About 1,000 Asian pilgrims
were evacuated early yesterday from their hotel in
the Saudi city of Mecca, hit
by a fire that injured two
people, the civil defence
agency said.
Firefighters “rescued two
pilgrims who were hurt”
by the fire in an eighthfloor room of the unnamed
hotel, the agency said.
More than one million
faithful have already
arrived in Mecca for this
year’s hajj, which begins
Tuesday. The agency also
did not give the nationality of the pilgrims, nor say
what caused the blaze.
The hajj is the world’s biggest annual event. It is one
of the five pillars of Islam.

of game designing, a Bahraini
youngster has created a horror
game that defies all conventional
standards.

Sarhani’s ‘Conscious Heart’ alters
the gameplay by reading the player’s
heart beat rate.
“Using Virtual Reality and
Biofeedback technologies to read
biological responses, the game turns
more scary and challenging as the
player’s heart beat rises,” Al Sarhani
explained. According to him, the
game is the only 3D Virtual Reality
Biofeedback-dependent horror game
that has ever been made.
“The game is likely to give the
players an interesting and unique
experience,” he said.
“The game increases the player’s
awareness of their body’s biological

responses while delivering an
immersive and unique challenging
experience. The more afraid you are,
the scarier it becomes. The game
continuously monitors your heart
rate and adapts accordingly,” he said.
Citing an example, he said, “When
the player is calm, all lights appear
normal. But when you panic, the
lights start to flicker. There are many
more such complex effects in the
game,” he elaborated.
His research on virtual reality and
bio-dependent technologies inspired
him to make the game.
“I am very interested in both the
technologies and I noticed no games
have so far been developed integrating
both of them. And through
discussions and brainstorming, I
developed the idea to what it is right
now,” he commented. To him, the

next step was to conceive his idea
into a game, which he says was no
easy task either.
“I borrowed some equipment from
my University (Bahrain Polytechnic)
and purchased some others. I
used a game engine called Unity
and an IDE (Internal Development
Environment) called Visual Studio
to establish the communication
between the different devices,” he
added.
Al Sarhani believes that his game
will be loved, simply because it is
unique.
“As far as I have researched, no
other games use both Virtual Reality
and Biofeedback technologies
together. The closest I would say is
a game called Nevermind that uses
Biofeedback in a similar manner.
The major differences is that my
game is more immersive with the use
of Virtual Reality,” he said.
He is currently researching
psychology, advanced technology
and other aspects involved in the
game to enhance it.
“The game will serve two types of
people - enthusiastic gamers, who
want to have a new experience and
the other, people who suffer from
stress-related issues, trying to control
their emotions well. It will serve
as a means of entertainment, that
also helps them control the problem
through self-teaching,” he remarked.
Al Sarhani has big plans for the
future, to improve his game and also
to make more such games.

WHO accredits public
health lab MERS virus tests

(BACA) organized a lecture event
last night under the title ‘History
of Hiyeh Be Yeh’ at the Bahrain
Fort museum hall.
The lecture was presented by
researcher Fatima Al Sulaiti, an
expert in Bahraini heritage and
culture. She has also undertaken
a scientific study into the Hiyeh
Be Ye ritual, which is being passed
on through many generations.

in Manama. The trio reportedly

April 3 this year, but they

The 32-year-old defendant

companies, who applied since
the beginning of year 2015.
The applications varied
between new qualification
requests, pre-qualification
requests, renewal and upgrade
requests.

qualification licences were
granted to applicants based
on
their
specialisation

qualification class and degree
are determined upon the
evaluation results.
A number of Ministries
and governmental agencies
adopt the qualification results
and qualified contractors
lists issued by the Ministry
of Works and include them
within the requirements
related to their projects.
The Ministry’s list presently
includes 521 qualification
licences for contracting
companies categorized based
on classes and degrees of
the construction sector, 114
for the roads sector and
147 for the sanitary sector;
varying between local and
international companies.

