This event involved five of the top six ranked teams at the 1986 World Cup (in Amstelveen): Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Great Britain and Australia. The only leading country, at that time, not competing in Amstelveen was West Germany. The 1986 World Cup-silver medallist and 1984 Olympic-silver medallist did not accept the original invitation and was replaced by Korea (the host country of the 1988 Olympics). In April 1987 the Council of the FIH (International Hockey Federation) decided to recognise this tournament as the first Women’s Champions Trophy. The Women’s Champions Trophy is counterpart to the Men’s Champions Trophy, which was established in 1978 by the FIH following a proposal from the Pakistan Hockey Federation, to promote international hockey. Netherlands, at that time World Champions (1986), Olympic Champions (1984) and European Champions (1984), became the first ever winners of the Women’s Champions Trophy. The Dutch team won all five of their matches, scoring 21 goals. Australia finished second and Korea were ranked third. The FIH decided to stage the Women’s Champions Trophy once every two years, but in 1999, after the seventh Champions Trophy held in Brisbane, Australia, the rhythm was change d to today's one-yearcycle. This year’s edition, the 20th in history, will take place in Rosario, Argentina. It is the second time in the women’s competition that the field has been expanded to include eight teams instead of the usual six. Olympic Champions Netherlands will be joined in Pool A by Great Britain, China and Japan while World Champions Argentina will have Germany, Korea and New Zealand in Pool B. Last year Netherlands beat Argentina in the gold medal game after a penalty shoot-out (picture). Maartje Paumen scored a hat-trick to help her team recover from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match, before two goalless periods of extra time lead to the first penalty shoot-out in Champions Trophy history. New Zealand took bronze beating Korea 3-2 in the bronze medal match. Charlotte Harrison scored a late winner with less than 40 seconds of the match remaining. The win gave New Zealand their first ever medal at an FIH Champions Trophy. 1. - Copyright Infostrada Sports Group / FIH Argentina FIH CHAMPIONS TROPHY Women 2012 Factfile 1.2 Schedule Venue: Estadio Mundialista, Rosario (Argentina) Pool A China Great Britain Japan Netherlands - Pool B Argentina Germany Korea New Zealand CHN GBR JPN NED Pool Matches Date Nr Saturday 28 January 1 2 3 4 Sunday 29 January 5 6 7 8 Monday 30 January ARG GER KOR NZL Time (local) Pool Match A Netherlands 12:30 15:00 A Great Britain 18:30 B Germany 20:00 B Argentina 12:30 15:00 17:30 20:00 vs vs vs vs China Japan Korea New Zealand A A B B China Great Britain New Zealand Germany vs vs vs vs Japan Netherlands Korea Argentina A Netherlands China New Zealand Argentina vs vs vs vs Japan Great Britain Germany Korea Rest Day Tuesday 31 January 9 10 11 12 Wednesday 01 February Classification Matches Date Thursday 02 February - 12:30 15:00 17:30 20:00 A B B Rest Day Nr 13 14 15 16 Time 12:30 15:00 17:30 20:00 Round Quarter Quarter Quarter Quarter Match 1st Pool A 2nd Pool B 2nd Pool A 1st Pool B vs vs vs vs Friday 03 February 17 18 17:30 20:00 5/8 5/8 Loser 13 Loser 15 vs Loser 14 vs Loser 16 Saturday 04 February 19 20 17:30 20:00 Semi Final Semi Final Winner 13 Winner 15 vs Winner 14 vs Winner 16 Sunday 05 February 21 22 23 24 12:30 15:00 17:30 20:00 Final Final Final Final Loser 17 Winner 17 Loser 19 Winner 19 vs vs vs vs Final Final Final Final 7-8 5-6 3-4 1-2 4th 3rd 3rd 4th Pool Pool Pool Pool B A B A Loser 18 Winner 18 Loser 20 Winner 20 Note: Subject to the approval of the FIH Representative and Tournament Director any match(es) may be rescheduled to accommodate international television requirements. 2. - Copyright Infostrada Sports Group / FIH 2 : Teams Argentina Nr Name Date of Birth Position Carlos Retegui 19 Dec 1969 Coach Int. Since then she has also helped China to silver at the 2003 and 2006 Champions Trophy tournaments. Captain of the Chinese national team, she has also been shortlisted for FIH Player of the Year in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2010 and is a four-time FIH All Star. 4. - Copyright Infostrada Sports Group / FIH Argentina FIH CHAMPIONS TROPHY Women 2012 Teams Germany Nr Name Date of Birth Position Int.
