Oregon Zoo Foundation Annual Report 2014-2015 Your support makes a HUGE difference As someone who adores elephants and revels in the opportunity to visit lively Lily, gentle Chendra and the rest of the elephant family at our zoo, I Kim Overhage am filled with equal parts excitement, pride and hope as I see the new Elephant Lands habitat taking shape. Throughout our three decades in Oregon, our family has loved learning together at the zoo. Over time, we have watched Packy become an elder statesman, Rose-Tu and Shine become matriarchs and now a new generation flourishing within the herd. Thinking of the joy and inspiration the zoo has brought to our family, I am thrilled about the amazing experiences Elephant Lands will offer to both our elephants and the many visitors observing them. I am enormously grateful that everyone has come together to make Elephant Lands a reality, from the voters who heartily supported the zoo bond measure to Oregon Zoo Foundation donors, who stepped up to provide the additional funds which make this home truly exceptional. All told, the foundation’s Campaign for Elephants raised $5.3 million, which has been used to enhance the habitat and support conservation, education and animal welfare—what a fantastic sign of our shared commitment to these amazing animals! learning about the crisis facing wild elephants will surely spark an interest in wildlife for countless guests. I can already imagine the dinner table conversations that will follow family visits to Elephant Lands, as budding conservationists wonder how they can make a difference for elephants. Knowing that Elephant Lands is going to inspire and educate millions of visitors gives me a great deal of hope for the future. Seeing the elephants thriving in their new home at the zoo and Kim Overhage This is an extraordinary time to be a part of the zoo community, and I offer thanks to all who support the Oregon Zoo. With your help, we provided $53,427 for international conservation efforts this year, protecting elephants, leopards, rhinos and other vulnerable species. Since 2000, the Oregon Zoo Foundation has committed $1.68 million to support the Zoo Animal Presenters and Urban Nature Overnights programs. of the zoo’s operating budget came from the foundation this year. to the Oregon Zoo this year. You helped us contribute $31,918 Around 7.5% 50 California condor chicks have hatched at the Oregon Zoo’s offsite breeding facility since it was built in 2003 with donor support. Fewer than 2,000 Borneo pygmy elephants remain in the wild. Your gifts made it possible for us to join the fight to save these amazing animals, as we work alongside partners from Woodland Park Zoo, World Wildlife Fund and others. ZAP participants are Because of our generous supporters, 37% 27 teens gained leadership skills and confidence serving as conservation educators this year through paid internships in the Zoo Animal Presenters (ZAP) program. Since 1999, our community has helped fund ZAP internships for 181 teens To date, from around the Portland metro area. This year 9,300 low-income children and adults learned about animals and their habitats from presentations led by ZAP interns. more likely to graduate high school than the average Portland student, despite the fact that many ZAP teens are first in their family to earn a diploma. 3 Sophie Devereux and Hazel Nye .: Youth philanthropists :. Girls Inc., an organization devoted to empowering girls, participates in a program called CommuniCARE that is designed to teach youth about philanthropy. Each year, a team of Girls Inc. girls are tasked with identifying an issue in the community that they are concerned about and raising funds to support organizations working toward that issue. The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation matches up to $15 for every dollar raised. The girls then grant the funds to worthy organizations through an application process that they direct. The 2014 CommuniCARE team donated to the Campaign for Elephants. Why did you pick the Oregon Zoo? Hazel: I love elephants, and I want to see them happy and healthy. I was happy to hear how the new Elephant Lands habitat would contribute to the elephants’ wellbeing. Sophie: I wanted to support the adorable animals, and our group found a common interest in the zoo. The lion is my favorite animal because it is one of the largest and most intimidating. How did you raise money? Hazel: We raised $1,000 by making and selling note cards and duct tape checkbook holders and wallets. With the CARE Foundation match, we raised just over $10,000 total. What did you take away from your experience? Sophie: I learned more about society, like how different groups work together to meet different people’s needs, and I learned more about different groups within our society. “I was happy to hear how the new Elephant Lands habitat would contribute to the elephants’ wellbeing.” How did you choose the non-profits that you wanted to support? Hazel: During our first meeting we decided on our mission statement: “To help women, children and animals to be happy, successful, active and healthy.” Then we developed a list of questions for non-profits that we thought might be interested in applying for funds. Sophie: After we picked our finalists, we went on site visits to find out more about the organizations and how they would use the funds. I really enjoyed meeting all of the great people who work at non-profits, and I enjoyed exploring places that I had never been before. 