His enormous wealth means he can influence politicians and governments as well as the world of business. His money comes from the Microsoft Corporation, the company he started in 1975 with an old school friend, Paul Allen. Bill Gates’ story started in 1955. He was born in Seattle, where he grew up with his parents and two sisters. His father was a lawyer and his mother a teacher. When he was thirteen, he started to become interested in computers and began developing computer software. In 1972 he made his first big sale, of $4200, when he sold timetable software to his school. Bill Gates went to Harvard University and while he was there he started Microsoft. It was obvious that the new business was going to be a great success so, in 1976, he dropped out after doing three years of a four-year course. Microsoft grew into an enormous international company that employs 54,000 people all over the world. Gates met his wife, Melinda, in 1987 when she was working for Microsoft. They got married in 1994 and now have two children: Jennifer, born in 1996 and Roy, born in 1999. In 2000, when his personal fortune was more than $100 billion Bill Gates stepped down as chief executive of Microsoft to return to his first love, the development of software. In addition to his work at Microsoft, he is involved in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This charity gives money to health and education projects all over the world. For example, the foundation donated $750 million to pay for life-saving vaccinations to children in the developing world. Nearer home, the foundation gives money to bring computers, Internet access and Training to public libraries in poor areas in the United States and Canada. He and his wife have put more than $17 billion into their foundation. Gates’ books, The Road Ahead and Business & the Speed of Thought both hit the best-seller lists as people tried to learn the secret of his success. A. Choose the best title below. 1. See what’s on at the cinema this week – or get a classic out on video. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (US,152 minutes) Am I the only person in the world who doesn’t like Harry Potter? It took me a month to finish the book and the film is 152 minutes long, which was but a bit too much for my kids. This adventure film has lots of fantastic special effects but I just wanted to go home. It’s true that Daniel Radcliffe me makes a good Harry and he is well supported by the other actors both young and old. The second Harry Potter is now being made. I am sure it will be as successful as the first one. I won’t go to see it through and I’ll make sure that the kids go to see it with their father and not with me. Amélié ( France, 120 minutes ) It is rare that a foreign-language film is popular in Britain but Amelie was on at UK cinemas for months. Amelie is a woman acted by French actress Audrey Tautou. She lives in Paris and wants to help her friends find the love they need in their lives. This film, which was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, is great. I will certainly go and see it again. The Others ( US, 100 minutes ) Nicole Kidman stars in this frightening film set in the Channel Islands in 1945 (though it was actually filmed in Spain by a Spanish director). In the film, three strange workers arrive at the house where Nicole Kidman lives. Nicole Kidman plays Grace, the owner of the house and mother of two children. Strange things start to happen to Grace and to her children. Are the three workers doing these strange things? Go and see the film to find out! All my friends enjoyed this film, though I didn’t find it very interesting – I certainly didn’t have any problems sleeping after it. Cinema Paradiso ( Italy, 123 minutes ) I didn’t really want to watch Cinema Paradiso. I didn’t think it would be interesting. How wrong I was! Cinema Paradiso is a wonderful historical film! It is the story of Salvatore, played by three different actors at different stages of his life, and his love for the cinema. when he is a young boy his interest in the cinema is encouraged by Alfredo, brilliantly played by Philippe Noiret. I don’t want to say too much about the story but please go and see this wonderful film, or get it out on video tonight – and don’t forget your tissues! A. Louis Pasteur; A Modern-Day scientist. In the summer of 1885, nine-year old Joseph Meister was a very ill little boy. He had been attacked by a sick dog that had rabies, a deadly disease. His doctor tried to help him, but there was no cure for rabies at that time. The doctor told Joseph's parents that perhaps there was one man who could save Joseph's life. His name was Louis Pasteur. When Pasteur was a young boy in France, he was very curious. Louis was especially interested in medicine, so he spent many hours every day with the chemist who lived in his small town. The chemist sold pills, cough syrups, and other types of medicine, just as modem pharmacists do today. At that time, the chemist had to make all the medicines himself. Young Louis enjoyed watching the chemist as he worked and listening to him helping the customers who came to him each day. Pasteur decided that one day he wanted to help people, too. As a schoolboy, Pasteur worked slowly and carefully. At first, his teachers thought that young Louis might be a slow learner. Through elementary school, high school, and college, Pasteur worked the same thoughtful way. In fact he was not a slow learner, but a very intelligent young man. He became a college professor and a scientist, and he continued to work very carefully. Because of Pasteur's patient methods, he was able to learn many things about germs. For example, germs cause meat and milk to spoil. They also cause many serious diseases. Pasteur was studying about the germs that cause rabies when Joseph Meister became ill. In fact, Pasteur believed he had a cure for rabies, but he had never given it to a person before. At first, Pasteur was afraid to treat Joseph, but his doctor said the child was dying. Pasteur gave Joseph medicine for ten days. Slowly, the child became better. Pasteur's treatment cured him. During his life time, Pasteur studied germs and learned how they cause diseases in animals and people. He produced medicines that stop many of these illnesses. Louis Pasteur died on September 28, 1895, at the age of 72. Modern medicine continues to benefit from the work of this great scientist. 