Hey, skiers! Have you been enjoying the nice weather? It
has warmed up. The drought has broken, and things are
green again. Summer’s sultry days are coming, but for
now it is very pleasant.

This time of year my favorite watering spot is the River’s
Edge, where I keep running into other TSC members —
Ron and Terri Lewis, Gary and Alma Buscombe, Dennis
Holt and Don Wickersham so far this season. Dennis
and Don cruise up on their big Harleys and are polite
enough not to tease me about my scooter. Come down
some Sunday afternoon and enjoy the live music.
The Spring Hoe-down in May was a lot of fun. Thanks to
last year’s Social Chair, Jim Constantine, for his hard work in organizing and selling the
event.
I’m still relatively new to Tulsa and nearly every event gives me a chance to visit someplace
new — and this was no exception. The Perryman Ranch, scene of this party, was very
interesting. I particularly liked the old house with all the antiques inside. I just had watch
out for the missing areas of floor and the shoestring-eating goats who guarded the
place. It all made for a great evening.

By the time you read this, the golf tournament will have taken place. Sales were a little
slow at first, but the last I heard almost all the teams had been filled. I know everyone had
a good time!
The summer bowling league has started. Bowlers will be playing Wednesday evenings
over at the Sheridan Lanes. The league has begun, but I’m sure they can use the
occasional substitute. Call Kelley Phillips at 447-0494 for information.
FSA’s trip to Costa Rica is coming up on July 1. By now reservations are closed, but it
should be a great trip.
Don’t miss this month’s Skiers’ Night Out. This will be JoAnn Huber’s annual pool party.
The event is a little early this year, but the weather should be plenty warm enough. Look
for details elsewhere in this issue.
The annual Lake Party is coming in August. Watch for more information.
Summer Trip Chair George Moudry has planned a wilderness trip to Rocky Mountain
National Park trip with backpacking and other

17 at the Elks’ Lodge. Mark your calendar now —

winter trip schedule — watch for details in coming
issues! We plan to release trip information (and
have the Trip Captains start marketing their trips)
as we finalize arrangements, rather than waiting
until the last minute.
Sunni and Homer Wagner will be chairing a
Caribbean Cruise in November. See the notice in
this issue for details.
The bottom line … Tulsa Ski Club has a lot going

Greetings, Members and Guests! In my opening report as your
new Membership Chair, I would like to thank my predecessor
Lynette Davis for serving as Chair this past year and for the
assistance as I take over her duties. Special thanks also to Jim
LeMaster for developing the membership data base and for his
assistance as well.

More exciting news from our May Board
Meeting. Our Summer Colorado trip is
now scheduled to Rocky Mountain
National Park for Labor Day weekend. We also have four winter
ski trips already approved by the executive committee. Jim
Constantine and John Hill have partnered together for an
exciting list of trips. The Season Opener, ASPEN, 12/13 to
12/18, four days. We are staying in Aspen the week before
Christmas. What a start to the season! The second approved
trip is to Silverthorne over the Christmas Holiday 12/26 thru
12/31 with Skiing focused on KEYSTONE. The third trip
approved is TELLURIDE ski in and ski out over MLK Weekend
1/11 to 1/16. And the fourth is the FSA Trip to HEAVENLY,
California, Lake Tahoe, USA from 1/30 to 2/4.
Renewals are rolling in at a good rate. Let this edition of the Lift
Line serve as a reminder to those who have not renewed yet to
do so as soon as possible. We want to keep all of you… even
those whom we don’t see very often, so send in your renewal
today!
Any and all assistance from current members with guests and
the recruitment of new members is greatly appreciated. This is
truly the backbone of the Tulsa Ski Club and warm welcomes
along with innovative ideas on recruitment go a long way in this
regard.
Can any ski club in America do better than that? WOW!!!! I
think not. Trip Captains are being selected as we speak. If
you are one that really wants one of these trips, get in touch
with Jim TODAY! The rest of the ski trip calendar is amazing,
but still a little in flux. Our other fly out trip is looking to be
Andorra between France and Spain with trips to Barcelona
and maybe an island close by. Regina Mullings is working
on this one. Way to go, Regina. The rest of the schedule
includes Breckenridge, Taos, Copper, Crested Butte,
Steamboat and possibly another surprise in the making...
Way to go, guys and girls. In 95 degree heat, all I can think of
is cool snow.

Other Board news of importance was suggested by Gene
Elsberry to update our accounting computer software which
was approved. We want to get a head start on this such that
winter trips can start to be paid in the summer months.
Discussion to break the trip cost into four payments was
suggested and is being developed. I strongly suggest that we
get the first payment as a deposit on all winter trips the sooner
the better. This way we can determine if we need to add
capacity to these trips. It is usually too late to add capacity
after our Sign-up Picnic in September. So we will be hitting
the winter trips hard in our next Lift Line with Captains and
prices. PLANNING!!!!

We are also looking at parking for some of our trips at the
Kincaid Bus terminal instead of out at the Tulsa Airport.
Oklahoma City club has parked at Kincaid in KOCH for a
long time without any trouble. The Tulsa Kincaid facility looks
to be secure, and they have offered this to us as part of the
negotiation on trip pricing. This could save you $15 to $20 for
parking of your car.
Jim Constantine gave a report on the Spring Dance that
showed us close to breaking even on this event. Jim has
been very instrumental in making sure our social events come
close to paying for themselves. He has done a fine job of
doing this while having a lot of fun.
I skied A-Basin last weekend, the 13th of May and that will
probably be it for me. It has truly been a great season. It
started for me at Thanksgiving at A-Basin and Keystone. Vail
was next, then Keystone over the Holidays. Then Vail, Copper,
Keystone, Taos, Breckenridge, Vail and A-Basin to finish it
off at 29 days. So until the snow flies again, I am looking
forward to our Summer Trips. Come Join in the Fun!!

President’s Day 2006 at
Breckenridge, Colorado
Chuck and Heidi Highfill, along
with daughter Stella, spent their
time skiing with friends John and
Valerie Keown and their daughter,
Hayley. At one point Chuck voiced
a complaint that his legs were
fatigued. Valerie, who had just
recovered from a major illness,
told Chuck to “suck it up; if I can
do this, you can.” Chuck later
suggested “ Never ski with Valerie
“Ride of the Valkyries,” she claims
middle age but skis like a
teenager.”

