Hard to believe that 2014 is over, winter is here, and it is already time to think about Spring. 2015 promises to be a great year, with lots of new programs for residents of all ages. This Spring we will be bringing back a program favorite Great Kitchens. Great Kitchens takes us to some of the best restaurants in the area for cooking instruction, recipe sharing, extraordinary sampling and great company! We begin this February with a Valentine menu from La Casa Bianca. Join Chef Paul for a great evening February, enjoy some fabulous food, and leave with great recipes to create your own Valentines Feast. Due to the popularity of Great Kitchens we have add- ed a Wine and Chocolate Pairing to the spring class schedule in March. Who doesn’t want to learn how to pair gourmet chocolate with wine!! Registration for Spring Soccer, Field Hockey, and Softball began January 1st. If you plan to participate please register early. Boys Lacrosse registration started early and ends 1/31/15 for players in grades 3rd-8th. No late registrations will be accepted so register now. Registration for the Boys K-2 Clinic ends 3/1/15. Girls Lacrosse registration will begin soon, look for informational e-mails. Do to the success of the Readington Tennis Team we will be adding a Junior Tennis Team for children ages 8-10 this spring. Look for more CARDIO TENNIS - Adults Days: Tues. 4/14-6/2, 6:45pm-7:45pm Wed. 4/15-6/3, 9:30am-10:30am Location: Pickell Park Cost: $160 8 weeks Take part in one of the country’s newest aerobic fitness trends! Cardio Tennis provides a full body workout by combining, simple body strength activities with a range of tennis skills, all in a fun, social environment. No tennis experience is necessary to take part, simply the desire to stay in shape and have fun on the tennis court. Aerobic Exercise-Core Strength Footwork-Balance & Agility Racquet Skills-Tennis to Music information about the tennis teams on page 5. In addition, we have added a preseason tennis clinic in March for athletes interested in playing on the spring team which begins in April. Registration for the clinic is limited, please register early if you are interested in attending. Summer Rec and Specialty Camp registration will begin March 1st. Check out the Summer Camp preview section on page 7. There are a wide variety of summer camp opportunities. The Readington Recreation Department is always looking for ideas for new recreation programs and services. Students will work using pencil, charcoal, and paints on a variety of fun projects designed to sharpen artistic skills in the areas of drawing, color theory, composition, and painting technique. Students learn the basic terminology of fencing, develop motor skills, reflexes, and coordination necessary to the basic skills of fencing which include: Position, Basic Footwork, Offense, Defense, and Tactics, improve their general physical condition, develop mental discipline, practice good sportsmanship, safe fencing, and learn to apply the rules of fencing. Spring FIELD HOCKEY grades 2-8 Date: April –June Time: Cost: $115, register by 1/31 cost $105 The Spring field hockey league is open for girls from 2nd –8th grade. This is an instructional league, girls will be placed in age/ability groups. We are looking for adult/ high school volunteers to help with this spring league. The emphasis is on safety, fun and learning. All Sports are presented in positive and relaxed environment with an emphasis on participation, interaction, and communication. Soccer Squirts learn the fundamental skills of soccer through a program of structured activities, fun based games, and scrimmages. Each Soccer Squirts session focuses on maximizing participation and learning through a variety of fun games designed to stimulate a child's imagination and develop motor skills. T-Ball Squirts focuses on the fundamental skills of the game; including hitting, throwing, catching and running the bases. Our progressive T-Ball curriculum enables each child to develop their skills, and understanding of the game. Using safe and developmentally appropriate equipment, core components of TBall are learned through a series of fun games and activities designed to reinforce fundamental skills and incorporate game situations. Tennis Squirts Ages 3-5 Date: Wednesday, 4/15-6/3, 8 weeks Time: 4:00-4:50pm Cost: $160 Ages 3-5 Location: Pickell Park Instructor: US Sports SPRING SOCCER Soccer Grades K-5 & 6-12 Day: Saturdays, 4/11-6/13 Location: Summer Road Following the guidelines set out by the US Tennis Association (USTA), children develop their tennis skills using the highly appraised Quickstart Tennis Model. Our program offers a variety of games and activities to promote maximum learning. Rackets provided for Tennis Squirts. Rackets are not provided for older age groups. This program caters to all ability levels from Kindergarten through to 5th grade. Participants learn the fundamentals of soccer through an innovative program of structured, game-related activities and fun based practices.” Great opportunity for athletes to prepare for travel soccer try outs in May. Readington Recreation Page 5 Girls SOFTBALL UMPIRES NEEDED for spring softball games. Anyone wanting to be an umpire ( must be minimum 14 years old) must attend a meeting and training. Girls Softball