O God, who have commanded us
to listen to your beloved Son,
be pleased, we pray, to nourish us inwardly by your word,
that, with spiritual sight made pure,
we may rejoice to behold your glory.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

Because you trusted me, I will bless you greatly.
First Reading Background
In the story of the sacrifice of Isaac, the sin of
disobedience which brought alienation and death is
healed by obedience.
The Canaanites believed the first born belonged to God.
Abraham's test of faith emphasizes the fact that God
demands obedience, not sacrifice.

prophet of Israel, represents the prophets.

Our Bible Study Sessions are on
Monday evenings, at 6:00 p.m. at the
Parish Center, 680 College Street.
Anyone who is interested in learning more about
the Bible is Welcome. We are studying the Gospel

RCIA INQUIRY SESSION
RCIA Inquiry Sessions have ended and will begin
again in August 2012. We are presently in the
Catechumenate preparing for the
Sacraments of Initiation. If anyone
is interested in studying about the
Catholic Faith they may register
with Sr. Dolores. The next Inquiry sessions will begin in the
Fall. ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION
Adult Confirmation Sessions are taking
place twice a month. Presently registration
for these classes is closed. Any adult who is
interested in receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation may
register with Sr. Dolores. The next adult preparation program
will begin in January 2013.

Rediscover Your Marriage – Retrouvaille
(pronounced retro-vi with a long i) simply means
'rediscovery'. The program offers the chance to
rediscover yourself, your spouse, and a loving
relationship in your marriage. 10's of 1000's headed
for divorce have successfully saved their marriages by
attending. Retrouvaille is a not spiritual retreat, not a sensitivity
group, not a seminar, not a social gathering. For confidential

Altar Society Members—There
will be an Altar Society meeting at
1:30pm on Monday, March 5,
2012 in the Pastoral Office.
Last Sunday, Bishop Garcia celebrated the Rite of Election
for our Catechumens (as well as Catechumens from other
parishes in the northern part of our diocese). It was a
beautiful and inspiring moment in the lives of our
Catechumens. They now are called "The Elect" and are on their way
toward their Baptism and our Candidate is moving toward his reception
into the Roman Catholic Church. Please pray for the following Elect for
Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil: Michelle
Barraza, Robert Barrientos, Jeff Brandon, Sherry Elliott, Arnold Gomez,
Julie Laib, Shannon Matthews, Claudia Estrada and our Candidate Tim
Miller. We also have thirteen adults already Baptized and completing
their Sacraments of Initiation.
The RCIA Team is very grateful for all the assistance in providing
a reception for over 600 catechumens and candidates for our
neighboring parishes. The donations of food were extraordinary and
the assistance in serving and preparing St. Benedict's Hall was

Parish for over twenty years helping reconnect the homebound to

Attention Women of our Parish
WINGS (Women IN God’s Spirit) is back! Morning
sessions will meet on Mondays in St. Benedict hall
on March 5th, 12th and 19th at 9:30am Evening
sessions are being planned and dates will be forthcoming.
Gather with other women in sharing your faith through prayer
and reflection. “Taste and see the goodness of our Lord” from

NEW BEGINNINGS—the parish’s separated/divorced group presents:
“Divorced. Catholic. Now What?” This is a special program
addressing the concerns of separated/
divorced Catholics. It offers support and
addresses important issues that arise as
a result of a divorce. The strong
emphasis on prayer, scripture and
Church teachings leads to healing and a
better relationship with Christ. Our next
meeting is Wednesday, March 14th
at 7:00pm in St. Benedict Hall and is
open to all separated or divorced Catholics. Do you have a friend who

Men's Cursillo Weekend Retreat—The upcoming
Men's Cursillo weekend will be March 22-25, 2012 at
Mission San Antonio. For more information regarding

El pasado domingo, el obispo García celebra el Rito de
Elección de los catecúmenos (así como los catecúmenos de
otras parroquias de la zona norte de nuestra diócesis). Fue un
momento hermoso e inspirador en la vida de nuestros
catecúmenos. Ahora se llaman "Los Elegidos", y están en camino hacia
su bautismo y nuestro candidato se está moviendo hacia su recepción

