I want to thank everyone who was involved from start to finish; the ECW women and members of the Church who were involved in the set-up, the generous donations of delicious baked goods and to those who provided yard sale items. The success of the sale would not have been possible without all of you. Although final numbers are not available as of yet, so far the event raised over $900.00. The final amount raised will be posted in the ECW report. Items that were not sold will be donated to Ranch Hope, Inc. in Alloway, New Jersey. For those of you who are not familiar with Ranch Hope, the following is information from their website: compassion. Ranch Hope was founded in 1962 by the Rev. and Mrs. David L. Bailey. While Rev. Bailey was in the pastorate, he gave a speech to a local service organization entitled, “Youth in Trouble.” After the meeting, a member of the organization challenged Rev. Bailey to do something about the problems he had outlined in his talk. The seed was planted to back up his concern for pre-delinquent teenagers with action. Ranch Hope, Inc. is a leader in fostering environments that transform lives empowered through Christ-centered love and Colleen M. Green, Chairperson ners, Nancy Garvin, Joan Munyon, Tina Lawton, and Haylee Conners. Sleeping overnight were Sean and Ian Garvin, Jim Gowland, Alice Nowak and Donna Freidel and Bobby Kramer (St. Thomas’ Glassboro.) Thanks also to everyone who contributed ShopRite Gift cards and other cash for a Wawa gift card to help with the shopping list for our guests . Thank you, also, to those who hosted refreshments in April: Joan Borkowski, Tina Sheehan and Nancy Garvin at 10 am and Phyllis Joslin, Rita Curry and Esther Sanders at 8 am. As graduations from college and high school approach, please let us know so that we can share the good news! Kitchen of Hope Thank you to everyone who donated food in April. As usual a special THANK YOU goes to the Holy Trinity members who gave of their time and their talents to unload food, to setup the distribution table, to bag the groceries, to break down the cardboard boxes, to help elderly clients carry food to their cars, etc. Needed for the May distribution are kids’ fruit cups, juice boxes, tuna packs, breakfast bars, packs of crackers, and packs of pretzel sticks with cheese. The next food giveaway is Saturday, May 9 beginning at 8 am at St. Thomas. The food delivery will be Friday, May 8 at 8:45 am. This is a change in the schedule. KOH is now every 2nd Saturday of the month. If you are available on either day, please join us in this wonderful ministry. You will enjoy the fellowship shared among the volunteers and the satisfaction of helping the less fortunate. Jackie Gould Thank you again to all of the volunteers who helped to make this event a huge success! Confirmation/Reception This is just a reminder that the date of Confirmation is May 13th at 7:30 pm at St. John’s in Salem. This is a convocation wide service with Bishop Stokes in attendance. Fr. Ed + The Banner May 2015 Page 3 This and That (cont.) ECW News How fortunate can a group be that gets to thank so many people so often? Thank you all for your generosity with the United Thank Offering outreach during April. This reflected so much gratitude and will make countless others grateful as well. Special thanks go to Colleen Green for resurrecting the Yard Sale this year. She and her support staff replaced the fellowship inherent in these activities that we feared was lost. The money raised will also go a long way into various communities, answering God’s call to love one another. Speakers at the April District Meeting shared information about FURever As Friends (Pets Helping People) through which they and their therapy animals help folks of all ages and circumstances to overcome some of life’s larger challenges. They are always looking for more volunteers to become a new team (human + dog/cat/rabbit/guinea pig) to spread the special gifts that animals have for people. If you, or someone you know, think this might be for you, pick up a brochure from the Narthex table. We are excited to be hosting the Diocesan ECW Annual Meeting and UTO Ingathering on Sat., May 16th. This is a great opportunity to see the larger body of the ECW at work right in our front yard, and to share in the spiritual renewal that such occasions offer. Join us at 10:00 a.m. for Eucharist, speaker, meeting, and luncheon. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Rita Curry (468-8215) for registration information and box lunch orders. At our next meeting we’ll be looking for input for the disbursement of funds at year’s end. Come with your ideas at 7:00 p.m. on Mon., May 11th in the Parish Hall. Joan Munyon, Secretary Musical Notes It was a particularly blessed Easter at Holy Trinity! Many thanks to our trumpeter, Greg Kuhn, and the people who joined our choir for the occasion, especially Laurie Cimino and Susan Cassidy. It was awesome! The bell choir will be playing this Sunday for the last time this year (May 3rd). I would like to thank everyone for their attendance and dedication this year. The Joyful Noise Choir will sing in June joined by Emily Provine in the perennial favor- ite, “My Lord”. We have had a great year and I am pleased with their enthusiasm for the bells. They are actually reading notes, so I hope to expand their general musical education. As always, during the summer I need soloists. Please let me know if you would like to sing or play an instrument some Sunday between now and September. I will be away July 12th. I am going to an 80th birthday celebration for the father of my “host family” in France. I have known