DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! —
BEARING GOOD FRUIT
Are you bearing good fruit in your life?
Christ tells us that “By their fruits you will
know them” (Mt 7:16) and that trees not
bearing fruit can be cut down (Lk 13:9). We
can grow in our capacity to bear good fruit
through prayer, study, generosity, and
evangelization. It is also important to
cultivate virtue, which is the “habitual and
firm disposition to do good” (CCC, 1833). The
Church teaches us that there are four
cardinal virtues (prudence, justice,
fortitude, and temperance) and three
theological virtues (faith, hope,
and charity).

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS
On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent the catechumens and candidates in RCIA will experience the
Scrutinies. Lent is a time to scrutinize ourselves and
more closely model our lives on the life of
Christ. The Scrutinies are a special and
significant experience for those who have
committed themselves in the Rite of Election. Please pray for our catechumens
and candidates on their journey in faith.

HEARING ASSISTANCE HAS ARRIVED!
For those who need help overcoming background noise,
reverberation or distance from the microphones in
church, we have purchased 10 handheld receivers that
connect directly to the audio of our sound system. This
allows you to sit anywhere in church and listen at the
volume you need without disturbing others! Receivers
will be available to borrow before each weekend Mass
and are to be returned immediately after. The receivers
accept universal headphones/earphones. For hygienic
reasons, please purchase your own headphones, e.g.,
Walgreens, Target, Best Buy, etc. Keep them in your
purse or glove compartment; that way they will be easily
accessible when you come to Mass! There is a limited
number of over-the-ear headphones to borrow. We also
are pleased to offer neck loops for parishioners who
have telephone coil hearing aids.
Beginning the first weekend in March, receivers will be
available in the small office at the East end of the gathering space. A volunteer will be there to assist you.
We are extremely grateful to the parishioners who gifted
the system to the parish. Your generosity is a blessing
to us!

STEPHEN MINISTRY
THE BUSHES
The bramble bushes
were created with
wood from oak and
cherry. The Oak
branches are 1/4
sawn oak which exposes the ray cells in
the oak- revealing a
cool grain pattern.
This sawing technique was used a lot
in the 19th century to create attractive grained wood for
furniture making and veneers. It is also called Tiger
Oak. The branches where twisted 1-1/2 times after being steamed for 2 plus hours. The steaming process
heats and hydrates the wood essentially plasticizing the
lignin in the wood fibers allowing for the wood to be
twisted and formed into the shapes only your imagination limits. For plant physiologists, plasticizing lignin is
process which is counter intuitive, lignin is the most important chemical component in plant cell walls which
drive the structure and rigidity of the wood fibers. Upon
cooling and drying the lignin is "set" and holds its new
shape and form with no additional convincing. The
thorns or the brambles were created with cherry with a
dark cherry stain to aid in contrast. The bases were
made with pew end caps from the old pews from St
Blaise parish. They still have the notches on the back of
them to hold the seats and backs of the old pews. Each
of the bramble bushes is made up of 14 arms or
branches with two or three thorns each. The fourteen
branches reminds us of both the Stations of the Cross
in addition to the Corporal & Spiritual Acts of Mercy.
The sculpture was created for Holy Spirit Parish as way
to honor our pastor, Father Rich Bockskopf's 20th anniversary at our parish. The sculpture was a gift of the
Caverly family, given in honor of Father Bockskopf.

Rediscover Jesus
An Invitation
By: Matthew Kelly
The “Year of Study”...
Chapter 8
Jesus Was a Radical
Point to Ponder: Ask Jesus to help you get to the root of things in your life.
Ask him to help you embrace the truth.
Verse to Live: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.”
~ Philippians 2:5
Question to Consider: When was the last time you had the courage to seek out
the root of an important issue?
Prayer: Jesus, point me toward the root of things, and give me an extra nudge
when I am tempted to settle for the shallow and the superficial.

QUOTE: (In Scripture)
“I am the way and the truth and the life.”
6 | Third Sunday of Lent, February 28, 2016
~ Jn. 14:6
Go make disciples of
all nations
Scripture passage
They devoted themselves to the teaching of the
apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking
of the bread and to the prayers. Awe came upon
everyone, and many wonders and signs were done
through the apostles. All who believed were together
and had all things in common; they would sell their
property and possessions and divided them among
all according to each one’s need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple
area and to breaking bread in their homes. They
ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of
heart, praising God and enjoying favor with all the
people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who ere being saved.
Acts of the Apostles 2:42-47
FR. RICH’S REFLECTION
As a child living in Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in
south St. Louis, I had my first experience of fellowship.
I didn’t call it fellowship or community but I experienced a group of people who cared for one another,
enjoyed spending time together and celebrated their
faith. I remember Teen Town, the bowling alley, selling soda at Sunday bingo, the plays in Goeller Hall,
going to Soulard Market with the School Sisters of
Notre Dame and of course my school classmates. All
of these are examples of fellowship.
Fellowship might be a foreign term to Catholics. But
it is at the heart of what Jesus calls us to. As Jesus
gathered people he called them to spend time with
Him and each other to offer support and encouragement. Remember the many times in the gospels
where Jesus gathers people. The visits to the home
of Martha, Mary and Lazarus; the feeding of the five
thousand; the meals at the home of tax collectors.
A QUOTE FROM LANCE BERKMAN
As sort of an elder-statesman on the team, Berkman is often approached for advice by younger
players—about the game, about an aspect of
faith, or just about being a husband and father
and dealing with problems that come up because of the pressures inherent in their chosen
occupation. He is comfortable and happy to talk
to anyone about any of those topics.
“It’s not like I’m sitting on top of a mountain,
cross-legged, waiting for people to come up to
me,” Berkman said, “We certainly have discussions in our Bible studies and chapel time. We
talk amongst each other. If I have a strong feeling about something or an experience that I think
can benefit the group, I will share it.
“To me the baseball talk is secondary. The opportunity to speak and get into guys’ lives and help
on a personal level any way I can is far more important than professionally.”
Intentional Walk by Rob Rains
PERSONAL REFLECTION

What experiences of fellowship can
you recall at Holy Spirit Parish?