“Family, Friends, and Fun” was the theme for the trip — two buses
filled to capacity (80 people) with 8 other members providing
their own transportation. Ski members showed their roll-withthe-punches attitude as soon as the trip started. A different kind
of bus showed up for one of the Kincaid buses. This one had a
different kind of bed arrangement than previous participants were
accustomed to. The trip captains made considerations and
decided how the buses would be assigned, since we had many
first-timers on the trip. The cooperation between members, new
and seasoned, young and old, family and friends, made the entire
trip a pleasure.
For the second time, Jason and
Marla Knepper came with Cole
and Alex, this time sharing a condo with Marla’s sister Cara and
her husband Tyson Hickle, and Cara’s friend, Valarie Martin,
another “first timer.” Cole and Alex were spotted very easily on
the mountain with their wild and colorful helmet covers. Congrats
go to the Hickles as they are expecting a child in June. This was
Tyson’s first time on the boards but Cara did not ski. She showed
a can-do attitude making the entire bus trip with the altitude
adjustment and constantly having a smile on her face.
The most special event on this Breckenridge trip occurred the
first day of skiing on Four O’Clock Run at 11:15 in the morning. As
the mountain photographer was taking a photo of Jennifer
Selstad and Scott Grimes, Scott proposed marriage. Way to go,
Scott, what a romantic! By the way, she said, “Yes.” We wish you
both our heartiest congratulations.
There were 27 new TSC members on this trip this year, all part of
a group of 31 friends and friends of friends. The Greene family
was part of this group, and thanks to Allison for being so
instrumental in bringing this group together.
This too was the second year that Mark and Gayle Schell joined
this trip, along with daughters Gracie and Abby. This year they
brought along brother and sister-in-law Joe Hanlon-Schell and
Kimberly Hanlon-Schell. Since Abby is quite young, Mark thought
a tether would be a good idea to help control her speed. On their
first run of the trip Abby turned left at the same time that Mark
turned right and fell. Abby came to an abrupt flying stop and
complained “Hey daddy, I don’t need this thing.” Then daughter
Gracie tried her first race experience on the NASTAR course —
way to go Gracie!! Gayle only wishes for one thing to make the
trip to Breckenridge better … that is to learn where the cut-off is to
our condo on Four O’Clock Run. She keeps skiing all the way to
the bottom of the trail and has to take the bus up the hill to
Wedgwood.
John and Allison Greene made this a very special holiday for
their daughter Annie. They brought along Annie’s friends Hayley
and Emily Mulford, and Maria Porto, a foreign exchange student
from Brazil. This was the first time Maria had seen snow and
mountains, but after a one-day lesson, she was keeping up with
her three friends.
Among the first-timers were the Gould family – Gary and Sharon
and their kids, Allie, Brooke and Andrew. This group also
included friends Dara Krapff and Carrie James, Carrie being
responsible for Chuck Highfill’s cartwheel down the aisle of the
bus and noted for losing her sunglasses on her head. Children
and friends included teenagers Stella Highfill, Haley Keown,
Ashley Littlefield and Hannah James, who spent much of the
trip laughing at each other. Stella was champion of the “Bite the
Bag” contest.
Tip and Robin Burch again joined the trip with their four boys,
Braden and the triplets, Trevor, Grayson, and Connor. We so
enjoy their participation. They can always be counted on to
understand problems and roll with the punches – we need more
like them. Friends Doug Plunk and son Steve shared the Burch
condo again.
Other new TSC members were Dave and Shaunda Henry with
young sons Jack and Clay. This family is very familiar with the
sport having lived in Denver for many years. Jack’s special note
of this trip is that he “hit a tree”. By the way, Jack is an 11-year-old
outstanding young artist that draws perfect three dimension
Fred and Liz Heganbart enjoyed skiing with their daughters, Molly,
Maggie, and Megan, and brought Molly’s friend Erin Hillis to join
in the fun. Their preferred trails are the blues on Peak 7.
The Terry Gordon family, Mary Ellen, Madalyn, and Kenny traveled
along with Terry’s brother Dusty Gordon’s family, Amy and Mickey.
They brought along Maddy’s friend, Taylor McAllister. The TSC
is always pleased to see the Gordons, Gordons, Nunnelleys,
and Olbrichs use this trip as their annual reunion. Terry and
Mary Ellen Gordon, Dusty and Amy Gordon, Blake and Teri
Nunnelley, and Eric and Kim Olbrich have been part of this trip
for the past four years. They each take turns with dinner, serving
such specialties as jambalaya and green
chili.
The mountain parties were outstanding
this year. Because we had so many kids,
the parties were divided into three groups:
pre-teens, teens, and adults. Terry and
Mary Ellen Gordon, along with Dusty and
Amy Gordon, hosted the adult party at their
condo. They laid out an enjoyable spread
of hot wings, sausage, fruit sections,
cheese trays, chips and dips, along with

