2011–12 report to the community
2011–12 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends and Donors, Forty-four years ago, a small group of people who were passionate about making their community a better place created Blue Grass Community Foundation. What do you know about the community? What are the things you would like to see improved in the Bluegrass to make it an even better place?” It all began with a single charitable fund and a few thousand dollars. By June 30, 2011, more than 265 funds with charitable assets of more than $44.7 million would have joined our family of giving. In 2011 our donors gave $3 million to community causes. Those who do not know the Community Foundation might imagine that we simply tell people the best place to spend their charitable dollars or volunteer their time. And, we do have deep expertise in grant making and civic engagement. We also provide the community with valuable tools, such as GoodGiving.net, to help empower and enrich charitable giving. Yet, we don’t tell donors where to give or what causes to support. Rather, we listen. When asked, we provide guidance and options. Then, we listen some more. We are here to serve every potential donor, however large or small, and help them realize their fullest charitable potential. Our goal is to make your charitable giving simple, effective, rewarding and fun. We accomplish this through our focus on one key question: “What’s important to you?” We ask this question of every donor, every nonprofit organization and every board member – anyone with whom we interact. We want to know, “What is important to you? If you want to give back to the place you call home, we encourage you to give us a call. We can help you do everything from organizing and automating your charitable giving to creating a plan that will engage your family and last for generations to come. We look forward to 2013 with great anticipation. Lisa Adkins, J.D. President & CEO WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF A SINGLE INDIVIDUAL TO MAKE AN EXPONENTIAL IMPACT… …1 IDEA WITH THE POTENTIAL TO SPARK 10 MORE. BOARD AND STAFF Staff Lisa A. Adkins, J.D. Unlike tax deductions, tax credits are taken off your tax bill dollar for dollar. A gift of $5,000 can eliminate a $1,000 state tax liability. A gift of $50,000 or more can eliminate a $10,000 state tax liability – and can be carried forward for up to five years. However, only $500,000 in tax credit is available this year and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis through June 30, 2012. The Endow Kentucky Tax Credit specifically supports permanent charitable endowments at community foundations, including donor advised charitable funds. You may name and establish your own endowment fund or contribute to an existing one. Marsha Dawson established two endowments at Blue Grass Community Foundation: a donor advised fund dedicated to the memory of her husband, Fenton Dawson, and The Flight 5191 Memorial Preservation Fund to maintain and preserve the memorial to the 49 people who lost their lives in the Comair Flight 5191 disaster. The 17-foot-tall memorial sculpture depicts 49 birds in flight and was dedicated at the UK Arboretum on August 27, 2011, the fifth anniversary of the disaster. “I wanted to help preserve the memorial so that others would always have a peaceful, joyful place to remember their loved ones,” said Ms. Dawson. “I wanted to memorialize my husband who perished in the flight. But I also wanted to make a gift to the community — to neighbors, churches, family and friends — whose outpourings of love and support were so much a part of the healing process for me. I would have chosen to establish an endowment to maintain and preserve the memorial in any case. The tax credit allowed me to give more than I would have been able to otherwise.” THE ENDOW KENTUCKY TAX CREDIT Mrs. Dawson’s application for the tax credit was approved by the Kentucky Department of Revenue. Other donors who wish to contribute to the Flight 5191 Memorial Preservation Fund will also be eligible to apply for the credit. The Endow Kentucky Tax Credit is a limited-time offer. But gifts to an endowment fund at Blue Grass Community Foundation will ensure that the charities you believe in will continue to fulfill their missions forever. To apply for the tax credit, you must file an application for preliminary authorization with the Kentucky Department of (continued) Revenue. Instructions and an application for preliminary approval are available online at http://revenue.ky.gov/endo wedkytaxcredit.htms Contact the Community Foundation to discuss establishing your own endowment fund. Opening a charitable fund is a simple, quick process. There is no set-up fee. A staff of professionals will walk you through every step when you’re ready to get started. They will also be available to walk you through the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit application process. To learn more about Blue Grass Community Foundation and the Endow Kentucky Tax Credit, contact Allison Lankford, Vice President/General Counsel at 859.225.3343 or [email protected]. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
