The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex offers another rare thrill, an 850’ luge run. Built by Olympians, available for mortals to try. Or, try the fiberglass summer luge, the only wheeled luge in North America. 4 Muskegon County Visitors Guide 2016 Our History is Deep As one of the deepest ports in the Great Lakes, maritime attractions are a must see. Visit a lighthouse or tour the USS LST 393 Veterans Museum, USS Silversides Submarine Museum, or the S.S. Milwaukee Clipper. Tour Muskegon Lake or enjoy a dinner cruise aboard the Port City Princess. Reflect on a time when Muskegon was known as the “Lumber Queen of the World.” Lumber Baron Charles Hackley’s legacy includes the renowned Muskegon Museum of Art, historic Hackley Park, the Hackley & Hume Historic Site, and so much more. The Muskegon Heritage Museum will walk you through our industrial past. The Lakeshore Museum Center traces the area’s history from when mastodons roamed the area. 2015 marked the opening of the new Michigan’s Heritage Park in Whitehall, where visitors can experience 10,000 years of Michigan history on a live tour through a natural woodland area. Interact in a wigwam, talk to a fur trader or lumberjack, and churn butter in a settler’s cabin. attractions play, explore, experience, learn location & contact info. 11,000-acre home to 256 species of birds 8301 White Dr., Muskegon 231-724-3440 www.co.muskegon.mi.us/wastewater The Blockhouse Historic fort replica overlooking Lake Michigan Muskegon State Park 3560 Memorial Dr., Muskegon 231-744-3480 Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Offering summer outdoor performances on Little Blue Lake 300 E. Curtis The North American Indian May 11 – September 10, 2017 Next year, on May 11, 2017, the Muskegon Museum of Art will open Edward S. Curtis: The North American Indian, bringing to life this compelling story of artistry, scholarship, perseverance and groundbreaking accomplishment. In 1904 Edward S. Curtis had it all. A world-renowned celebrity photographer with a lifestyle and income to match, Curtis threw it all away to pursue a 30-year obsession that nearly destroyed him. In the end, he lost his wealth, fame, family and health but left behind what is considered the greatest photographic and ethnographic achievement in history: The North American Indian. With the backing of J.P. Morgan and Theodore Roosevelt, Curtis began his bold and fearless effort to document, in photographs and writing, the rich culture of the North American Indian, a people whose time and customs he believed were coming to an end. 42 Muskegon County Visitors Guide 2016 The result was the monumental 20-volume series, The North American Indian, of which just over 220 sets were ever produced. These sets included 724 oversized formal photogravures (photographs) that are the most celebrated images of Native Americans ever created. The Muskegon Museum of Art has in its collection the 70th edition of The North American Indian acquired through original subscription from 1907 through 1930. The complete collection of portfolio images has never been exhibited in their entirety…until now. Visitors will be immersed in the story of Edward Curtis’s remarkable achievement in art and ethnography while having the opportunity to experience the entire collection of Curtis’s remarkable portfolio images of Native American life. Also included in the exhibition will be the bound books, the portfolio cases, and other important historic and related artifacts and documents. Kyle Buck fish no salt, no sharks! by Captain Kyle Buck, Great Lakes Guide Service Muskegon County offers a premier destination for freshwater fishing surrounded by waterways including Lake Michigan, inland lakes, streams, and the world-renowned Muskegon River for year-round fishing action. Have you ever wanted to do battle with a king salmon or a high-flying steelhead? Choose a fishing charter on Lake Michigan, where the season runs from April through October! The Port of Muskegon offers king salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, brown trout, and lake trout fishing. Novices to seasoned anglers will enjoy the sun and waves while the crew does the work, until the poles bend and it’s your turn to reel in the fish! Several Muskegon-area restaurants will prepare your fresh catch as soon as you get off the boat (fish must be caught on a licensed charter). Bring in your cleaned fish and the restaurants will cook your catch to your liking and serve it family style. Muskegon County’s most famous river is its namesake, the Muskegon. The “Mighty Mo,” is a scenic tailwater fishery, one of the best fish factories in the Midwest for steelhead, trout or salmon. Every year the Muskegon River has huge runs of migratory chinook “king” salmon, steelhead “rainbow” trout, and brown trout from Lake Michigan, as the fish return to the river to spawn and reproduce. Large resident brown and rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and walleye are also numerous in the Muskegon River. Fish from the bank or hire a guide to take you to the hotspots. Are bass, walleye or pike more your style? Muskegon County has 57 inland lakes offering exceptional opportunities for these gamefish and smaller panfish. Many lakes offer public boat launches and there are plenty of areas to fish from shore. Muskegon and White Lake have become a premier destination for bass and walleye tournaments. In 2013, Muskegon was chosen to host the Bassmasters All-Star Week, bringing the country’s top anglers to compete for prize money. This tournament aired on national television and put Muskegon County in the spotlight as a major fishing destination. The winter won’t slow you down either, and once the local lakes have safe ice, ice fishing is a great option to enjoy the fisheries of Muskegon and White Lakes and many other fishing hotspots. www.visitmuskegon.org www.visitmuskegon.org 49 steamships by Ron Pesch history runs deep Muskegon’s maritime history runs deep with the area’s natural water resources and rich past. From the earliest days of settlement, water transportation has played an important role in life along our lakeshore. With the arrival of the lumbering era, Muskegon became a natural shortcut to the bigger cities of Chicago and Milwaukee, and in later years, the ships moved railroad cars, agricultural and manufactured goods along with business and leisure travelers. The late 19th century and into the 1930s, Muskegon and White Lakes welcomed the elegant fleet of Goodrich Lines, steel hulled steamers with distinctive bright red stacks. The Barry Brothers Line steamships and the Crosby Transportation Line, established by a former Muskegon lumber worker Edward G. Crosby, navigated 50 Muskegon County Visitors Guide 2016 Muskegon’s shores. In 1905, Crosby’s company established a car ferry service for the Grand Trunk Railroad. The fleet of three railroad car ferries moved to Muskegon in 1933 and operated from the city’s Lakeside area until 1978. On June 2, 1941, the Milwaukee Clipper ushered in a new era of Great Lakes travel. Transformed on the hull of the 1905 passenger steamer Juniata, the Clipper, as she was commonly called, would sail year around between 1946 and 1963, before her schedule was curtailed to summer-only service beginning in 1964. The ship could hold as many as 900 passengers, who enjoyed air-conditioned staterooms, a recreational sports deck, a movie theater, dance floor and bar. The service operated successfully through the fall of 1970. In 2004, the Lake Express, a high-speed catamaran, resurrected the long tradition of cross-lake ferry service from Muskegon to Milwaukee. Today, the ship makes three daily trips from each port from May to October, making the lake crossing in 2 ½ hours. Muskegon’s deep-water port is regularly visited by cargo ships, tankers, tugs, barges and recreational craft. This marine traffic, combined with several maritime museums, showcases an incredible waterfront resource that is uniquely Muskegon. S.S.