selections of beer, wine and margaritas. The adult party lasted
from 6:00 until 7:30, at which time many formed groups and went
out to dinner.
A special thanks goes to John and Gail Wagner and daughter
Jasmine for hosting a teen party. There were 18 teenagers in our
group, and the Wagners thought the teens would prefer to have
their own party rather than being stuck with either the adults or
the pre-teens. This worked out well. They drank soda, ate popcorn
and pizza, and played “Bite the Bag.” By 7 p.m. the teens thought
they had enough of that fun, so they came to the adult party and
received permission to go into town. Many ended at the Oxygen
Bar.
Bill and Ruth Obermark hosted the pre-teen party at their condo.
This is also called “Parents Night Out.” Bill and Ruth feed the
kids hot dogs, pizza rolls, carrot sticks and Kool-Aid, then play
games until the parents return from an evening at a local
restaurant. Every year the games differ. This year they included
ping pong ball relay races, Pictionary, and Spoons, along with the
ever popular “Mummy Wrap.” As the evening gets late, a movie is
started and pillows and blankets are brought out.
A special “tip of the hat and thank you” must go to Harry Simpson.
Harry and Elaine Simpson were two of the drive-ups on this trip.
When Ashley Weber contracted the flu and became dehydrated,
Harry took Ashley and sister Dana to the emergency room for
treatment. He later returned at 2 a.m. to bring them back to the
condo. John and Ann Darnaby were also a couple who drove up
and chose to stay with the ski club.

Despite this trip being promoted as a family trip, we always have
a group of “singles” who ski and dine together. Dennis Martin
and Gary Buscombe enjoyed the powder and were joined by
Dennis’ son, Chad. Another father and son team was Frank and
Andy Foreman. The Foremans are repeat Breckenridge trip skiers
and enjoy the convenience of the club trip. They were joined
periodically by Josh Watts, Richard Garside, David Oshinski,
Tom Neal, Stacy Huckaby, and Dana and Ashley Weber. Joel
Eads brought his wife, Alessandra Fallini for her first ski trip to
share his love of skiing. Alessandra says she’s glad she lived to
be able to tell how Joel took her up the mountain after only one
day of lessons.

On the way home, we all switched buses so that the other half
could experience the new bus configuration. We had some mixed
reports of which was the preferred bus, but most liked our old
standbys for the ability to sit across from each other at a table.
The beds on the newer bus were wavy and funky, but we managed
to sleep on the way back and arrived in Tulsa in time for work and
school. Many of our first-timers said they were looking forward to
seeing next year’s TSC trip schedule. We hope to have many of
them join us again next year for Breckenridge 2007 over
Presidents’ Day Weekend.

Spring Golf Tournament

We gathered again for another TSC Spring Golf Tournament at
Whitehawk on Sunday, May 21st. We had a total of eight teams.
We had all the elements of a good day of golf: good weather, lots
of enthusiasm and some cool drinks on the course!
Team #1, Trey Sophy, Justin Sanwick, Jason and Shelly Farley,
was off at 11:00 and the competition was on. Each team went in
7 minutes increments, until the last team hit their drives at noon.
Team #2, Jim Sanwick, Jack Hannah, Bruce Dawson and Lee
Benest were hard-charging and making their share of noise.
Team #3, Paulo Koch, Bob Pearson, Gene and Evan Elsberry
got the most important element in their cart first
– the cooler! Team #4, Chris Gavin, Mike
Beudden and Matt Moss were down to three
because of a no-show. But, that did not deter
their enthusiasm.
Thanks to Phil Gelwick for taking pictures; thanks to
Raymond Kelly and Greg Valdez for being our
“starters”. A huge thank you to Jim Sanwick for being
the Tournament Director once again – for contacting
the course, putting our format together and telling
me what I needed to do next.
Mark and Eric Sommer, Frank’s kids, along with
Ron Grandstaff and Steve Cox made up team
#5. Team #6, Don Wickersham, John Wilson,
Susie Moore and Wendel Hillhouse were looking
pretty good from the get go. Team #7 comprised
of Mark Manahan, Phil Gelwick and Shari and
Tom Ogburn were right in front of us. It was good to see the
Ogburn’s once again. We are beginning to count on them to trek
to Tulsa for this event. And finally Team #8, the Blue Team,
consisted of Raymond
Kelly, Greg Valdez, Rebecca
Davis
and
Barbara
Constantine. We named
ourselves the Blue Team
when all showed up with
baby blue shirts except for
Greg Valdez. But he promptly
went to the pro shop and got
one to match!

a trip; (2) what you will do as a Trip Captain to make your trip
better than others; (3) how you would plan to market your trip; (4)
what specific skills you have to offer; and (5) suggestions to
improve all TSC trips.
