Rm. 1 Church Page 3 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe A Message from our Pastor Dear Friends, Back in 1998 a movie was produced that touched a lot of people. The movie began with a man visiting with his family in France. As they walk through a massive cemetery the man collapses on his knees in front of a particular grave overwhelmed with emotion. The movie then flashes back to the invasion of Normandy in World War 2 as Allied troops storm the beach of Normandy at D Day and tells the story of how the elderly man came to be at the cemetery in the first place. This man was the only surviving brother of three in a family and the movie tells the story of how he was rescued by a squad of US Army soldiers who were sent to bring him home to his mother. All the people who were sent to rescue him died in the effort. The name of the movie is of course Saving Private Ryan. I thought of Saving Private Ryan as I reflected on the feast we celebrate this weekend, the Feast of Christ the King. Christ the King is the Feast that marks the end of the liturgical year. Next weekend, the first Sunday of Advent, is the beginning of the Church’s year. During the coming year we will go through the course of Advent preparing, as the world did for many years, for the coming of Jesus into our history. We will celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas. After a short period of Ordinary Time we will then mark the season of Lent as a time of penance and preparation for Holy Week when we recount the most important week in the history of the world, the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Then after celebrating Christ’s resurrection for a few weeks we will celebrate the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost only to return to Ordinary Time. Even though today’s feast is an ending to the Liturgical Year, I like to think of it as the beginning. Much like the movie, Saving Private Ryan, this feast gives us the ending of the story first. In the second reading from the Book of Revelation, the author tells us that Christ is coming amid the clouds. Every eye will see him including those who denied, persecuted, and even killed Him. Jesus will announce Himself as the Alpha and the Omega (the beginning and the end). He will show Himself as the One who is, was, and is to come. The ending of the story is the return of Jesus Christ to the world. The prophet Daniel in the first reading has a similar vision as the author of Revelations. Daniel sees the Son of Man coming on the clouds of Heaven. He will receive the honor due Him with dominion, glory, and kingship. His final Kingdom will be everlasting and His honor will not be destroyed. Like the Liturgical year, and the movie Saving Private Ryan, Christianity is a story that begins with the ending. We already know that whatever happens in the world, Christ will reign supreme in the end. The ending has already been set. We are living in the ‘flash back’ period of time before the Christian ‘movie’ is concluded. Even though we know the ending of the world’s ‘movie’, our parts in the ending have not yet been completed. We know how the ending of Christianity and world history will be concluded. What we don’t know is how our lives will be finished. That is the only part of the story that is changeable. Maybe it’s time to write the scripts of our lives to match up to end like the movie! Blessings, Fr. Find out what makes Strake Jesuit more than just a school at our Open House on Thursday, December 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Take a guided tour of the school, meet members of the faculty, and learn more about the many academic extracurricular, and spiritual activities available to Strake Jesuit students. The Belles of St. Mary will again be collecting Christmas gift boxes to give to the Seafarers who come in to the Port of Galveston. They are away from their homes and families for Christmas and for months at a time - some are not even allowed to come ashore when they dock. You are welcome to come to the meeting, or you may leave your gift boxes at the church office anytime before December 1st, wrapped in holiday paper (no bows). In an inviting manner, he preaches missions, days of reflection, and retreats with humor and Gospel joy. Fr. Simonetti shares his own account of how the Lord drew him to the priesthood, how he relies upon Christ in the Eucharist, and how Jesus calls each of us to spend time with Him in Adoration. Parishioner Comments We use this CD as a gift to those who sign up for Eucharistic Adoration in our local parish. Another amazing CD on the importance of Adoration in our lives! Powerful and educational! Maria, ND Parish Announcements Strake Jesuit Open House November 22, 2015 Page 6 Elementary Faith Formation & School News A Note from Sandy Dunn A wonderful week for reflection – No school, no Faith Formation classes – time to plan the wonderful Thanksgiving dinner whether you are doing the cooking or traveling to share someone else’s feast. In the faith of our Catholic Church, we are called to celebrate thanksgiving so much more than this one day of the year that we call Thanksgiving. In the worlds of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, when we say ‘I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth”, we are called to live every day of our lives in thanksgiving for those special people in our lives and those special things in our lives. Who are those people who mean so much to us? What are the things in our lives that mean so much to us – a piano given to you as gift, that wonderful violin that you work so hard to bring out its beauty, maybe that catcher’s mitt that you lovingly broke in and slipped under your pillow at night, maybe a special keepsake that belonged to your grandparent. Whatever or whoever – every single day of our lives should be lived in thanksgiving for them. Have a great Thanksgiving – every day of your life! We’ll see you on Wednesday, December 2 or Sunday, December 6 On December 9 and 13, we invite the parents to join us for our special Advent Celebration.
