Joe attended the Southfield High School, where he excelled in football and track prior to his graduation in 1963. Fulfilling a long dream, he then matriculated at the University of Michigan, where he obtained his BS degree in 1967 when he was admitted into the U of M School of Medicine, from which he graduated in 1971. His stay at the U of M matured a long love for the University, and he became a champion of anything that had to do with the U of M, particularly their football triumphs. Later, as a surgeon, Joe was available seven days a week except on Saturdays during the U of M football season, when he would always be in attendance at the home games and often in attendance at the away games. The editor never failed to tease Joe whenever Notre Dame beat U of M on the gridiron. Following his medical school training, Dr. Talbert decided to do his general surgical residency at the University of Wisconsin, where he did his surgical internship and first year of his surgical residency. At the end of his first year of general surgery, he obeyed the call from Uncle Sam and entered into the United States Air Force from 1973 through 1975, where he served with the rank of Major. Following his stint with the military, Joe came back to his beloved University of Michigan, where he completed his general surgical residency at the affiliated St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then went back to the University of Wisconsin to complete his cardiothoracic surgical residency from 1979-1981. During his early surgical training, Joe had the good luck to meet Ms. Linda Syptak and the good sense to invite her to be his lifetime partner. Joe and Linda were married for 43 years and had two children, Gerald Cannon and Caroline Laura. Following the completion of his cardiothoracic training, Dr. Talbert became a lifelong Southeast Michiganian. He joined the WSU clinical faculty in 1982, became part of the Veterans Administration Hospital when it was still in Allen Park in 1983, and served for many years as the WSU director of the cardiac surgical ICU and the Harper Hospital surgical ICU. He became a busy practicing surgeon both in the private community and in the WSU/DMC complexes. Joe successfully completed all of his board certifications in general and thoracic surgery and was a member of all of the local and regional surgical (Continued page 8) Page 8 JULY 2014 AN ERUDITE GENTLEMAN MOVES ON, cont. societies. During his early academic years, he was productive in the scientific domain, where he worked with Dr. Robert Wilson (WSUGS/TS 1963/65) and Dr. Agustin Arbulu (WSUGS/TS 1961/65). Most of his publications dealt with thoracic aortic trauma, cardiopulmonary bypass for the treatment of hypothermia, and myocardial contusion. Dr. Talbert left us on April 14, 2014, due to the complications of West Nile Virus meningitis and encephalitis. He will be missed by Linda, Gerald, and Caroline, their many kinfolk, and a huge number of friends and colleagues that respected Joe for his wonderful surgical skills and his great knowledge of the classics, history, art, and the history of political intrigue. His friends will always remember him as one who had extraordinary knowledge in many different areas but also one who would correct a colleague’s ignorance of history in a very gentle and circumspect manner so that the ignorant colleague did not feel insulted. It seemed to many that one could never raise a topic about which Joe was not quite familiar. Dr. Joe Gannon Talbert was truly a gentleman and a scholar. Messages of condolence to the Talbert family can be delivered at [email protected]. (Part II) Dr. William Cox, the westernmost radiologist in North American, introduced to you in the June Monthly Email Report, describes to you his visit to the personal physician of the Dalai Lama in 1992. Dharamsala, India February 1992. Dr. Yeshi Dhonden and Dr. Tenzin Choedrak The “Great Yeshi Dhonden” is how I’ve heard him described. A simple and humble maroon-robed monk, he is the former personal physician to the Dalai Lama and the senior and most famous practitioner of traditional Tibetan medicine. He now runs a busy private clinic in Dharamsala, India—home to the Tibetan government-in-exile and a large Tibetan refugee population. I would be spending the morning at his side, observing. Tibetan medicine is based on the Buddhist Medicine Tree and its associated Tantras. It is vastly complex, yet its basis is simple. There are three humours that permeate all sentient beings; bile, wind, and phlegm. When they are in balance, we are healthy. Yet, the slightest imbalance may account for the tens of thousands of diseases documented in the Tantras. The practitioner diagnoses the disease and prescribes the appropriate treatment to restore the balance, thereby restoring health. Tibet’s first medical school was built in the 8th century, but Tibetan medicine was almost certainly long established by then. The premier diagnostic tool is pulse