AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
The American Cancer Society is a voluntary health organization dedicated to
eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Through our ongoing programs of
research, public education, and patient service we are striving to reduce cancer
risks and provide for the needs of those who must deal with cancer on a daily basis.
The funds raised by the Long Island Division currently support a variety of cancer
control programs including:
• Cancer research grants at local facilities with a value in excess of $2 million.
• A 7 day sleep over summer camp for area children with cancer and their siblings.
• Free workplace and school education programs in cancer risk education and
self-screening.
MOUNT SINAI SAILING ASSOCIATION
The Mount Sinai Sailing Association is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting low-cost
Mission Statement
family cruising, friendly racing and social interaction between sailing enthusiasts in the area
of Mount Sinai Harbor. The Association was founded in 1975 and includes over 95 families.
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based,
voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a
major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing
suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and
service.
The Mount Sinai Sailing Association has sponsored The American Cancer Society Regatta
for thirty-three years. We are very proud that our Regatta is still the 2nd longest running
Charity Regatta in the United States. The ACS Regatta was also nationally recognized by
being included in an article of “Sailing World” magazine, September 1998 issue. Last year,
we proudly raised over $19,000 for the American Cancer Society.

American Cancer Society Guidelines on Nutrition
and Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention
Individual Choices
Achieve and maintain a healthy weight throughout life.
• Be as lean as possible throughout life without being underweight.
• Avoid excess weight gain at all ages. For those who are currently overweight
or obese, losing even a small amount of weight has health benefits and is a
good place to start.
• Engage in regular physical activity and limit consumption of high-calorie
foods and beverages as key strategies for maintain- ing a healthy weight.
Adopt a physically active lifestyle.
• Adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate- intensity or 75
minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week, or an equivalent
combination, preferably spread throughout the week.
• Children and adolescents should engage in at least one hour of moderate- or
vigorous-intensity physical activity each day, with vigorous-intensity activity
at least three days each week.
• Limit sedentary behavior such as sitting, lying down, and watch- ing
television and other forms of screen-based entertainment.
• Doing any intentional physical activity above usual activities, no matter
what the level of activity, can have many health benefits.
Consume a healthy diet, with an emphasis on plant sources.
• Choose foods and beverages in amounts that help achieve and maintain a
healthy weight.
• Limit consumption of processed meat and red meats. • Eat at least 21⁄2 cups
of vegetables and fruits each day. • Choose whole-grain instead of refinedgrain products.
Limit alcohol consumption, if you drink at all.
• Drink no more than one drink per day for women or two per day for men.
Community Action
Public, private, and community organizations should work collaboratively
at national, state, and local levels to implement environmental policy
changes that:
• Increase access to affordable, healthy foods in communities, worksites, and
schools, and decrease access to and marketing of foods and beverages of low
nutritional value, particularly to youth.
• Provide safe, enjoyable, and accessible environments for physical activity in
schools and worksites, and for transportation and recreation in communities.

How to Read the New Sunscreen Labels
Article date: June 17, 2013
Look closely at the sunscreen you buy this summer, and you may
notice some different wording on the label. This is the first summer
that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s new labeling
requirements are in effect. The new rules affect products that carry
an SPF (sun protection factor) number, including not only sunscreen,
but also makeup, moisturizer, and lip balm. Taking the time to learn
about the new labels can help you better protect your skin from sun
damage that can cause premature aging and skin cancer.
What’s new
• “Broad spectrum” claims must be backed by testing. The new rules
will make it clear to consumers whether sunscreens are “broad spectrum,”
meaning they protect against both UVB and UVA rays. All sunscreen products
protect against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn. But UVA rays
also contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. Now, only products that pass
a test can be labeled “broad spectrum.”
• Low SPFs must include a warning. Sunscreens with an SPF lower than
15 must now also include a warning. It reads: “Skin Cancer/Skin Aging Alert:
Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.
This product has been shown only to help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer or
early skin aging.” This same warning must appear on sunscreens that are not
broad spectrum.
• “Water resistant” does not mean “waterproof.” No sunscreens are
waterproof or “sweatproof” and manufacturers are no longer allowed to claim
that they are. If a product’s front label makes claims of being water resistant, it
must specify whether it lasts for 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or
sweating.
• Products can’t over-promise. Sunscreens may not claim instant protection
or protection for more than 2 hours without reapplying. They may not use the
term “sunblock.”
Take these steps to stay sun-safe:
• Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 30. Be sure to
reapply at least every 2 hours, as well as after swimming or sweating.
• Cover up. When you are out in the sun, wear clothing and a wide-brimmed
hat to protect as much skin as possible. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that
block at least 99% of UV light.
• Seek shade. Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the
hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
• Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. Both can cause serious long-term
skin damage and contribute to skin cancer.

