Corporal Works of Mercy:
Clothing the Naked

It was not common that people had multiple sets of clothing until the Industrial
Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Nakedness was a sign of abject poverty.
While many people had one or two sets
of clothing, a poor person might wear
rags or nothing.
In Scripture, Exodus 22 proscribes that if
you take a cloak as collateral on a loan, it
needs to be given back at night because
the borrower has no other clothing for
warmth at night. In the gospels Jesus
tells us that if someone asks for a shirt,
we are to give them our coat as well
(Matt 5:40); and, if we have two shirts,
we are to give one away (Luke 3:11).
These are not injunctions that bother us
today, for most of us have multiple
shirts, coats, shoes, and pants. So what
does this Work of Mercy mean for us today?
It could mean we need to reduce our
clothing until we are at parity with the
poor. To live as they do. It could mean
that we need to reduce our standard of
living to better provide more resources
for those who have less. (Maybe you
heard the statistic over Christmas that
the United States uses more electricity
powering Christmas lights than El Salvador and Ethiopia use in a year.) Many of
us found an opportunity to live this injunction by buying coats, socks -- even
shoes for the men who spent the night at
our overnight shelter over the Christmas
holidays. Their appreciation of these gifts
was touching.
If clothing the naked is no longer a common opportunity in this day and age,
what would be the equivalent sign of
God’s mercy?

"Entering into the Word of God's Mercy"

As we celebrate this Jubilee Year of Mercy, join the St.
Louise Parish community in a day-long retreat, with lunch
provided. Through music, reflection, meditation and art, Bob
will guide us on a tour of several Gospel stories so that we
may enter more fully into the Word of God's mercy. Registration is required for the retreat, www.stlouise.org/

About Bob Hurd: Bob is a teacher, composer and liturgist.
He is known as an early pioneer of bilingual music. Some of
