Cortina-Calalzo. Long Way of the Dolomites.
First leg Distance: 48 km Difficulty level: 4.1 Cortina-Calalzo. Long Way of the Dolomites. 1 The Veneto encompasses a vast variety of landscapes and ecosystems. On this itinerary, you will ride through woods filled with conifers native to the Nordic countries as well as Holm oak woods that are present throughout the Mediterranean. Each leg of the journey has surprising natural delights in store for you. The starting point is the Passo Cimabanche (mountain pass), a natural divider between the Valle d’Ampezzo (1) and the Puster Valley, and the first section follows the same route as the 88 “Long Way of Dolomiti” on the old railway tracks that were built in the Dolomites during World War I and closed down in 1964. Leftover from that period are the original stations (3), tunnels, and bridges suspended over spectacular, plummeting gorges. The downhill slopes included on this trip are consistent and easily managed; the ground is paved in 2 some sections and dirt in others. Near Cortina d’Ampezzo the trail is paved and a lot of people go for walks here, so you need to pay extra attention. Without going into town, the route maintains its high-altitude and passes by exclusive hotels and stately residences. After leaving the famous resort valley behind, the bike trail borders the Boite River to the south until reaching San Vito di Cadore (4), where the towering massif of monte Antelao challenges the unmistakable silhouette of monte Pelmo (2). In Borca di Cadore, the trail moves away from the Boite, which wanders off deep into the valley. The new cycle bridges and old tunnels allow you to safely pedal your way through the picturesque towns of Vodo, Venas, Valle, and Tai. In Pieve di Cadore, you should leave enough time to stop at a few places of artistic interest, in addition to the family home of Tiziano Vecellio, the renowned Renaissance painter. The town also has a number of interesting historical buildings, an Ancient Roman archaeological site, a noteworthy archdeacon’s church, and two museums – one focusing on the history of the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore (union of communities in the Cadore area) and another unique museum featuring eyeglasses. Once you’ve reached Calalzo di Cadore, you can take the train to Belluno - this section doesn’t have a protected bike lane and in some places the secondary roads don’t guarantee an adequate level of safety. 3 3146 3146 cycle path with asphalt Monte Cristallo 1 IAT (tourist information office) Cortina d’Ampezzo Parco Naturaledelle delle Parco Naturale Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Dolomiti d’Ampezzo P parking bicycle assistance Gruppo Sorapiss railway station bus and bike service hospital Calalzo San Vito di Cadore di Cadore Gruppo dell’Antelao Pieve Borca di Cadore di Cadore Vodo di Cadore Tai Monte Pelmo di Cadore 2 3 Do km m 7k o1 c bia b Biagio S.S.Biagio Do 17 T.