1. On December 28, 1895, the Lumiere brothers showed short films in a café in Paris. One of the films showed a train coming towards the audience. This was so realistic that the audience screamed. Since then, film makers have used many different techniques, or 'special effects', to entertain audiences. In 1899, another Frenchman, George Melies, made a movie called The Conjurer. In the film, he disappeared. How was this possible? Early film makers stopped the camera and then started it, again. When the camera was stopped the person in front of the camera changed or disappeared. Then the camera was started again. Filmmakers still use this technique to make people see things that didn't happen in real life in front of the camera. Movie makers use another old technique: small models for large objects. One of the most famous special effects in movie history was King Kong in a 1933 film. The huge gorilla scared audiences when he climbed the Empire State Building. But the real King Kong was a model and was actually 18 inches high! The movie makers used the stop motion technique. Workers put the model of the gorilla in one position and took a picture. Then they moved it a little bit and took another picture. For one second on the screen, there were twenty-four pictures of King Kong. Recently, computers have become important in special effects. In 1996, the movie Toy Story was the first movie made completely of computer-generated images and characters. Over 800,000 hours of computer time went into the final film. The recent series of Star Wars has made extensive use of digital computer images. In fact, in some scenes 95% of the screen contained images made by computers. And the director George Lucas even took facial expressions of the actors on film and mixed them together in different ways with a computer. The art of film making never stops. What magical effects will movie makers use in the future? You'll see them at the movies! The art of special effects is. using various techniques to amuse the audience. very modern. used in French films only. 1. EARLY INVENTIONS Some inventions, like the telephone and the computer, have completely changed the world. However, most inventions just make our lives a little easier or more enjoyable. Imagine you’re enjoying a day at the beach. You’re probably surrounded by everyday inventions that you aren’t aware of. Here are just a few. Sunglasses were invented in 1929 by Sam Foster. He began selling them on the beach in New Jersey, USA. They were worn by American fighter pilots in the Second World War, and after that they quickly became fashionable. Sun cream to protect your skin was invented by the French chemist Eugene Schueller in 1936. He started the cosmetics company, L’Oréal. Sun cream to help your skin go brown was invented in 1944 by the American chemist, Benjamin Green. Coca-Cola was invented by John Pemberton n 1886. He sold about nine drinks a day for the first year. In the world today, about 7,000 Coca-Cola products are sold every second. Sandwiches are named after an English aristocrat, John Montague, the Earl of Sandwich. He was born in 1718. He loved to eat beef between slices of bread so that he could play games with the other hand. The ballpoint pen was invented in 1938 by a Hungarian journalist called Laszlo Biro. He used newspaper ink because it dries quickly. Today, we often use the word ‘biro’ to mean ‘ballpoint pen’. Elastic is made of rubber. It’s used in many of the clothes that we wear. It was invented in 1820 by Thomas Hancock, an English inventor. Mayonnaise is made of eggs, olive oil and salt. It was invented in 1905 in New York, USA. The inventor was Richard Hellman. His wife sold the new product at the family shop – Richard Hellman’s Deli – in large glass bottles. The mayonnaise was very popular and is still made and sold today. A. It tells the true story of Diane Evans and her fight to save the African mountain gorillas from extinction. Marian Gray is great in the role of Evans, a strong, independent woman who decides to go away from her family and travel to Africa. She has been asked by Dr Louis Leakey (acted by Iain Cuthbertson) to study mountain gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. One hundred years ago thousands of gorillas lived in the mountains of Africa. During the twentieth century however, increased farming reduced the natural habitat of the gorillas. At the same time, hunters killed gorillas for their skins. Now the gorillas live in small family groups in a few mountain-top regions. Only a few hundred mountain gorillas remain and the species is in danger of becoming extinct. The film tells Evans’s fight to ensure the survival of the species and gives the audience beautiful views of the African countryside, and wonderful pictures of the mountain