4 Recognizing our Campaign for Elephants donors In September 2012, the Oregon Zoo Foundation launched a $3 million campaign to support Elephant Lands and the zoo’s vision of providing the best for our elephants. Funding supports educational interpretives, technology and features to enhance the habitat and inspire our community to care about the natural world. Thanks to the generous support of community members and organizations, the campaign surpassed its goal and raised a total of $5.35 million. Yost Neil and Jan Uyemura Jamie and Derek Zolezzi Judith Post .: Volunteer and workplace giving participant :. How long have you been supporting the Oregon Zoo? I first joined as a member in 1984, the year I moved to the Portland area. I began volunteering at the zoo in 1986 and haven’t stopped! Where do you work and why do you choose to give through your employee-giving program? I work for Standard Insurance Company. I wait until the fall each year to donate to the Oregon Zoo Foundation, knowing that my donation will be doubled and go twice as far! I love working for a company that’s so committed to and invested in supporting charitable organizations. What do you love about the Oregon Zoo? I love the level of care and compassion all the staff and volunteers show for our animal ambassadors. My hat is off to those who work with our geriatric animals. Why is it important to you to support the zoo? Our zoo does so much in the way of research, education and conservation. It can only continue with the support of those who care. What do you wish other people knew about the zoo? What a jewel of a resource it is! Come up to walk for your heart, and you’ll lose your heart to our animals and the beauty of our grounds. What would you say to someone considering making a gift or volunteering at the zoo? Do both! The gift will bring you the knowledge that you’ve made a monetary contribution to the Oregon Zoo’s accomplishments. If you’re still working, be sure to check with your employer about matching your gift. Volunteering lets you grow and share your passion for conservation and wildlife—and even sneak some education in when you’re spending time with the public! Both the gifts of money and of time are worthwhile and rewarding. Matching Gift Companies for fiscal year 2015 Adidas CNA Foundation Independent Actuaries, Inc. How did you first become connected with the Oregon Zoo? What are some other ways you have been involved in the zoo? The Oregon Zoo became a big part of my life when I worked at the zoo’s railway station as a teenager. I remember talking to my friend, who was stationed at the other end of the line, via the walkie-talkies and announcing departures on the public address system. I would tease teenage couples parked in their cars and tell them to come into the zoo for a ride. During those two years, I came to know and appreciate the zoo staff. This connection ignited my lifelong love of the zoo. Serving on the zoo’s Board of Trustees in the late 1980’s, I helped raise funds to bring the black rhino Pete to the zoo. Pete passed away in 2012, but I’m very excited about the arrival of Ruka from the St. Louis Zoo. I am hopeful that Ruka and Zuri will help boost the numbers of their highly endangered species. By making a planned gift to the zoo, you are leaving a legacy of support. Why was a planned gift a good choice for you? I became the first member of our Wildlife Legacy Society in 1990 by naming the zoo in my will and as a beneficiary of my retirement plan. As a former estate planning professional, I had helped my clients make charitable gifts to organizations that reflected their values and honored their memories. By joining the Wildlife Legacy Society, I was thrilled to be able to practice what I preached. Why are you inspired to support the zoo? A love of animals and a concern for the future of endangered species, like the rhino, have inspired me to designate my gift to the newly created animal welfare endowment fund. I am reassured to know that the fund will support the zoo’s animal welfare programs in perpetuity and help protect against the inevitable fluctuations that come with public funding. Wildlife Legacy Society The Oregon Zoo Foundation created the Wildlife Legacy Society to recognize and honor individuals who have provided future support of the zoo through their estate plans. When did you first become interested in zoos and particularly the Oregon Zoo? As a child in Kansas, I went to the zoo a few times. I moved to Oregon when I was twelve, in 1930. I was always interested in the zoo. I believe I joined around 1990. What is your favorite animal in the zoo? Well, elephants of course. I love it all. Also the cats, lions, tigers, birds and the apes. I really like the aviaries. Do you have a favorite area or exhibit? Though I haven’t been to the zoo in several years, the last time I was there I really liked the Predators of the Serengeti. What are your other interests or hobbies? I studied English and journalism and, for many years I taught at Lincoln and Cleveland High Schools. For the last four or five years, I have been volunteering with the SMART program, helping kids become stronger readers. This year, I have two kindergartners. I also love the symphony and have been a member since 1947. What do you wish other people knew about the zoo? The work they do protecting the animals. It is very valuable to society. It is important to human life as well as animal life. Money well spent. Bringing the classroom outside teaches students to become lifelong stewards of the environment. By supporting the Oregon Zoo’s education programs, you are helping expand opportunities to inspire future conservation leaders Donate today: 10 oregonzoo.org/support Sharon Downey .: Volunteer and