We have already been welcomed so warmly by Rabbi Shpeen, Shara Siegfeld, Debbie Sokoler, Kathy Golderman, Cantor Groper and the entire Search Committee and Officers, and we are looking forward to meeting the rest of you and being a part of the congregational family. As you may have already heard, Rabbi Shpeen and I met many years ago at a Regional Biennial meeting. There was a special clergy track and he and I were paired together in chevruta (study partners) for the day. Something clicked and we vowed to someday be able to work together – and here we are! Congregation Beth Emeth and Albany JCC Health and Services Fair for Adults and Seniors 340 Whitehall Road, Albany Sunday, May 15, 10:30 am - 2:30 pm Free health screenings, information booths about area resources, refreshments, quick adult haircuts and therapeutic massage will be available. Volunteers needed during shifts: 8-10:30 am, 10:15-12:30 pm, 12:15-2:30 pm contact Helene Ainspan, [email protected] Businesses interested in displaying: contact Claire Sigal at [email protected] 2 I know that Beth Emeth has a rich history and beautiful musical traditions, and I hope to honor those traditions and build on them in joyful and meaningful ways that add both spirituality and participation to worship services. The first thing I’ll be doing when I arrive will be calling all the fall B’nai Mitzvah students so that they can get to know me and I can help them to prepare for their upcoming simchas. Enriching the Religious School choir is also on the top of my list of things to do when I arrive. Most of all, I look forward to sharing in life cycle events with all of you. I never forget what a privilege it is to be able to kvell with Bar/Bat Mitzvah parents as their children are called to the Torah for the first time, look into the beautiful faces of brides and grooms as they pledge their love to one another under the chuppah, and cry with friends as I help them through the Jewish rituals surrounding loss and grieving. I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do as a cantor, and I feel even luckier knowing I will be doing it in this new warm and loving community. I’ll see you in a couple of months. Warmly, Cantor Jodi Schechtman Celebrating Micki President’s Perspective Keep On Keepin’ On Joanne Baldini, Lauren Iselin, Alan Iselin, Gayle Engel and Harold Iselin It is amazing how quickly two years can pass. It seems like only yesterday that I was fortunate to become President of Beth Emeth. I wanted to leave my own stamp on Beth Emeth while building on the strong foundation that prior presidents had put in place. Next Dor focus groups and other research taught us that congregants wanted to build connections with people in their temple community. I could relate to this as I know how important temple friendships are to me. What’s been done so far: • Enhanced interaction between the board and congregants • Fostered interactions between congregants • Better communication with our temple family, most notably, our vibrant new Bulletin and improved web site. We’ve also: • Worked on strengthening our financial position by increasing the underwriting of specific programs • Built up our endowment • Accomplished the transition to a new Cantor and restructured professional staff. What happens next? You will have to read next month’s column to find out. Besides the obvious mission of feeding the hungry, Marni plans to work with our Religious School and Beth Emeth community to widen our temple's awareness of Diane's Farm; increase our understanding of the Jewish value of feeding the hungry and of course, increase our volunteer base. If you have a few hours to share – we welcome any help you can provide and also welcome friends from our community as well. No experience is necessary! Mazel Tov To... Diane’s Farm would not have existed were it not for the vision and hard work of Cheryl Gelder-Kogan, Barry Kogan and The Goodman family, who took this amazing idea and made it into a reality – where Beth Emeth is able to feed the hungry in our community. B’Shalom, Debbie Sokoler, Programming Director New Members We welcome to our Beth Emeth family: Barbara Manning 4 Kathy’s Comments Characters Welcome Garage Sale June 25-27 Drop Off Dates and Times Sunday, June 19, 9 am- 3 pm Monday, June 20, 9 am - 8 pm Tuesday, June 21, 9 am - 5 pm Abby Nash, Kathy Golderman, Rose Golden and Rabbi Shpeen We have just celebrated Passover and the retelling of our ancestors’ story of going from slavery to freedom. I enjoy hearing this exciting story every year; especially the way my brother Peter reads a certain paragraph. The story of Passover is an exhilarating one, of course, and I realize that each one of us has an individual story here at Congregation Beth Emeth. I have the pleasure of speaking with many of our prospective members before they officially become members. It fascinates me to learn their unique stories about their connections to Judaism and why they would like to be a part of Beth Emeth. I love watching the individuals and families then become entwined with others and enrich our collective Beth Emeth story. Many new congregants have thought about joining for quite a while, but were “waiting for the right time.” It is always the right time to be a part of our congregation. Why not reach out to those who you know, and invite them to become new characters in our wonderful, continuing CBE story? Kathy Golderman, Executive Director [email protected] Did You Know... To mark the occasion, Sisterhood will present gifts to each confirmand, a symbolic gesture connecting our students with the support they have received from Sisterhood since consecration. By joining the celebration, recognizing this milestone, and contributing financially to the confirmation program, the Limud Fund reflects our longstanding foundational aspect of Sisterhood’s educational mission. The month of March was Sisterhood month and we had our very successful “Limud No-Show Fundraiser.