Factfile
1.1 Origin of the tournament
A new chapter in the history of women’s hockey was inaugurated when the Royal Dutch Hockey
Association (KNHB) organised a women’s hockey tournament at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen in
June 1987, at the same time as the 9th edition of the Men’s Champions Trophy.
This event involved five of the top six ranked teams at the 1986 World Cup (in Amstelveen):
Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Great Britain and Australia. The only leading country, at that time,
not competing in Amstelveen was West Germany. The 1986 World Cup-silver medallist and 1984
Olympic-silver medallist did not accept the original invitation and was replaced by Korea (the host country of the 1988 Olympics).
In April 1987 the Council of the FIH
(International Hockey Federation)
decided to recognise this
tournament as the first Women’s
Champions Trophy. The Women’s
Champions Trophy is counterpart to
the Men’s Champions Trophy, which
was established in 1978 by the FIH
following a proposal from the
Pakistan Hockey Federation, to
promote international hockey.
Netherlands, at that time World
Champions (1986), Olympic
Champions (1984) and European
Champions (1984), became the first ever winners of the Women’s Champions Trophy. The Dutch team
won all five of their matches, scoring 21 goals. Australia finished second and Korea were ranked third.
The FIH decided to stage the Women’s Champions Trophy once every two years, but in 1999, after the
seventh Champions Trophy held in Brisbane, Australia, the rhythm was change d to today's one-yearcycle. This year’s edition, the 20th in history, will take place in Rosario, Argentina. It is the second
time in the women’s competition that the field has been expanded to include eight teams instead of
the usual six. Olympic Champions Netherlands will be joined in Pool A by Great Britain, China and
Japan while World Champions Argentina will have Germany, Korea and New Zealand in Pool B.
Last year Netherlands beat Argentina in the gold medal game after a penalty shoot-out (picture).
Maartje Paumen scored a hat-trick to help her team recover from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match, before
two goalless periods of extra time lead to the first penalty shoot-out in Champions Trophy history.
New Zealand took bronze beating Korea 3-2 in the bronze medal match. Charlotte Harrison scored a
late winner with less than 40 seconds of the match remaining. The win gave New Zealand their first
ever medal at an FIH Champions Trophy.

Fu Baorong is a cornerstone in attack for the Chinese national team and feared by defenders for her
vision and scoring ability. After finishing an agonising fourth at the 2004 Olympic Games, the dynamic
forward helped China's home Olympic campaign reach the final in Beijing before succumbing to the
Netherlands 2-0 to finish with silver.
Known by her teammates as 'Da Bao' she first experienced international success at the 2002
Champions Trophy in Macau where China defeated Argentina 3-1 on penalty strokes in the final. Since
then she has also helped China to silver at the 2003 and 2006 Champions Trophy tournaments.
Captain of the Chinese national team, she has also been shortlisted for FIH Player of the Year in 2002,
2003, 2004, 2008 and 2010 and is a four-time FIH All Star.

Kaori Fujio (née Chiba) is the talisman of the Japanese hockey team. Her strike power led Japan to
best-ever fifth place results in both the 2006 World Cup and 2007 Champions Trophy tournaments.
She was again her country's spearhead at the 2010 World Cup in Rosario, s coring five goals.
After suffering serious knee ligament damage at the beginning of 2003, she used the time not only to
rehabilitate her knee, but also to watch hours of footage and focus on how the world's top forwards
'ghost' into position to strike on goal. Fujio plays for the SONY Ichinomiya club in the Japan Hockey
League and studies at Yamanashi Gakuin University, Kofu in central Japan.

of extra time no goals were scored. At that time (8.15 p.m.) it was too dark to decide the match by penalty strokes.