MAKING ROOM
“Why would a loving God ask a
father to kill his own son? I can’t read this
story without getting angry,” said Michael.
The other members of his parish Bible study
group nodded. “Even if Isaac’s life was
spared at the last minute, it seems as if God
wanted only blind obedience from Abraham.
I don’t get it!” Discussion followed
Michael’s remarks. Nora commented that our
understanding of who God is and how God deals with people
has evolved over time. Michael remained troubled. “I just can’t
see that this story has any value for me today.” Jim spoke up,
“Well, it hits me where I live.” Jim, the new one in the group,
tended to hang back—but not today. “Isaac must have been the
most precious thing in Abraham’s life: the one on whom all his
hopes for the future were pinned.” Jim went on, “To be asked
to give up that child was to be asked to give up his greatest
treasure, but the relationship with God was a greater treasure
than even his own son.” Jim paused and looked around him,
“The most precious thing in my life has been my wife. We had
no children so she’s been my whole world. When she got
cancer I bargained with God—‘I’ll do anything if you let her
live’—and she did live. In thanksgiving for her recovery I
joined the Tuesday prayer group and I signed up as a food
pantry volunteer. Just doing those two things made me realize
how much I wanted God and a life with God. My wife is still
just as dear to me, but God has taken a hold on my life my life
in ways I could never have imagined before—because I have
finally made room for God.”

“¿Por qué un Dios amantísimo le
pide a un padre que mate a su hijo único? No
puedo leer esta historia sin enojarme”, dice
Miguel. Los otros miembros de su grupo

“Aunque la vida de Isaac le fue perdonada al
último momento, parece que Dios sólo quería
una obediencia ciega por parte de Abraham.
¡No lo entiendo!” Se desató una discusión
inmediatamente después de estos comentarios de Miguel. Nora
dijo que nuestro entendimiento acerca de quién es Dios y cómo
Dios actúa con las personas ha evolucionado con el tiempo.
Miguel seguía con su inquietud. “Yo no sé cómo esta historia
pueda tener valor alguno para mí hoy”. Santiago se expresó así:
“Bueno, a mí sí me toca hoy”. Santiago, que era nuevo en el
grupo, tendía a ser un tanto retraído, pero no hoy. “Isaac tiene
que haber sido lo más precioso en la vida de Abraham, el hijo
en quien tenía puestas todas sus esperanzas para el futuro”.
Santiago continuó: “Pedirle que entregara su hijo era como
pedirle que entregara su tesoro más grande, pero su relación
con Dios era un tesoro aún mayor que su propio hijo”. Santiago
hizo una pausa y miró a su alrededor, después dijo: “Lo más
preciado de mi vida ha sido mi esposa. No hemos tenido hijos y
ella ha sido toda mi vida. Cuando le diagnosticaron cáncer yo
empecé a negociar con Dios, ‘Hago lo que sea si la dejas vivir’,
y vivió. En acción de gracias por su recuperación me uní al
grupo de oración de los martes y me apunté como voluntario en
un comedor público. Sólo por hacer esas dos cosas me di
cuente de cuánto yo deseaba a Dios en mi vida. Mi esposa
sigue siendo tan querida para mí, pero Dios ha tomado las
riendas en mi caminar de una manera que nunca antes me pude
imaginar y es que por fin le he dado cabida a Dios en mi vida”.

2012 Parental Rights Ballot Initiative
A new parental rights ballot initiative is coming: The
Parental Notification Initiative requires doctors to
notify a parent before performing an abortion on a
girl age 17 or younger. Our Bishops and the California Catholic
Conference encourages all Catholics to support this pro-life
effort. We need 807,000 valid signatures of registered
California voters to put this on the November ballot. Please

Combined collection next weekend, March 10 & 11, 2012
Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin
America. Many unique challenges face the Church in that region. A
lack of priests and trained lay ministers, high emigration rates, and the
alarming pace at which parishioners are leaving the faith make it
difficult for the region’s Church to provide for the faithful. It is more
important than ever that we keep faith with the Church in Latin
America and the Caribbean. Please give generously in next week’s
Collection.
Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services
Collection. This Collection supports six Catholic agencies that touch
more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from the
Collection help provide food to the hungry, welcome and support to
displaced refugees, and invaluable life skills to those seeking a better
life. How will you help? Next week, please give generously to The
Catholic Relief Services Collection and Jesus in disguise.
AARP Offers Tax-Aide Program: The AARP TaxAide program offers free personal tax counseling and
preparation assistance to taxpayers of low-to-middle
income, with special attention to those ages 60 and
older. Volunteers will be available to help residents on
Monday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Feb. 10
through April 13, at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West
Street. Participants should bring all the tax documents they
have received in the mail, last year's tax return and all relevant
information on income and expenses. Volunteer counselors are
not trained to assist in preparing tax returns that report
business, rental or partnership income. Call ahead to make an

HISTORY OF SALVATION
The first reading today continues the “history of
salvation” narrative that we hear throughout Lent this year.
Today’s story was among the best-loved in the Jewish tradition
(surely Joseph told the story to young Jesus as he formed him in
the ways of their faith); the early fathers of the Church were
very fond of it as a means of explaining the sacrifice of Christ
on the cross. The overall tone of the first reading, psalm, and
second reading seems a little incongruous with the dazzling
Gospel, until we remember that the Transfiguration was placed
as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind us of the
glory that awaits those who live faithfully and obediently to the
will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a preview of the glory of
his resurrection; for us it is a glimpse of the destiny of those
who continue, as we heard in last week’s Gospel, to repent and