“ We would like to thank all our Sisterhood donors who participated. Elizabeth Epstein ([email protected] or 439.6730) and Lisa Finkle ([email protected] or 439.4087) Sisterhood Co-Presidents 6 On Sunday May 29 there will be a perfect event to bring your children and / or your grandchildren along to, that will help them learn about our Jewish War Veterans, and to better understand the importance of Memorial Day. Brotherhood will be organizing placing flags on the graves of our Jewish War Veterans who are interred at our Beth Emeth Cemeteries (yes there is more than one!). This is a great opportunity to come and visit our beautiful cemetery and celebrate! Children are able to wander, to find, to learn by doing and to remember. I want to thank Marlene Pressman who has been making the deliveries to the food pantries. There is a Arielle Nash (far right) and NFTY friends at NFTY/ RJV Teen Advocacy Day Now, we are in the middle of our counting of the Omer in anticipation of receiving Torah. We should ask just how we, ourselves, receive Torah. Torah literally means “instruction” and education is the essence of Torah. Jewish learning lies at the core of our values, tradition, and very survival. Einhorn Center for Jewish Education Always more to learn - Lunch and Learn with Rabbi Mendel There is Much to Learn The second night of Passover is the start of the counting of the Omer which tracks the 49 days until Shavuot. Maimonides taught that we count these days between Pesach and Shavuot because we are anxiously awaiting the experience of “receiving the Torah” which is commemorated on Shavuot. At CBE we celebrate with our confirmation program on this day! As we count toward Shavuot, we should think of the many learning opportunities available at Congregation Beth Emeth. Obviously, first, our religious school and confirmation programming, but beyond that, there are so many opportunities for adults. Saturday morning: Torah study, Wednesday: Lunch and Learn-just this past month, Rabbi Shpeen taught intro to Talmud study, additionally there are amazing 92Y programs, Book Group, Judaic interest trips and so many other enriching educational programs that fill our calendar! As we are immersed in spring and this season of counting, let us follow the words of the great sage, Hillel, “Go and Learn.” Shara Siegfeld, Director of Education 7 Kids . A very special to thank you to our friends at: B’nai Mitzvah for donating services at our Purim Carnival. As is our custom, all b’nai mitzvah participate in candle lighting and Kiddush at services on the Friday evening prior to their bar or bat mitzvah. Sam Cooper, son of David Cooper and Tanya Tersago, will become a bar mitzvah on May 7. Sam plays soccer for both the Bethlehem Modified and the Travel Team. Sam plays tuba in the Middle School Concert Band and is a member of the Middle School History Bowl Team that is going to Nationals. Sam enjoys spending time with friends and family, eating good food and trying to visit all of the major league baseball stadiums (he has visited has 13 so far). 8 Natan Emil Laufer, son of Agi and Dr. Andras, will become a bar mitzvah on May 14. Natan likes music and sports. He has been playing the guitar since he was 8 years old and the trumpet for four years. Natan plays soccer on his school team and likes to ski. He is also interested in food and cooking, familiar with Hungarian and international cuisines. Natan would like to volunteer at Albany Medical Center’s pediatric unit, to read to and play with patients. Avi Micah Herschkowitz, son of Rebecca and Jason, will become a bar mitzvah on May 28. Avi loves playing video games, so much in fact, that he wants to be a video game engineer when he grows up. Avi will spend his fourth summer at Buck's Rock Summer Camp. He enjoys working in the computer shop at camp where he learns computer coding and design programs to further his knowledge of gaming and graphic design. “From Consecration to Confirmation” - Confirmation 2016 Confirmands Parents Tess Bastiani Merideth Bastiani David Bastiani Ruth and Rob Brass Tanya Tersago and Stephen Hamilton David Cooper Karen and Mark Friedman Karen and Mark Friedman Kathy and Billy Golderman Liz and Jerry Goldstein Valerie Strauss and Laurence Kranich Abby and Marc Nash Rose Golden and John Nicoletta Wendy and David Palat Lisa and Jonathan Pierce Meredith and Paul Schoenblum Jacob Brass Julianna Grace Cooper Brett Jacob Friedman Erica Bryn Friedman Haley Michelle Golderman Jonah D. Linking our new confirmands, L’dor V’Dor, from generation to generation, they will receive the Torah passed along to them by the confirmands from years past. Below are listed those members of Beth Emeth who are marking a special anniversary of their confirmation this spring. Each will receive a personal invitation to participate in the Confirmation Service on June 10th representing their milestone anniversary class. IF, perchance there are those who are members of Beth Emeth and do not appear on the list below with their classmates, PLEASE let Rabbi Shpeen’s administrative assistant, Susan Libby (436-9761 ext 224), know as soon as possible so we can extend an invitation to them as well. If there is a member of your family or someone that you know who lives out of the area or lives in Albany but is not a member of Beth Emeth and was in any of the classes below and would like to be included, let us know and we will gladly extend to them an invitation to share in this event. This is a very special and meaningful ceremony each year and one that is deeply appreciated by the confirmation students and their families as well as the entire congregation. PLEASE, if your name appears below, mark your calendars as we look forward to your presence representing your class and linking the Confirmation Class of 2016 to the rich history of confirmation at Beth Emeth.
