastern folk tales, are not found in any Arabic
versions of the text.
The stories that form The One Thousand and One Nights are held within a narrative frame set
in the court of King Shahrayer. King Shahrayer, betrayed and humiliated by his unfaithful wife,
vows, in a terrible revenge on all women, to marry a different woman each night - and each
morning after their wedding have her executed before he can be betrayed again. This time, the
bride he has chosen is Dinarzad - the youngest daughter of his Vizier - but Shahrazad, her older
sister, asks to take her place. Shahrazad is confident in her storytelling powers and believes
she can keep the King so entranced by her stories that he will keep her alive in order to hear
what happens next - the ultimate cliffhanger. What follows is the unfolding of story, within story,
within story over 1001 nights as the power of Shahrazad’s storytelling not only keeps her alive
and her sister safe, but transforms King Shahrayer himself.
Are these TRUE or FALSE?
1. There are two possible names for this collection of stories.
2. The stories were all written by the same author.
3. The main theme in these stories is diversity in the Islamic World.
4. The stories were originally written in French.
5. Some very well-known stories were introduced by Galland.
6. King Shahrayer was betrayed and humiliated by his wife.
7. The last wife he chose was replaced by her sister.
8. Shahrazad could save her younger sister.

PLAY:
A HEART LIKE A STONE
SHEREZADE:
What does it take to soften
A heart that’s like a stone
What does it take to get through
This unbreakable wall?
It’s a challenge I must face
I just need the strength
So in this bright Arabian night
I need the magic of the stars
To light my way and give me
Strength to change my fate
I need the wisdom of the gods Please send me guidance from above
And show me how I can get through
A heart that’s like a stone
Good stars tell me how a girl Can turn this bad dream
Into music of the soul to play
The lovely notes of hope
So in this bright Arabian night
I need the magic of the stars
To show me how I can get through
A heart that´s like a stone