them for 43 years now! I don’t like to fly, so I would appreciate your prayers for traveling mercies. Have a wonderful Summer! BCP, p. 830 The Banner May 2015 Page 4 Chicken BBQ Set for June 6 Just Weighing In Cluck, cluck, Cluck! Anybody miss me? For the 37th straight year, Holy Trinity will host its locally renowned chicken barbecue on the first Saturday of June (the 6th), featuring Smilski chicken, potato salad, beans, garden salad, roll and desert. Well, I’m back – not as treasurer, as Mark seems to have figured that all out. But I thought I might as well do an article every now and then – about something -- just to keep my hand in, as well as to offer my two cents! After all, I have been accorded the title of “Treasurer Emeritus .” Carla Henderson has volunteered to serve as chairman this year, and will be looking for lots of help to ensure the event goes as smoothly as possible. Volunteers will be needed to make up salads, cut and package deserts, serve on the take-out line, make the beans, clean up and a variety of other chores. Sign up sheets will be out in the Narthex shortly (if they aren’t already), so see how you can pitch in. Envelopes will also be available to make cash donations for goods. First, I need to pass on my thanks to all of you who sent cards (some of you sent multiples) and well wishes during my heart operation/ recovery period. As many of you know, I spent 13 days at Penn, came home with a lot of new plumbing – including an unexpected Pacemaker - and have been going through cardio rehab at Inspira for the last several weeks. My recent three- month visit back at Penn went well. The new valve is working perfectly and my heart function is right about where it should be (a 58 of 60, whatever that means). I have virtually no restrictions, although the nurse practitioner said I should confine lifting to under 60 pounds. But since I’m only at the four pound dumbbell stage with my cardio program, I don’t think the restrictions are going to be a problem any time soon. Letters/tickets for parishioners are on the Narthex table so please take them with you so we don’t have to mail. Typically, we include the same number of tickets that you have sold/used in the past. It would be great if you can either use the tickets yourself or find someone else who can. As ticket chairman, I will have additional tickets should you need them. Cost this year is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. To minimize the work load, there will be no dining available at the church. And please turn in your money as soon as you have collected it. In addition to helpers for the fund-raiser (our only one of the year) we’re hoping that parishioners will take a more active role in selling tickets. Look for ways to be creative in introducing others to the Holy Trinity experience. Last year, for instance, I was able to sell a large number of tickets to a nearby assisted living facility and then make a delivery. Are there any such institutions in your area where residents might like a change of menu? I’ve also had luck selling tickets to business establishments, including the local Post Office. This year I’m going to treat some new neighbors to a chicken barbecue dinner as an introduction to Wenonah and Holy Trinity, and to serve as a house-warming gift. Any new neighbors in your area that might like to experience our barbecue? How about connecting with old friends or relatives and sharing a nofuss, low-cost meal? Please do whatever you can to support the barbecue this year. Our degree of success will determine whether we will be able to continue the long-standing tradition in 2016. Gar Miller If you haven’t noticed, a lot has been going on at church. The ECW yard and bake sale, coordinated by Colleen Green, went extremely well. Lots of stuff, lots of helpers, lots of fun. For church members who haven’t been involved in that, it’s a great time to bond with others. Same thing with the chicken barbecue coming up. A great opportunity for camaraderie and getting to interact with people/ faces you don’t know, as well as to help support the church’s main fund-raiser of the year. As I write this, some 14 “strangers” are making Holy Trinity their home as part of the IHN effort. Four families, who have been temporarily displaced, are finding food and shelter through the generosity of you parishioners, and those of other churches in the area. As usual, a number of church members took care of the cooking – including 17year old Haley Connors, who signed up to do the Saturday night meal. Pretty impressed with that, as well as her willingness to assist Grandmom Nancy Connors who prepared a four meat-loaf dinner on Tuesday night. And thanks to all of the people who bought ShopRite gift cards to help stock the pantry back at the Glassboro IHN site. And, of course, we’re continuing to help provide food for needy families through the Kitchen of Hope at St. Thomas by bagging, handling the intake, and donating food that just seems to show up regularly under our Narthex table. I was responsible for putting together the Easter flower memorial list in the church program again this year – one of many jobs I have retained (including ordering supplies, the gift card program, and some other things) – and I hope that I didn’t forget anyone. If I did, please let me know. I did make a decision to put the late Jack Sheppard Sr. first on the list, because he just seemed that he should go to the head of the class. One of Jack’s last gifts to the church, in addition to paying his full pledge for 2015, was a generous check to cover the cost of installing a new dishwashing system in the undercroft kitchen.