Coaches K-4th Meeting will be on Thursday, March 12th at the Holland Brook School Cafeteria at 7:00pm. Grades K-8th Dates: Saturday, March 21st professional training Branchburg Sports Complex, Season April 6 - June 13th Cost K-4th register with Readington Rec: $130, register by 1/31 cost $120 Cost 5th-8th register online with Flemington-Raritan: $155, register by 1/31 cost $135 REGISTRATION WILL END EARLY ON 2/28 Evaluations 3rd/4th grade: Saturday March 21st at preseason training NEW Grades 5th-12th grade will play on Flemington-Raritan Softball League Teams. You must register and pay online at www.frgsl.org. Games and practice will be in Flemington. Grades 3 & 4 will play on a Readington Team with the Flemington-Raritan Softball League. Practices will be in Readington and games will alternate between Readington & Flemington fields. TENNIS NEW Grades K-2 will play on a Readington Team with Branchburg. Practices are in Readington games alternate between Readington & Branchburg fields. PRESEASON TEAM TENNIS - Ages 10-14 Dates: Wednesdays, 3/18-4/8 - 4 weeks Location: Pickell Park Cost: $120, limited space Time: 5:00pm-6:30pm or 6:30pm-8:00pm Interested in being part of the Readington Tennis Team? Take part in our pre season tennis clinics. These sessions are designed to knock the rust off and get playing before the season begins! You will meet new players, compete in inner squad matches and work on the technical and tactical aspects to elevate your game. For all players interested in trying out for the tennis team that do not attend these sessions there will be a brief tryout Wednesday March 25th from 8:00-8:30pm. With weekly instruction from a USPTA certified coach players will work towards refining key skills such as stroke mechanics, footwork, shot placement and decision making, in an effort to enhance performance at a competitive level. The main focus of the class is developing basic shot techniques and skills. Time will also be dedicated to developing the children’s ability to participate in full match play. Time will also be dedicated to All Participants will receive expert instruction, thorough individual evaluation, and an team shirt to wear during match play. Participants will be prepared to enter local tournaments and competitions and be provided with a schedule of events. The coach will provide guidance for players when deciding which level of play is appropriate. TEAM TRY OUTS are scheduled for inter- ested students who are not attending the preseason clinic on Wednesday March 25th from 8:00-8:30PM. Preregistration for try outs is required. Readington Recreation Page 6 ADULT TENNIS ages 15+ Location: Pickell Park Cost: $160 8 weeks Date: Sat. 4/11-6/6 , no class 5/23 Beginners Level I 9:00am-10:00am Advanced Beginners Level II 10:00-11:00am Wed. 4/15-6/3 10:30am-11:30 Instructors: Wed– US Sports/Sat - Firefly Level I: For students with limited or no experience playing tennis. Tennis instruction include proper grips, footwork and conventional techniques for groundstrokes, net play and serves will be introduced., basic court positioning and how to keep the score. Level II: For students with some formal tennis training in the past or successfully played regular games & matches. You should be able to hit most of your groundstrokes into the opposite court, know how to volley, but may struggle making serves into the proper service box. Less time will be spent introducing basic stroke mechanics than the beginner class. Instead your core technique flaws will be detected and corrected while drilling from all positions on the court. The class will emphasize developing consistency while having to move shots and in hitting stoke combinations. FRIDAY NIGHT BASKETBALL Grades 4-8 Day: Fridays, 4/17-6/12 8 weeks—no class 6/5 Location: K-3rd Whitehouse School Cost $145 Grades 4th-8th Readington Middle School Cost $175 Times: Whitehouse I 6:00-7:00 or II 7:00-8:00pm Readington Middle I 6:00-7:30pm or II 7:30-9:00pm Trainers: US Sports Ideal for children who want to learn improve their basketball skills in a low pressure, fun environment and a great night off for mom & dad. The main focus Friday Night Basketball is to develop a well rounded understanding of the game through exciting games and drills. Professional Coaches will teach the basic techniques of dribbling, passing, shooting and defense through a series of inclusive group activities. Each week the last hour will be devoted to small sided, game realistic scrimmages, allowing each player the chance to showcase newly learned kills during structured team play. STREET for DECORATED HOMES OR BUSINESS Parade Volunteers FOR We are looking for volunteers too march in the parade– scouts Any building or home on Main Street can decorate or clubs, veterans, etc. bring their business or home and your classic cars, convertibles enter a contest to win a VIP and create your own floats. Volunteers are also need to help dinner for two from Chef Paul of La Casa Bianca for best decorated residence/ business. The judging will be done buy Stanton Holly Trail on Sunday May 26th. CAMERA, ACTION, SMILE Anyone interested in taking pictures at the parade and would like to share them with the township and win a gift certificate for best picture from Falcone’s Pizzeria & Catering of Whitehouse Station.
