going to church!
At 6:30 pm on Sunday, April 27th, the first
tornado siren alert was sounded in Little Rock
and at 7:42 p.m., I received an ERT (Early
Response Team) standby email alerting us that
we would receive notice of deployment the
next day! I am an UMCOR (United Methodist
Committee on Relief) ERT trained volunteer
and indicated I would not be able to respond
until the second week since Rev. Betsy was
out of town and I was back-up for emergency
pastoral care at Trinity UMC.
Over the
weekend, I received my assignment of Vilonia
UMC and was asked to bring a couple of church
members with me for general duties. By that
time, Phase I (Rescue) had ended and Phase II
(Relief), which is expected to last 5-6 weeks, was
in operation.
So, early Monday morning, Olen Taylor and
I headed to Vilonia. Even before we exited the
freeway, we could already see some of the
damage of the tornado. We drove for a few
miles and then, we were suddenly in another
world — a world where the earth was flat
and piles of former homes were now reduced
to rubble lying beside the road waiting for the
dumpsters. We spotted the Cross and Flame
sign and pulled into the Vilonia UMC parking lot
which was stacked with pallets of bottled water.
Byron Mann (Volunteers in Mission) was talking
on the phone to the Call Center. A tent set up
on the lawn provided shade for tables covered
in various packaged snack foods while coolers
on the ground kept beverages icy cold. A church
member named Jean introduced herself as the
“food lady” and generously offered us hospitality
in the form of a cookie or muffin. The minister,
Rev Nathan Kilbourne, was being interviewed
by a TV station and would be with us shortly,
she said. I stepped around the corner of the
tarped building and there it was, a big mangled,
twisted heap of metal at the front of what used
to be the new worship center of Vilonia UMC
with exposed beams where the roof once sat.
It looked like a huge, gaping wound. My heart
ached — it was surreal. I just couldn’t take it all in.
Soon Byron Mann had given us the assignment
of manning the volunteer desk and one of the

Norman from Trinity! Throughout the day,
these were my observations:
• Rev. Nathan Kilbourn, who was so calm,
referred to his back-pack as his portable office.
• People came and went during the day,
some came to help, some needed help.
• Something greater than tornado tubs, gas
cards and food was given to people that day.
• I asked Byron Mann what had been his
prayer. He said “Help me. Help me, God,
to get these people what they need.”
• I asked Rev. Kilbourne what he told
his people. He said they worshiped
Sunday at the Baptist Church and he
used the lectionary from Luke about
the walk to Emmaus. He told them that
“Were not our hearts burning within
us...” was Jesus speaking to their hearts
and working within them. It was Senior
Day and he told the seniors they were
starting a new chapter in their lives and
their church was starting a new chapter
in its life too. He told them to listen to
the burning within their hearts.
• I spoke with a young man who was cutting
a large uprooted tree into smaller pieces
so it would be easier to be removed
from the church property. He said the
tree was a Sycamore and was over 100
years old. He told me he’d always loved

Trinity history), Methodist Beliefs and John
Wesley’s message. This 4 week class is for
new and long time members. The class will

Thanks to everyone who gives their
time and skills to Trinity and our community.

down his face as we spoke.
As we left Vilonia for the day, I was
humbled and touched by the efforts of
the United Methodist Church and how
connectional we are. One of several UMC
pastors who stopped by that day had
brought dozens of loaves of fresh bread
from a bakery and Rev. Kilbourne and Jean,
the “food lady,” insisted we take a loaf with
us — Communion!
Just as I got back into Little Rock, I
realized it was time for my Centering
Prayer group. How transforming it was to
sit in silence, listening to God, after I had
already seen Christ so many times that day!

Art Exhibit
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Little Rock
is hosting the international exhibit “Icons in
Transformation” by the Russian-born and
acclaimed contemporary artist Ludmila
Pawlowska.
“Icons in Transformation” is a stunning
90-piece exhibit that presents the mystery
and spiritual power of the icon re-imagined by
the artist.The exhibition is open to the public
from May 3-August 17. Admission is free.

of Little Rock School District Volunteers in
Public School awards. Mayne Parker was
awarded a Tutor Award for his work in Ms.
Beals’s kindergarten class at Brady; Jennifer
Roberts won a Family Volunteer Award for
her work in the office at Central High; Jack
Singleton won a Family Volunteer Award for
his time at Carver Elementary where his
grandchild attends; an a Brady Bulldog Buddy
(and friend of Trinity), John MacLeod, was
recognized as an outstanding Community
Volunteer. Our appreciation goes out to
these wonderful volunteers who are helping
the children of our community.