HISTORIA DE LA SALVACIÓN
La primera lectura de hoy continúa la “historia de la
salvación”, relato que oímos a lo largo de la Cuaresma de este
año. El relato de hoy era uno de los más queridos en la tradición
judía (seguramente José se lo contó al joven Jesús cuando le
enseñaba los caminos de la fe); a los primeros padres de la
Iglesia les gustaba usarlo para explicar el sacrificio de Cristo en
la cruz. El tono general de la primera lectura, del salmo y la
segunda lectura me parece un poco fuera de lugar frente al
Evangelio deslumbrante, hasta que recordamos que la
Transfiguración se incluyó como el Evangelio de este domingo,
precisamente para recordarnos la gloria que les espera a
aquellos que son fieles y obedientes a la voluntad de Dios. En la
vida de Jesús, es un anticipo de la gloria de su resurrección,
para nosotros es una visión del destino de aquellos que
continúan, como hemos escuchado en el Evangelio de la
semana pasada, arrepintiéndose y creyendo en la Buena Nueva.

Our Spartans were busy collecting money for our Penny Challenge and
various dances. Together they raised $1,663.63. They presented the
monies collected to Mrs. Kuerscher who represented the Emmaus House.

Our Spartans were at it once again collecting $1.00 for anyone who wore
pink and $1.00 for anyone who wore jeans. Spartans raised $711.00 and
presented their monies to Mrs. Mary Andrade.
Give your family the gift of “Little Easter”
Every Sunday is a “little Easter,” with Mass as a celebration of Christ’s
victory over death and sin. For that reason, Sunday Mass is an obligation
for all Catholics. Many Catholic families find that developing Sunday
habits bring them closer together and closer to God. Try these ideas:
Family forgiveness: On Friday or Saturday night, gather together and
ask each other for forgiveness for offenses committed against one
another. Then go to Confession as a family weekly, monthly, or at some
other interval, as often as you can. (Parents may need to help children
with their examinations of conscience.)
Mass preparations: Before leaving for Church, go over the readings
you will hear at Mass so you can answer questions ahead of time. Or,
some families find that driving to Mass in silence leaves time for prayer
and reflection.
Mass Intentions. Ask each person to pick someone for whom the family
can pray at Mass. Write each name on a list and offer a family prayer for
these intentions after Communion.

Nuestros espartanos estaban ocupados recogiendo dinero para nuestro

Sacred Heart Church. Preparation for baptism should begin at least
two months prior to the desired date. The child’s birth certificate
and registration fee is required when registering your child for
baptism. Parents & Godparents must attend a pre-baptism class
and you may sign up for the class at registration time. All Baptism
Classes are held in the hall at St. Benedict Church on Saturdays at
2:00pm (arrive early to check in) and we kindly ask that you leave
little ones with a caregiver. As a courtesy to those in attendance,
doors will be closed at when class begins and all late arrivals will
be rescheduled. A baptism date can be set after registration and

♦ Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish
as soon as they become engaged or at least nine months prior to
desired marriage date in order to fulfill necessary marriage
preparation requirements. Contact Natalie Velazquez (831) 6379212 to begin paperwork and to set up an appointment with
one of the priests.
♦ Anointing of the Sick: Often, you may be able to arrange an
anointing by speaking with a priest after a mass. Please call the
parish office if you need to receive the anointing of the sick at
home. In emergency situations when the office is closed, the
answering service will relay the information to one of the priests.
In case of hospitalization, let the hospital staff know that you would
like to have a Catholic priest see you and they will relay the
message to the parish office.
♦ Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please
contact Sr. Catherine Lockshire (831) 637-9212 ext. 127 and she
will arrange an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to visit
you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff that you
are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy Communion and they
will relay the message to the parish office.
♦ Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the
parish office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
There is a $10.00 mass stipend to request a mass.
♦ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament is celebrated at Sacred Heart Church every
Wednesday from 7:00am to 9:00pm and on Sundays from 1:00pm
to 3:00pm.
♦ Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, the
mortuary will generally assist you in making some of the funeral
arrangements as well as contact us to confirm date and time of
funeral. Please contact the parish office to speak to the priest
about particulars of the funeral service itself.
♦ House Blessings: please, contact the parish priest personally
or call the parish office to make an appointment.
♦ Car Blessings: The priest is usually available to bless your new
car after Masses (weekday and weekend).
♦ Registración parroquial: para servirles mejor, por favor,