gorillas. Bryan Brown gives a fine performance as photographer Bob Campbell. Campbell is interested in Evans’s hard work and strength. Their relationship is not given a chance, though, as Evans refuses to leave her mountain-top home and the gorillas, which, by now, she thinks of as her family. Michael Apted’s direction manages to capture some beautiful pictures, both happy and sad. He shows Evans as a woman whose love of her work in the end causes her death. Because of Evans’s work, there are now more mountain gorillas than before. Since her death, the important work that she carried out has been continued by others. Happily, governments in Central Africa are now more serious about conserving nature, and the future of the mountain gorillas is looking more secure. The film will appeal to everyone, young and old alike, who believes that one person really can make a difference. A. Answer the following questions? 1. Since the beginning of history, Man has been inventing new devices, tools and machines to meet his daily needs. These inventions have made our life easier. They have allowed us to save much time and effort, but, on the other hand, they have made us depend on the new machines and instruments. In AD 100 Hero of Alexandria designed the early steam engine, which laid the foundation stone for the modern petrol-driven car that was built by Karl Benz in 1885. The car is a real revolution in the field of transportation in that it has shortened distances and allowed people to travel much faster. The car is equipped today with a combination of other new inventions. For example, we use modern forms of the electric light bulb, which was invented by Thomas Edison in 1879, not only to give off light inside the car when necessary, but also, for headlights on the front and at the back to give signals. These lights are very important both for lighting and for safety reasons. Computers are also used in cars. Different sorts of computers control electronic devices, and can tell the driver which way to go. The computer is the result of the invention of the silicon chip produced by Texas instruments in 1958. The first television set was invented by John Logie Baird in 1926. TVs are seen in some big family cars. Kids enjoy watching cartoon films on children's channels. Similarly, adults enjoy watching football matches live on TV while travelling for long hours. Both surely will have a nice time with the help of this interesting device. Intermediate General Certificate Examination – Reset 2005 A. Answer the following questions. 1. Soichiro Honda Soichiro Honda was born in 1906 in a small village in Japan. His family was poor. Soichiro had eight brothers and sisters. Sadly, five of them died when they were young because they did not have good medical care. When Soichiro was eight years old, he saw a motorcar for the first time. He was amazed by it. For the next 50 years, he loved machines on wheels. When he was 15 years old, Soichiro left his village to work at an auto repair shop in Tokyo. It was then that Honda discovered motorcycles. He spent all of his free time fixing and riding motorcycles. He returned to his village six years later to open his own garage. Soon he owned several shops and had over 50 employees. At the same time, he began to build race motorcycles and cars. Honda loved to race, and he became one of Japan's most famous drivers. In 1936 his racing car crashed while he was driving at 100 miles per hour and he had serious injuries. It took him a year and a half to recover. After this, his family begged him to stop racing. He looked for a less dangerous job and finally decided to become a manufacturer. At first, he manufactured engine parts. The Japanese used a lot of his engine parts in the World War. In 1948, after the war, he started the Honda Motor Company. He started the company with only $3,300. He made his first machines from engine parts that the military did not need after the war. These machines were not real motorcycles; they were bicycles with motors. People bought them because they needed a good form of transportation. As Honda's business grew, he began to make different types of motorcycles. By 1959 his motorcycles were selling all over Japan. But, there were 50 other motorcycle makers in Japan at the time. In 1958, Honda designed a lightweight motorcycle called the Super Cub. It was a huge success and Honda made a lot of money. Two years later, Honda built the world's biggest motorcycle factory in Japan. By the 1960 the Super Cub was popular all over Asia. But Honda wanted the motorcycle to be popular all over the world. In Europe, he put his motorcycles in difficult races to show how good they were. In the United States of America, he tried a different method. He used a magazine ad with the word "You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda". Readers who had never ridden a motorcycle saw the ad. The ad showed that motorcycles were not just for crazy young people who wore black leather jackets. They were good for other people too. The company sold thousands of motorcycles to new riders. Honda then started to put the ads on television. This was also very successful. For example, he put an ad for his motorcycle on during the Academy Awards program. Millions of people watched that program, and on the next day, sales of the motorcycle went up. By 1968, Honda had sold 1 million motorcycles in the United States. In 1963, his company started to make cars. In 1975, it produced the Civic; the next year, the Accord; and then in 1978, the Prelude. Soon, the company was one of the leading companies in the world.