Recently Trinity was asked to assist
students from Hall High School who had
been accepted as delegates to Boys and
Girls State. A donation of $600 was given
to the school from individuals and the
Miracle Team. Hall’s Head Counselor, Ms.
Sarah Merayo, sends thanks from these
outstanding students.

This year Lenten offerings, Imagine
No Malaria and Arkansas Dream Center,
received $6,936.90.

work day a success
The April 19 Faithworks event at Brady
Elementary was a success. Over 20 church,
school, and community volunteers built raised
vegetable beds for the children to plant this
spring. Also, a lot of work was done to improve
the landscaping in the front of the school.The
staff, parents, and children at Brady appreciate
Trinity’s support and hard work.

Prayer Candle Tables
May 4 marked the first date of the new
Prayer Candle Tables on both sides of the
sanctuary. The white draped tables were
covered with various candles and everyone
who had a special prayer need was invited
to light a candle and say a silent prayer
either before worship or before returning
to their seats during Communion.
The Prayer Candle Tables will remain in
the sanctuary and will change during the
liturgical seasons.

have spent their entire lives attending and
giving to Trinity. They will be missed.

John Bell
Although he is only in ninth grade, John was
grouped with upper classmen at the Central
High Science Fair and won the Environmental
Science Division. At the Central Arkansas
Regional Science Fair, he won the same division
and also received awards by the Arkansas
Fisheries Association, the United States Navy
and the Stockholm Water Society. John also
won a second place award for his research
paper from the Junior Academy of Science at
the regional fair. At the State Science Fair, he
won his division and was selected as the fourth
place overall student. As such, he is being sent
as a finalist to the International Science and
Engineering Fair in Los Angeles. There will be
students from all over the United States and
from over 50 countries competing in Los
Angeles. We are thrilled and so proud of John
for his hard work.

June 21-28, 2014
Mark your calendars, June 21-28 will be
our annual summer mission trip to Mobile, AL
to work with Ransom Cafe Ministries feeding
the poor, homeless, and those in need of
ministry. The Armbrusters have told me they
are excited for our return and are working
on some new plans. More details will follow

NOW is a great time to give the choir a
try. Just from hearing the wonderful sounds
of our congregations on Sunday mornings, I
know that there are lots of folks out there
who could really help us in the choir. Don’t
read music? Don’t worry, we’ll seat you next
to someone you can follow. You used to
sing, but you think you’re “rusty?” After only
a couple of rehearsals you’ll feel like you’re
back in the swing of things. Just give David a
call, 666-2813, to talk about it. Being at choir
practice on Wednesdays at 6:30 is a truly fun

On May 22 - May 31, Trinity’s Minister of
Music, David Glaze, will lead the River City
Men’s Chorus as American ambassadors on a
concert tour which will include performances
in Berlin, Prague and Vienna. One highlight
of the trip will include a performance of the
men’s chorus with the University of Vienna
Alumni Singers, including the beloved hymn
Joyful, Joyful,We Adore Thee, which is arranged by
well-known composer Mark Hayes.

Over 40 Easter outfits were collected for
Trinity children’s outreach during the Lenten/
Easter season. The outfits were taken to
Brady and distributed by the school counselor,
Yolanda Shelton. In a thank you note from Ms.
Shelton, all clothing items found a new home
and one kindergarten girl ignored the daily
uniform policy and proudly wore her new
Easter dress to school on Friday. Thanks to all
TriniKid parents who donated to this outreach
and to Georgiana Soderberg for arranging the
connection of the donation with Ms. Shelton.

storm. We truly witnessed the best United Methodists can be in the face of destruction and tragedy. Thank you

Rebuilding will take months and there will be a need for housing volunteer teams. If your church is interested in

coordinator will contact you.
Call Center Closing:
The conference’s disaster response call center has closed down as of 2 pm Monday, May 5. With the help of
numerous volunteers, calls for assistance and resources have been fielded and logged and response teams assigned
to projects across the central Arkansas area for the next week, and in some cases, for long-term recovery efforts.
Recovery Projects:
Email [email protected] or call 870-703-8359 if you need to speak to someone about a project in the field that
needs attention.
Donations:
The collection centers located at FUMC Maumelle, Grace UMC Conway, and Christ UMC Cabot have closed
and are no longer accepting donations. If you have supplies to deliver, first check with your district office to see if