diagnosis. Studied for a solid year, it is said to take 10 years to master. The middle three fingers are placed on the patient’s radial artery at the wrist. Each presses down with a slightly different pressure. The inside and outside of each finger senses, or “reads,” a different organ system (a division into hollow and solid organs does not necessarily correspond to Western medicine’s understanding of anatomy). The combination of the humours is also read. There are hot and cold illnesses, seasonal pulses… Next, the urine is examined and smelled. It is whisked and the way it bubbles or froths is noted. Finally, a prescription is written in Tibetan and the patient is sent to the pharmacy. Dr. Dhonden saw dozens of patients that morning. There was very little doctor-patient discussion. It was as if Dr. Dhonden already knew why they came to see him and what to look for. Pulse diagnosis and urine examination seemed to be the mainstay, followed by more particular techniques that might be necessary. I watched him do facial acupuncture on a young monk. Yeshi Dhonden has been to the big medical centers on the American East Coast and examined patients. His diagnostic abilities stunned University hospital doctors! His descriptions, translated from Tibetan, left his American medical colleagues no doubt they were talking about the same disease or underlying congenital anatomic defect. (Continued page 11) Page 10 JULY 2014 Greetings from a Radiologist Who Acts Like a Surgeon! (Story II) Tibetan medicine is mostly herbal, and I followed the last patient of the morning over to the pharmacy where it was prepared and distributed. The raw materials were mostly gathered from the surrounding valleys and hillsides and assembled into the final product in this building. A strong but wonderfully pleasant herbal scent filled the air, like potpourri, and I wondered if it might be acting as a health-enhancing tonic on the workers who inhaled it all day. In one of Dr. Dhonden’s final exams as a student, he was taken into a large tent near the medical institute in Tibet where he trained. Long tables were filled with roots, leaves, and herbs of every kind. Blindfolded, he identified every one correctly by taste, smell, and touch! William Cox, M.D., meets with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India (February 1992) Early the following afternoon, I showed up at the office/apartment of Dr. Tenzin Choedrak—the personal physician to his holiness, the Dalia Lama. This small, gentle man was imprisoned and brutally tortured by the Chinese Communists in Tibet before he was able to make his way to India. His smile filled the room with compassion as he took my hand in his, holding it and rubbing it gently until it reached the same temperature as his. His skin was the softest I ever felt. A Nepali woman knelt beside us to translate, but I had no medical issues and said nothing. I just wanted to experience having my pulse taken… and who better than the Dalai Lama’s personal physician to do it! Dr. Choedrak pressed his three fingers against my radial artery. After what seemed like several long minutes of concentration, he removed his hand, looked at me and, through the translator, announced that I was suffering from constipation and maybe a mild gastritis. I was stunned! While virtually every westerner travelling in India gets diarrhea on one or more occasions, I’d been having the opposite problem. My bowels had been stopped up for several days, despite indulging in street food, and I was beginning to get concerned. As for the gastritis, it was almost 2 p.m. and my stomach was quietly rumbling with hunger. I went to the pharmacy of the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute and filled the prescription Dr. Choedrak gave me. A final word to the wise: Don’t mix Tibetan medicine, Larium (a vicious anti-malarial known to cause hair loss and exacerbate psychotic episodes) and strong, dark Indian rum! It caused me to miss rounds at Delek Hospital the following morning! Detroit, Michigan 48201 Page 12 Dear WSSS Alumni & Friends: The time has arrived for me to provide a summary of the WSSS events from 2013 and also notice of events for the upcoming year. But first I would like to say thank you. It has been my honor to have served over the past year, which I have to say has been successful. Membership is good and finances have been steady. While these are good things and the balance is at or near “equilibrium,” we must be vigilant to encourage new membership at both the annual and lifetime levels. The last annual meeting of the WSSS was held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, DC in conjunction with the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. The Wayne State Department of Surgery Alumni Reception was very well attended and the WSSS Annual Dinner Meeting immediately followed it. There was one newly elected board member announced at the dinner. Dr. Scott Davidson was elected to take over the Member-at-Large