We thank the many musicians of the Walla Walla Valley Academy Orchestra and their director, Benjamin Gish, for their music. And to the students of this ensemble, allow me to say that our congregation does not take for granted the thriving orchestra that lives just down the street. Yes, we enjoy your musical visits. Even more, we are thrilled to get to hear you several times in a single year. Thank you for your music today –we look forward to seeing you again in April. The two movements of our prelude derive from the Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.12 in B Minor by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). In a startling output of artistic energy Handel composed the twelve concerti of Op. 6 as a cohesive set during September and October of 1739. Musicians consider them some of his finest music and the pinnacle, along with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, of Baroque Concerto writing. The postlude presents a movement of the Concerto for Four Violins by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) featuring four of these high school musicians. Prior to the sermon we hear a composition by Terry Blackburn, a graduate of the WWU department of music. The hymn tune RESIGNATION appears in our hymnal as No. 104, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, a paraphrase of Psalm 23. As you prepare your heart to worship please take some quiet time to silently meditate either on Psalm 23, the words of Hymn No. 104, or one of the hymns we sing. Below you will find part of Hymn No. 89, Isaac Watts’ matchless picture of the day when all tribes of earth will pay homage to the great Creator God. Come, the great day, the glorious hour, When earth shall feel His saving power, All nations fear His name; Then shall the race of men confess The beauty of His holiness, His saving grace proclaim. –Kraig Scott pastor’s bookshelf I am very much enjoying our own Patti Knittel’s new book. http://www.adventistbookcenter.com/redcoats-and-scimitars.html –Alex Bryan ministry opportunities the second service 2015 WARMING CENTER: Approximately 200 volunteers are needed to staff the Warming Center for unsheltered persons.