companies that wish to
participate in the Ministry’s
construction and maintenance
projects in the construction
and building maintenance
sector, the roads and the
sanitary sectors.
The companies are evaluated
technically and financially in

the requirements of each field.
The specifications have
been accredited by the Tender
Board, which also approves
the qualification results.
Al Hawaj explained that
the qualification service
was announced in local
newspapers on an annual
basis, for which companies
needed to fill a form and
attach all requirements before
presenting the application
to the Ministry’s Cost
Engineering Directorate’s
Qualification Group. The
group then studies the
application to ensure it
conforms to all conditions and

The new pipeline is
expected to meet the
growing demand for crude
oil in the future following the
implementation of the Bapco
Modernisation Programme
(BMP).
The length of the new
A/B Pipeline is 115 km, of
which 42 km of the pipeline
is submerged undersea while
73 km runs on land.
Commenting on this
occasion, Bapco’s Chairman
Shaikh Mohammed bin
Khalifa bin Ahmed Al
Khalifa expressed Bapco’s
pride in signing the contract,
hailing its historic value.
He praised the long, close
relationship between Bapco
and Aramco.

been the place to shop in Iran
but despite years of sanctions a
new generation has discovered
a vastly different consumer
experience: blatant, unapologetic
Western-style consumerism.
Instead of meandering
markets echoing with the sound
of haggling, huge shopping malls
boast multiple floors of retail
space, enormous underground
parking lots and children’s play
zones.
Developers have broken
ground on an estimated 400
modern shopping malls across
Iran in recent years -- 65 of them
in Tehran alone.
They have transformed
the shopping habits of many
Iranians, but now an even bigger
change seems on the way after the
country’s nuclear deal with world
powers.
Experts
say
the
expected
lifting
of
sanctions
imposed over
Iran’s disputed
n u c l e a r
programme will
open the door to
a potential retail
bonanza, especially
for
imported
Western goods.
“Iran
has
a
well-educated
population with an
T
unquenched thirst for foreignbranded consumer goods,”
PricewaterhouseCoopers said
in a report earlier this year,
highlighting the buying potential
of the country’s youthful
population.
“People are looking for variety
and want more choices,” said
Mohammad Gholi Yousefi, an
economics professor at Allameh
Tabatabai University in Tehran.
“When the sanctions are
lifted and more investors enter
the market, Iran is expected to
become the commercial centre of
the region,” he said.
Even before the lifting of
sanctions, Iranians have been
embracing shopping centres like
the Palladium Mall in Zaferanieh,
one of Tehran’s most upmarket
neighbourhoods.
‘To another level’
Besides 11 floors of retail space
and 1,000 underground parking
spots it boasts a food court and
restaurant where patrons relax by
gazing at the scenic snow-capped
Alborz mountains to the north
of Tehran.
“Because there are so many
shops, you have more options
and the goods are more up-todate and fashionable,” said Paria
Goudarzi, 19, dressed in a chic
white coat outside Palladium.
“Today, we came to eat at the
food court. You can park your
car comfortably and have great
food,” she said.
“I hope the situation will be
even better after sanctions.”

forward to having

once sanctions
are lifted. “If
sanctions go,
and
more
brands come,
definitely the
shopping
will rise to
another
level here,”
he said.
While
Iran has not
released recent figures
on consumer spending, many

are considered profitable. With
sanctions making investments
in other areas difficult, many of
the country’s biggest investors
including banks have turned to
shopping malls, Yousefi said.
“The banks used to put
people’s investments in housing
projects, but with stagnation in
that sector, they turned to malls
which are still profitable,” he said.
Two Iranian shopping centres
-- one in the central city of Isfahan
and another in the southern city
of Shiraz -- rank among the 10
largest in the world in terms of
sales area, behind giant malls
in China but ahead of those in
Dubai, according to a ranking
published in August by magazine
Business Benchmark Middle East.
The only thing missing has
been the plethora of Western
brands much-desired in the
country of 78 million despite
historic tensions with the West.
Such goods are available but
must be smuggled in through
middlemen in places like Turkey
or Dubai so are sold at vastly
inflated prices.
Iranian businessmen like
Majid Lak -- whose Caspian
Mode Group represents brands
including Turkish apparel-maker
LC Waikiki and Italy’s Benetton
-- see big opportunities if Iran’s
trade barriers come down.
More choice, more support
“Because of the sanctions
there are numerous top fashion

