BASICS: We are working with the UU Partner Church Council, which facilitated our 2007 trip. Base package 10 days/nights, land $1,175. Children 12 & younger $512.50. Begins in Koloszvar, Romania; ends in Budapest, Hungary. Airfare not included. Single supplement, hotel upgrades available. Land package includes transportation, lodging, meals (unless otherwise indicated), guide(s), interpreter(s), and entrance fees to programmed tourist sites. The package does not include airfare or other transportation to/from Budapest & Koloszvar/Cluj or Bucharest, gratuities, alcoholic beverages, personal expenses incurred during free programs, or airport transfers before/after specified trip dates or different from main party. • Base package: (Koloszvar/Cluj arrival June 30) land package offered by UUPCC $875/ person double ($50 single supplement for final Budapest night) + $150/ person nonrefundable registration fee*. Add $100/person for two nights Koloszvar/Cluj 3*** hotel upgrade. Single rooms not guaranteed in Unitarian Center for Students & Pilgrims (UCSP) or Kisskapus. Arrival in Kolozsvar/Cluj, Romania. UUPCC transfer to hotel. Group dinner & orientation with staff. Overnight Unitarian Center for Students & Pilgrims (or Hotel Victoria 3*** upgrade) Some of the 2007 travelers in Szekelyderz. The 2010 trip marks the third time a group from Ames will have visited our partners in Romania. In 2002, the Rev. Lajos Lőrinczi and his partner, Tünde, visited us in Ames. Morning Unitarian tour of Koloszvar, including the Unitarian High School, First Church and the rock where Francis David is said to have stood when he converted the city to Unitarianism, and St. Michael’s church, where he once occupied the pulpit. Group lunch. Afternoon trip to Torda’s Church of the Edict and to the Alabaster village of Meszko. Hike & picnic dinner in Torda Gorge before returning to Koloszvar. Friday, July 2. Depart after breakfast for Tordatfalva via scenic back roads. Lunch and walking tour of picturesque Marosvarhely Tordátfalva today city center, including Cultural Palace and Teleki Library. Afternoon arrival in village. Welcome/reception. Overnight in parish house and/or home stays. Saturday-Tuesday, July 3-6. Days in village, including walking exploration, Sunday church services, a work project, watching the cows come home, day trips to nearby sites, a hike in the woods, and more. Communal meals. Wednesday, July 7. Lunch in the village before departure toward Budapest. Dinner and overnight in Kisskapus at the Unitarian B&B. Thursday, July 8. Morning departure for Budapest, with traditional gulyas lunch en route after crossing into Hungary. Evening arrival. Dinner and overnight. Fabius Hotel***. Friday, July 9. Transfer to airport, or extend your stay in Budapest or elsewhere. About 100 adults live in the village, down from as many as 600 in 1910. Most are older, but families with young children provide hope for the village’s future. Changes throughout Europe challenge their traditional farming. Pre-trip extension Tuesday, June 29. Gather/ arrive at Bucharest airport. Transfer to motor coach for two-hour drive to Carpathian Mountain resort town of Sinaia. Group dinner and orientation with UUPCC staff. Dinner and overnight Hotel Alpin Cota 1400***. Wednesday, June 30. Morning cable-car ride into the mountains above Sinaia. Group lunch, then tour of Peles Castle and visit nearby Orthodox Monastery. Free time to explore. Dinner on your own. Overnight Sinaia. Thursday, July 1. Depart after breakfast. Scenic drive to Bran for tour of Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle). Drive to Brasso/Brasov to visit Black Church, Romania’s largest neo-gothic cathedral. Free time to stroll city center. Lunch on your own. Evenning arrival in Kohalom/ Rupea. Dinner & overnight Lilliana Pensiune***. Village history Friday, July 2. Morning hike to visit the Saxon fortress at Kohalom, followed by a tour of the fortress church at Viscri (a UNESCO Heritage Site). Lunch en route. Early evening arrival in Tordátfalva. Balances are payable by check. Those from Ames who will start in Koloszvar/Cluj are likely to coordinate group travel to Koloszvar/ Cluj from Budapest. Some travelers may also coordinate international air travel. Tordátfalva narrowly escaped planned demolition during the communist era. After years of crushing oppression, villagers now work to reclaim and sustain their land, history, language, culture, and religion.
