Seasonal Offerings at the Zoo
This year, the Zoo will be offering three seasonal attractions that
will make every visit an adventure for your whole family! Our
butterfly exhibit, Flutterby: Butterflies in Bloom, returns May 24th
in our picturesque greenhouse just before
the Big Backyard. Visitors can test their
climbing skills on the rock wall in the
Zoo’s Wilderness Plaza. Finally, the new
camel rides next to the Beyond the Fence
area offer guests a memorable experience
with these majestic animals. There is a fee
in addition to Zoo admission for each of
these activities. You can purchase tickets
for each attraction at admissions or at

A long and hard winter
is past us now and
spring is here, making
way for a magical
transformation at
the Zoo. Spring often
means babies, and I am
pleased to announce
that the tree kangaroos at the Roger
Williams Park Zoo have a new addition!
This is the first baby tree kangaroo in
the history of our zoo and one of only
a handful for this endangered species in
the U.S. this year. Tree kangaroos spend
the first 9 months in the mother’s pouch
only occasionally popping their heads out.
Because our youngest resident will not be
visible for some time, we will be posting
pictures of the new joey in its pouch
periodically in the Australasia building.
Due to the fact that this is a very sensitive
time for both the mother and her baby,
the plans to build the new Tree Kangaroo
exhibit are being delayed by several months
so the loud construction does not disturb
the new family.
This year we are bringing your zoo
adventure to an all new level! Giraffe
and seal feedings are back, and you can
now purchase tickets on our website.

guests can ride a camel, scale a rock wall
or meander through our lush butterfly
exhibit, which returns to Roger Williams
Park Zoo by popular demand this season.
Expanded keeper talks and demonstrations
throughout the day are guaranteed to
entertain and educate!
Our zoo has the friendliest and most
knowledgeable staff and volunteers around.
I urge you all to take the time to talk to the
people who work at your zoo and find out
about all the wonderful animals they take
care of as well as learn about our many
conservation initiatives.
Hope to see you real soon, there’s always an
adventure here at the Zoo!

96 Elephants
are
killed
every day in Africa
Yes, you read that number correctly. 96
elephants are killed each day in the wild by
poachers who take the animals’ ivory to sell
on the black market. The ivory is then carved
into intricate designs and eventually makes its
way into the hands of unknowing consumers
throughout the world.
Roger Williams Park Zoo is dedicated to the
conservation of these majestic land giants and
has joined the 96 Elephants Campaign to raise
public awareness of this crisis. This effort was
started by the Wildlife Conservation Society
to ban ivory trade in the U.S. and bolster
elephant security in the wild.
As part of our own efforts to help these
magnificent creatures, we contribute annually
to the International Elephant Foundation and
have in the past and will continue to support
the Tarangire Elephant Project in Tanzania. Tarangire researchers continue their work
to promote peaceful coexistence between
humans and elephants and help locals
understand how poaching affects the ability of
entire herds to survive. In addition, they now
are working to empower residents to disrupt
poachers’ activities. We also have supported
the development of the Association of Zoos
and Aquariums’ National Elephant Center to
help support an effective species survival plan.
This summer we will increase our activities to
educate Rhode Islanders about the elephant
poaching crisis. Meanwhile, please visit our
website at rwpzoo.org/elephant-conservation
to read the 96 Elephants Campaign petition,
and consider signing it and sharing it with your
friends to spread the word.

Bryan Lorber and his wife, Leslie, have always
been philanthropically inclined when it comes to
education, arts and the environment. This is what
attracted Bryan to Roger Williams Park Zoo. His
daughter attended one of the weekly ZooCamps that
are offered during school vacations, and she and
her family became big fans of the Zoo’s educational
programs. “ZooCamp goes above and beyond to
teach children about the environment, conservation
and all about the animals at the Zoo,” said Bryan, “It
inspires kids to care.” Bryan believes that educating
and empowering young and underserved children
in Rhode Island and nearby states is essential to the
direction of this country, and the world. He is a big
Coming in late Spring
Thanks to a generous donation from Alex and
Ani’s Charity by Design, the new Farmyard is on
track to open early this summer in two phases.
It will feature even more of the furry, wooly,
and fluffy friends we all love! Plus, there will be
a brand new walkthrough barn, a farmhouse
stage for shows, and interactive features like play
spaces, a giant tractor that kids can climb on, and
a contact yard where people can touch and feed
some of the farm animals.
The Alex and Ani
Farmyard will
feature several
species of goats, Texel sheep, alpacas,
Guinea hogs, silver fox rabbits, and more!
And of course, Willy the miniature donkey
will be there as well! The exhibit is free
with Zoo admission. There is a nominal
fee to feed the animals.

fan of The Zoomobile because it “brings the zoo right to those who can’t
be there.”
Bryan is also enthusiastic about our conservation efforts, particularly for
reptiles, because he has been fascinated with them ever since he first held
a python at age six. He had the opportunity to meet the Zoo’s Director
of Conservation Programs, Lou Perrotti, and was inspired by the Zoo’s
efforts for threatened or endangered species, like our Timber rattlesnakes
and American burying beetles, both in the field and onsite. “What Lou has
done is put focus on the lesser understood, but equally important animals,
and bring them into a position of status,” said Bryan.
If Bryan’s dreams come true, Rhode Island’s one and only reptile,
amphibian and insect exhibit will be found right here at Roger Williams
Park Zoo. We thank both Bryan and Leslie for all they do.

Many visitors enjoy Hasbro’s Our Big
Backyard. This outdoor exploration area is
full of fun opportunities for kids to discover
all year long. But fewer people have discovered
there is a real gem right next door in Our
House. The “Nature Swap” really engages kids
in the outdoors. Children bring in natural
“found” items which are assigned points and
they collect points to swap for other natural
treasures in the collection. Swap items include
things commonly found in nature like shells,
rocks, acorns, leaves, or pine cones, or artwork
or written pieces children create to convey an
outdoor adventure they experienced. Points
are assigned to these items based on:
• The type of item – how common it is, what
shape it is in, etc.
• What the child knows about the item
• The child’s description of her experience
when she found the item
• The quality and cleanliness of the
item
“The boys have been promoting Nature Swap
in their first grade class … Direct quote from
Dylan, ‘There is this really smart guy named
Mr. Chris who will teach you everything you
want to know about anything in the whole
world!’ How is that for the impression you
have made on a seven year old? The time you
take listening and encouraging young minds is
priceless. Thank you for every effort you make
every time we visit!”
The next time your
family visits the Zoo,
make sure to check
out the Nature Swap.
Children ages 3 and up
can participate.
By the end of 2013 there were 1,126
registered swappers who had made a
whopping total of 4,296 trades. One
nature swapper’s mom shared how
much her family enjoys this offering:
