Tom’s Message
“E Pluribus Unum” is Latin for “from many,
One.” We have all seen those words. We
hold them in our hands almost every day. E
Pluribus Unum appears on most of our money.
The phrase was included in the Great Seal of
the United States in 1776. It refers to many

separate states united into one nation...from
Class of ‘66
many,
One. Those few simple words are a

strong part of our history, our culture and our
beliefs.
How does the phrase relate to Indian Hills Community
College? IHCC is one made of many: Centerville Community
College, Iowa Tech, Ottumwa Heights, even, briefly, Merged Area
XV Community College. All these fine institutions are part of
IHCC’s rich and proud history…from many, One.
IHCC is one made up of many in another way, too. We are
a collection of unique individuals, diverse in our backgrounds,
diverse in our beliefs and diverse in our goals. We are alumni,
students, community supporters, faculty and other employees, each
individually unique and equally precious to the college. Yet we
are one, united.
We are united in our support of Indian Hills. United in
our goal of ensuring that this college remains strong for future
generations. United by the common bond of the Indian Hills
experience. E Pluribus Unum. We are many. And we are one.

Rhonda’s Message
Welcome New Members—9,449 new
IHCC alumni and friends are receiving this
newsletter for the first time! We’re very pleased
to welcome them to the Indian Hills Alumni
& Friends Association. These new members
are the result of the enrollment campaign that
Rhonda Conrad
was conducted in the spring. They join 11,127
current members, nearly doubling our membership to 20,576.
The updated U.S. map on the back page shows the state
locations of our alumni and friends. With your help, we plan to
form alumni chapters in several of those areas.
Alumni frequently ask about their former classmates,
friends, and IHCC staff. This year’s Homecoming, scheduled
for Saturday, October 7, is a perfect place to get together with
those people. Activities are scheduled throughout the day on the
Ottumwa campus—a detailed schedule is below and on page 2.
The city of Ottumwa is also celebrating Oktoberfest at this time
so many events are planned in the community.
Alumni also tell us about the great experiences they enjoyed
at IHCC and how positively their education here has shaped their
lives. Many of their stories and quotes can be found in the Alumni
Update section. IHCC alumni are doing great things, and we
enjoy sharing their news.
If you’ve submitted your news but don’t see it in this edition,
it will appear in a future newsletter as space permits. Please
contact us when you have additional news, updates, or questions.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Book Signings by Alums
Two alumni—Kali (White) VanBaale, ’95 (AA), and Steven
Anderson, ’85 (AA)—will be signing their newly released novels
at Homecoming 2006 on Saturday, October 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. in
the IHCC Bennett Building.
Kali’s novel, The Space Between, is the winner of the 2005 Fred Bonnie Memorial Award for
Best First Novel. The story begins on Valentine’s
Day in Middle America when a teenage boy takes
a gun to school and kills two students, a teacher,
Kali VanBaale
and himself. Kali’s novel examines the aftermath
of this modern nightmare with clear-eyed dramatic precision that
will leave readers wondering what does indeed lurk in the dark,
unknowable spaces that exist between even the most loving of
family members. More details can be found on Kali’s website at
www.kalivanbaale.com, which was designed by Jason Hobbs, ’96
(Computer Programming).
Steven, who writes under the pen name of Steven
Law or Steven Anderson Law, recently completed the
novel Rodeo Summer. In this story, Trevor Hodge
never knew his cowboy father, and after he learns he
has died in an accident, he decides to put off a new
Steve Anderson
job and head to Oklahoma to find out all he can about
this man whom everybody loved…everybody except Trevor’s
mother. More information is available at www.stevenlaw.com.
