A few thoughts
from the owners
Who also have
kids in sports
Thank you for considering Gear West! We are passionate about xc skiing and have
worked hard -over 22 years- to create the most exciting xc ski store possible. Our
goal? To offer you and your racer a terrific selection of skis, boots, and poles, a staff
full of wisdom, and ski packages with a lot of value! We want you to understand the
quality of the equipment, the options available, and how we fit skis to meet your
racer’s abilities and your financial needs.
About us? Brian won the xc skiing state meet for Coon Rapids (a very long time ago) and sold skis for Fischer. Jan fell in love
with skiing after college, quit her “real job”, raced skis, triathlon and canoes a lot, and has owned/operated a sports store for
over 35 years. Our job, and everyone who works for Gear West, is to provide you with the best service possible, make you
excited about skiing and happy with your purchases.
Skier parents!
Your student has chosen cross country skiing - what fun! The four ingredients
to a great ski experience are: teammates, snow, coaches, and equipment.
At Gear West we love snow and employ XC ski coaches at our store. We
support all coaches and teams with discounts, but equipment and service
is where we shine. We recognize skiing requires an investment and we take
fitting customers with the right gear seriously.
I can tell you with certainty that the value and fit of equipment purchased
at Gear West is the best you can find anywhere. Gear West, Jan, Brian and
staff guarantee you will be educated about the equipment that best fits the
needs of your student – classic or skate, beginner or advanced. Be excited
that your son or daughter is interested in xc skiing. It is an amazing sport
that develops tenacity, love for the outdoors, coordination, fitness and lasting
friendships. Thank you for your trust.
Sincerely, Jan Guenther

Keeping your athlete warm and dry.
Dressing in breathable layers is crucial to staying warm. XC ski
racers work hard in cold weather and they perspire. To stay
comfortable it is essential to transfer sweat from the body while
blocking wind and cold. We suggest a three-layer system: a
quality, moisture-wicking base layer, a thin fleece mid-layer and
a wind-stopping outer-layer.
BASE LAYER (Top and bottom) Transfers moisture away from
the skin and holds the warm air generated from exercise next to
the skin. GW carries Craft, Swix, Bjorn Dahlie for tops, bottoms
and wind briefs.
MID LAYER (Top) Insulated layer for cold days and/or easier workouts. Accomplished
best with light fleece, vest. Often a second base layer works well in trapping warm air.
OUTER LAYER (Top and bottom) Blocks wind while wicking moisture away from the
body. Outer layers also add warmth. Jackets and pants are usually designed with a
wind-block front and breathable back.
Crucial accessories include: windbriefs (boys), mitts or lobster gloves, liners, hats,
overboots, wool socks, Warm Skin/Dermatone (for face), goggles and drink holder.