Expert Predictions: Cancer Care 10 Years From Now

HOW Research Funding Works
Our Research Funding Dollars Come From You
The Society is not an endowed organization that has been underwritten in perpetuity by
a single wealthy benefactor, individual, family or corporation. We are funded, primarily,
from the money we can raise each year, mostly by donations from individuals averaging
$50.00. In 2013, about 19% of total dollars raised went towards cancer research. The
majority of the rest of your donations help fund vital patient services.
We Use A Portion Of That Money For Full-Time Researchers
There are currently more than 60 researchers employed to conduct cancer research
full time at the American Cancer Society. These cancer experts conduct large-scale
nationwide cancer prevention studies; produce the most widely-cited reports on cancer
occurrence, causes, prevention, early detection, treatment, and survival; study the
behavioral, psychosocial, and enviornmental factors related to cancer, and analyze the
global economic and policy landscape impacting cancer.
Most Other Funding Goes To External Researchers
At any one point in time, we are supporting more than 800 researchers throughout the
country and across cancer types. These extramural grants provide funding for what we
call investigator-initiated projects. That means that researchers at any nonprofit research
institution or university from across the country can apply for funding from us. Our job is
to oversee a rigorous application review and selection process. This peer review process
is actually conducted by external scientists, clinicians, and stakeholders who are volunteer
members of the review panels set up by the American Cancer Society.
But, We Do Get More Applications In Certain Areas
Because we allow researchers to submit proposals of their choosing, the number of
applications we get for each cancer type is largely reflective of the number of researchers
who are working in that area. And, certain areas of cancer research draw more researchers
than others. This can be because researchers perceive that there are more resources, or
exciting new breakthroughs happening in a particular area that would provide them with
greater opportunities to have an impact.
We Ensure Research Dollars Go To The Best Science
We get between 1,600 and 1,800 grant applications each year, but can fund only about
260 of these. We also focus on providing funding to early-career investigators – fostering
the next generation of cancer research. This research funding strategy has helped support
numerous important discoveries and some of the brightest researchers, including 47
Nobel Prize winners to date.
38
Cancer research – and its impact on patient care – has made some significant strides in just the last 10
years. For example, the availability and affordability of sequencing genetic information has improved
greatly – meaning researchers and doctors are now better able to get information about a person’s
risk for certain cancers as well as what drugs might work best for cancer patients. Another major leap
forward came with the approval of vaccines that help prevent infections from the human papilloma
virus (HPV) that cause cervical cancers. Many other advances have occurred in the areas of targeted
therapy, immunotherapy, and cancer screening technology.
Still, cancer remains a massive health problem that researchers across the United States and elsewhere
are working tirelessly to solve. Many experts are hopeful that they can build on decades of learning
and recent advances to move even more rapidly toward reducing the cancer burden.
We invited 10 American Cancer Society Research Professors to share their perspectives and
predictions for how cancer research will evolve over the next 10 years – and what this might mean
for patients. These 10 experts are among the very best in their field; the Society’s Research Professor
grants are awards that go to a select group – researchers and doctors who have made seminal
contributions that have changed the direction of basic, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, health
policy or epidemiologic cancer research.

Help today’s patients.
Find tomorrow’s cures.
Cancer research saves lives, and
patient programs are helping millions.
But we need your help.
The American Cancer Society is the largest
non-governmental funder of
cancer research in the United States.
We get results by investing in
various research efforts to help us understand
cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it,
and discover new ways to cure it.
Our funding of groundbreaking cancer research
has put us at the forefront of the
scientific battle against this disease.