position from Dr. Daniel Sullivan who completed his three-year term. I would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Sullivan for his service and commitment the to WSSS. Your current Board of Directors includes Dr. Donald Weaver, Chairman of the Department; Dr. Mark Herman, President; Dr. Randy Smith, President-Elect; Dr. Christopher Dente, Secretary-Treasurer; Dr. Joseph Sferra, Member-at-Large; Dr. Scott Davidson, Member-at-Large; and Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, Member-at-Large. Three of these members will be completing their terms of office this year. Ballots are enclosed for the election of a new President-Elect, Secretary-Treasurer, and Member-at-Large. The WSSS was honored to host William Schecter, M.D., F.A.C.S. as it Annual Lecturer. He is a trauma surgeon who has spent most of his career at UCSF where he is considered a master surgeon. He has also devoted much of his time working to improve access to surgical care for the poor and impoverished. The lecture was at Harper Hospital on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Dr. Schecter gave a truly remarkable, introspective, and captivating talk entitled "Meditation on Mortality: Lessons from a Life in Surgery." It is available in print (J Trauma 2011 Feb;70(2):340-4) and is highly recommended reading for residents and seasoned surgeons alike. He followed his WSSS appearance with lectures at the Detroit Trauma Symposium on November 14-15, 2013 at the MGM Grand Casino as well as a dinner talk at the Academy of Surgery of Detroit on Thursday, November 14. Detroit kept him very busy. The WSSS and the Trauma Symposium continue to enjoy a close relationship. This past year 28 of our members attended the meeting along with 16 of the current Wayne State surgery residents. A reminder that the registration fee is waived for our members. This continues to be an outstanding venue for CME, networking, our simply catching up with colleagues. The dates for the 2014 Symposium are Thursday, November 6 and Friday, November 7. Our next annual dinner meeting is expected to take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in conjunction with ACS Clinical Congress in San Francisco. Please watch for an update to confirm the meting location and time. The WSSS Annual Lecture is expected to take place in November again at Harper Hospital. Details will be provided once a speaker is confirmed. Lastly, the WSSS annual dues remain at $200 per year, which includes the reception/dinner at the American College of Surgeons meeting and the registration fee for the Annual Trauma Symposium. Your dues also provide support for the annual lecturer, resident research, and resident/student travel to the ACS. A dues increase has recently been considered in order to help fund the increasing cost of resident travel. Thanks in large part to a generous donation directed for the residents from Dr. Jason Bodzin, this dues increase is not currently necessary. Continued support of the WSSS by its members and the ability to grow its membership are critical to our long-term success. Dr. Lucas also has a fund known as “An Operation a Year” which is an optional contribution (in addition to dues) that will help our chief residents attend the ACS Meeting. Alternatively, you may sign up as a Charter/Life Member with a payment of $10,000 or a commitment of $1,000 per year for ten years. A reminder that all new surgical residency and fellowship graduates are offered WSSS membership upon graduation, and the dues are waived for two years following completion of training. I would like to encourage those of you who are now beyond this two-year window to retain your membership. Finally, on behalf of the WSSS, I again want to thank Dr. Lucas for his hard work and dedication. If you happen to be missing his newsletters, please email him at [email protected] to get on his mailing list or simply update your current whereabouts. Warm regards, Mark A. WSSS was designed to create closer contact between the current faculty and residents with the former resident members in order to create a living family of all of the WSU Department of Surgery. The WSSS also supports department activities. Charter/Life Membership in the WSSS is attained by a donation of $1,000 per year for ten years or $10,000 prior to ten years. Annual membership is attained by a donation of $200 per year. WSSS supports a visiting lecturer each fall and co-sponsors the annual reception of the department at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Lisa Flynn (WSU/GS/VS1993/98/99) passed the baton of presidency to Dr. Mark A. Herman (WSU/GS 1994/2001) at the WSSS Gathering during the American College of Surgeons meeting in October 2012. Members of the WSSS are listed on the next page. Dr. Herman hopes that all former residents will become lifetime members of the WSSS and participate in the annual sponsored lectureship and the annual reunion at the American College of Surgeons meeting.