of which are either American or
have a large American market,
that won’t deal with us,” said Lak,
sitting at an elaborate wooden
desk and surrounded by energetic
young aides. “We still want to
connect to the world.”
Saeid Baghayi is a 24-year-old
electronics seller at another major
shopping centre that opened this
year in Tehran called Charsou.
He said the lifting of sanctions
will do more than just lower
prices for electronics. “We
source our products through
the networks we have known
in recent years, some of them
official and some of them not,”
Baghayi said.
But “we really do face
problems,” he added. “Spare parts
get here with a lot of difficulty
and at high prices.”
Shoppers at Charsou, like
24-year-old fashion photographer
Mohammad Metri, said they
were looking forward to having
more choice and better support
for the products they buy.
“I choose this mall for the
variety of products and better
support these big shops provide.
I think after the removal of trade
obstacles, the quality of services
would be even better,” Metri said.

“My comments were part of a much broader conversation

of Project Greenlight which did not make the show,” he

Bulger hail from Southie, a
part of Boston where everyone
knows each other and bonds
run deep. He cares about Bulger
and convinces him to slip the
feds valuable information that
can help make the town almost
crime-free.
Connolly plays a key part in
that he manages the uneasy
link involving the secret deal
between Bulger and the FBI. The
deal is double-edged as Connolly
knows that they are indirectly
making Bulger more powerful
and in a way, doing his dirty work
for him by eliminating his rivals,
legally of course.
Connolly keeps placating his
boss McGuire (Kevin Bacon), who
grudgingly accepts this slightly
dubious witness protection
arrangement. Bulger can do
whatever he likes, but there is
an extent to which Connolly can
protect him. Easier said than
done though, for Bulger gets
progressively bolder with his
activities as his rivals are taken off
the streets.
In his career thus far, Johnny
Depp has essayed a wide variety
of characters ranging from the
sublime to the bizarre, with
consummate ease. However, as
Whitey Bulger, he is in a word,
mesmerizing.
The level of immersion he has
achieved in playing Bulger (aided
in a big way by painstakinglycreated facial prosthetics) is
near-flawless. You’ll forget that
it is Depp who is onscreen. And
Edgerton (recently seen in The
Gift that he starred in, wrote and
directed) just seems to get better
with every consecutive movie
role. Watch it for Johnny Depp
and Joel Edgerton’s masterful
performances.

IS BOMBINGS KILL 14 IN BAGHDAD

The jihadist group said the
attacks were carried out by two
suicide bombers, whom it did
not identify.
Both Tayran and Wathba
squares are in mixed Sunni-Shia
neighbourhoods, and the motive
for the bombings was not clear.
IS frequently targets Iraq’s
majority Shias, whom it
considers heretics, fuelling
sectarian tensions in the
country, and often strikes areas
such as markets and cafes where
crowds gather.
The last major bombing
in Baghdad was more than a
month ago.
On August 15, a car bomb
in a Shia-majority area of north
Baghdad where people gather
to buy and sell vehicles killed 11
people and wounded at least 68.
That blast hit Sadr City, the
same district where a massive
truck bomb ripped through a
wholesale vegetable market just
two days before, killing at least
54 people.
Iraqi forces backed by a
US-led coalition and Iran have
regained significant ground
from IS north of Baghdad, but
much of the country’s west
remains outside government
control.

was ending its partnership with
Red Bull and urged the enginemaker to stay in the sport.

would stop supplying engines
to other teams and would
either run its own outfit or quit

“I was part of that partnership,
we had very successful years
which unfortunately now gets

The new season will be the
ninth edition of the annual
challenge and features eight
rounds, beginning with the
championship-opener

13. The BIC 2,000cc Challenge
is Bahrain’s longest-running
circuit racing championship
and gives racers a chance to

Khalifa (235 points) is the
defending champion and
won last season’s crown in
dominant fashion and will be
going for back-to-back tiles
and a third overall.
Other top competitors
