Celebrated on the Second and Fourth Sunday of each month immediately AFTER the 10:15 am Mass
Parents should contact the Parish House either before or soon after the
birth of the baby to register for the reception of the Sacrament.
Instruction for parents and godparents are held by appointments. Parents and godparents are expected to be practicing Catholics; godparent
must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation in order to serve as
sponsors.
The Sacrament of Matrimony
Arrangements must be made at least one year in advance. Please call
the Parish House for an appointment.
Sponsor Certificates: ONLY Eligible Registered & Practicing
Parishioners will be given certification to be a sponsor for
Baptism & Confirmation.

Thinking Out Loud . . . .
Last Sunday at the 12 noon Mass, the parish
of St. James of the Marches celebrated the ninetieth
anniversary of its foundation. From as humble a beginning as humanly possible, to a parish which has
served the spiritual needs of the people of Totowa and
beyond, everyone who belongs to St. James can be
proud of its past, enthusiastic with its present, and
more than optimistic about its future.
More than anything, we all must be grateful for
the abiding presence of God in the life of this Church.
Like the God of Israel who always remained with His
people through thick and thin, our God has remained
faithful to His people in the Borough of Totowa, in a
Church under the patronage of St. James, a humble
Franciscan Friar of 14 centuries ago.
We are grateful to the Franciscan Friars who
accepted this parish as a “mission parish,” one that
could not really stand on its own, until it matured, became strong and independent, and was eventually
given back to the diocese with its own pastor, a priest
of the Diocese of Paterson, Father Francis Reilly.
From an empty lot, to a parish which could
boast four buildings on property larger than a city
block, St. James grew, slowly, with great purpose.
In these 90 years, we have thousands upon
thousands of babies who became children of God. We
have sent thousands of souls, holy souls, hardworking people who loved this parish, home to God
enjoying their eternal reward.
We have, likewise, educated countless thousands of young minds and shared with them the endless love that God has for all of us. There is nothing
more important than imparting God’s love to these
young, open, and innocent children who deserve and
are entitled to know how much God loves them. The
people of this parish have long supported Catholic
education, both in the academy school and our Religious Education program.
In recent years, our program of evangelization
extended itself to our high school students so that
God’s love for them might be appreciated as they approached adulthood.
When looking at the people of this parish, it
must be mentioned how generous the people of St.
James are to the many worthy causes that come their
way. Helping the poor and needy, those who are
down and out, those who are new to this country, unwed mothers, children who are living in the worst of
circumstances through no fault of their own, have all
benefited from the big-hearted generosity of our people.
Every parish throughout the world is made-up
of people, good people, many very holy, all seeking
God in their unique way. At the same time, all of us
are wounded, have made bad choices, are weak in
one way or another, all of us in need of healing.
Each of us has an ego, and if we are not careful, and we allow our egos to go unchecked, the Body
of Christ, this parish, can suffer greatly. Our ego is a
tricky thing. We are not always certain why we react
the way we do or why certain people can push our
buttons rather quickly. People of faith and those that
desire to be holy still have egos, and their good efforts
and desires can still be influenced by wounded egos.
A hurt ego can see a power play taking place when, in
actuality, nothing could be further from the truth.
Thank God we have Jesus in the Eucharist
and the Sacrament of Reconciliation which both can
help us stay on or get back on track.
Last Sunday, after the noon Mass, two women
who were visiting came over to speak to me. The first
shared with me how beautiful our Church is, and the
second commented on how happy she was that the
Blessed Sacrament, reserved in the tabernacle, was
back on the high altar to be seen in an obvious way.
God’s greatest treasure, His Son in Holy Communion,
deserves the most prominent location in every
Church.
There are evenings when I go down to the
Church, the doors locked and the building empty and
remarkably quiet, and prayer comes easy. There are a
few shadows, an occasional crack from one of the
wooden pews, and the dance of the flames from the
candles on either side of the sanctuary. It is as calming a place to be as any I know. The Vigil Light reminds me of His presence, and both the high altar and
Altar of Sacrifice can be seen in a dignity which is all
their own. Quiet time in Church cannot be beat.
We should all be proud of this little parish with
a big heart in Totowa. We should always be mindful of
those who preceded us and gave so much of themselves so that we might enjoy what we have today.
We must recognize that this is our time to contribute what we can, in as many ways as possible, to
make St. James the strong, vibrant parish it has always been so that those who follow in our footsteps
might enjoy the same benefits we are enjoying in
2016.
St. James is a people with a wonderful history
and a bright and encouraging future.

The Children’s choir will not be singing this

ADULT CHOIR
Our final choir mass is this coming Sunday for the feast
of the Body & Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi).
2016-2017 Choir Season begins September. We continue
to have openings in our choir if you would like to join in the
leading of the congregation’s song and the singing of special choir hymns. You can choose to sing every week from
September to mid-June or a one-time chorus appearance
with rehearsals for special celebrations.
We are currently seeking singers for Father Patrick’s
40th Anniversary celebration at the 12 noon Mass, September 25. See Jeannine Pond, Music Director in the
choir loft to sign up after any weekend Mass.
We are grateful to those who, after
they have been away, contribute their makeup envelopes upon their return.
Weekly envelopes support the
Church by assisting in the payment of bills
and by keeping our Church fiscally sound.

Weekend of MAY 28 / MAY 29, 2016
I cannot believe that the school year will soon be coming to a close. Since our last update we brought the
month of May to a rousing finish with the first grade’s ninth annual Memorial Day assembly with our patriotic
salute to America and our armed forces. Other highlights of the month included our class trip to The Liberty
Science Center and we had the opportunity to see the opera “The Magic Flute” performed by the Opera Theater of Montclair. Our Walk-a-thon was a huge success. We all enjoyed the walk to the PAL where we had a
great time. We cannot thank you enough for your support of this event.
Our first grade journey is almost over and second grade is just around the corner. I’ve had the pleasure of
working with truly unique, talented, and amazing first grade students and families this school year. They have
certainly proven what precious gifts one can bring to a classroom. It is always with regret and sadness that I
must allow them to move on.
In closing, Mrs. B.s “Busy Bees” would like to sincerely thank the St. James parish community for the generous
support that you provide our school. We wish you a sun-filled, safe, and wonderful summer. God bless you always!

Weekend of May 28 / May 29, 2016
Important Reminder: Religious Education is ongoing for your child/children's Faith Formation,
beginning in Grade 1 and continuing through Grade 10, when they will receive
the Sacrament of Confirmation.
If you have a child in First Grade: he or she must be registered this year if you would like them
to receive First Holy Communion in Second Grade*
If you have a child in Ninth Grade: he or she must be registered this year if you would like them
to receive Confirmation in Tenth Grade*
*The children who are to receive either of these Sacraments must have two years of Religious
Education in order to prepare for them.
If you have not registered your children for classes starting in September as yet, please do so as
soon as possible. The office is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 3pm.

Opening Our Hearts & Working Together To Serve Others - Putting Our Faith Into Action. Our mission is for all of us to create a stronger bond and strengthen our Parish Family together with our children, as

to our Parishioners along with the Academy of St. Francis with various projects, such as soup kitchen visits, spending time with sick children and the elderly and participating at Special Olympics. We welcome all
parishioners & our extended family at the Academy of St. Francis to join us as we put our FAITH IN ACTION.