donor :. When did you first become interested in volunteering for the Oregon Zoo? I started volunteering in 1989, before I retired. My children were grown, and I was looking for a way to be involved with the community. I saw a presentation about the zoo and volunteering and thought it was interesting. Since then, I’ve done everything from horticulture to manning the information booth. However, I found my niche with Senior ZooMobile, bringing the zoo to retirement communities for over 17 years. In total, I’ve logged more than 5,000 hours of service. What do you enjoy about being a volunteer? I love the projects, but even more so, I love the people. I meet so many neat and interesting visitors and fellow volunteers. I feel like I’m expanding my horizon by engaging with so many community members. “My children were grown, and I was looking for a way to be involved with the community.” Tell us about a fond memory at the zoo. When my father passed away, I wanted to help the elderly, so I signed up to volunteer with the Senior ZooMobile. On occasion, I meet retirees who volunteered for the zoo decades ago. We share stories, and it brings them good memories. It’s been very rewarding. What animal is a favorite? I love the cat family. I went to Africa with fellow ZooGuides long ago and got to see the big cats. It was an amazing experience we shared together. Your fellow volunteers become extended family. Why is it important to you to support the zoo? For me it’s a family value. Growing up, my father owned his own business. Even so, he gave back to the community and taught our family the importance of it. Whether it’s volunteering or giving money, I’m just doing my duty. Tell us about the special way you support the zoo. Well, my former employer—I’m retired now—matches my volunteer hours. I learned about it through the human resources department. It’s quite easy: I go online and submit my hours and the zoo receives a donation. It’s great that they provide the service for retirees. It’s a win-win for everyone. And, it’s important to me that businesses support their community. Oregon Zoo volunteers by the numbers The Oregon Zoo is a community of animals, staff and volunteers. Volunteers work all over the zoo and beyond, from helping guests have a great visit to giving offsite presentations. 106,123 hours zoo volunteers contributed in 2015 1,678 vounteers at the Oregon Zoo this year 70+ years range in ages between youth and adult volunteers 11 12 Dan McCarthy & Lisi Belz-McCarthy .: Members for 20+ years :. When did you first become interested in the Oregon Zoo? Lisi: We’ve been members since the 80’s, before we had children. Dan has been coming to the zoo since he was two—so that’s almost fifty years! Dan: I have happy memories of being at zoo camps and as a junior zookeeper for a week, working with the Birds of Prey. What do you enjoy about being a member? Dan: Access to the zoo! It’s a great place for kids and an amazing venue for adults, especially with concerts and special events throughout the year. What do you love about the Oregon Zoo? Lisi: Our zoo is always growing. We’ve seen a lot of zoos, and we’re proud of ours. Our children have grown up at the zoo. Now 11 and 17, they read Zootracks and let us know what’s going on at the zoo! It has helped shape a deep love for animals, especially in our oldest, who now raises chickens, ducks and turkeys. Why is it important to you to support the zoo? Dan: Conservation, education and the work with endangered species. The zoo’s programs are worldwide and making an incredible difference. Lisi: I do it for the love of animals! The Oregon Zoo is doing the best job of taking care of the animals, and you can see that. And, the work that you don’t see— such as the science, nutrition and research—is making a difference for wildlife. Dan: We need our community to provide support to help the zoo do more of this work—it’s important. What do you wish other people knew about the zoo? Lisi: You don’t have to have kids to come and enjoy the zoo—there’s something here for everyone. Dan: Not only that, but it’s situated in one of the most beautiful green spaces in the city. It’s centrally located and accessible. Lisi: It’s truly a gem everyone should experience and support. What is your favorite memory at the Oregon Zoo? Dan: In 1995, we were married at the zoo in front of the old elephant barn. Packy was there—it was incredible! Lisi: We wanted to get married in a place that was special and represented Portland—and we wanted our out-of-town guests to experience it. 12 Portland General Electric .: Longtime corporate partner :. Portland General Electric, the number one provider of renewable energy in the country, has been supporting the Oregon Zoo since 1986. Rachel DeRosia from PGE discussed this decades-long partnership. How long has PGE been supporting the Oregon Zoo? What are some other ways that PGE has supported the Oregon Zoo? For almost 30 years, PGE has been sponsoring the Wildlife Live show. The summer program has inspired hundreds of thousands of zoo visitors to care more about wildlife. In 1996, PGE helped build the zoo’s energy-efficient and environmentally friendly mews, where the birds of the show used to be housed. PGE also made improvements to the HVAC system in the Penguinarium. PGE also contributed to the Predators of the Serengeti exhibit, home to the zoo’s caracal family. What areas of the Oregon Zoo are you most devoted to? PGE sponsors Wildlife Live every year because we care about birds. Our avian plan helps protect birds near electrical equipment. PGE bucket trucks have been used to help save eagle nests.
