Thinking Out Loud . . . .
We have had several beautiful days these past few
weeks. A good weather day assures the students in our
school that they will enjoy recess outside in the fresh air and
under the sun. The energy they exert during their lunch
break is astounding. They go every which way: singing, playing ball, jumping rope, running, and yelling; but they never
seem to tire or run out of stamina. There is a profound sense
of enjoyment at our children’s innocence which comes over
me each time I walk among them or watch them from the
kitchen window. Listening to the noise they generate can
touch even the hardest of hearts or lift the spirit of someone
who is having a bad day. Feeling a little blue? Take a walk
around the sidewalk of our play yard, otherwise known as
the Church’s parking lot. Chances are you will come away
smiling.
A week ago, a bus load of people from this parish
and others journeyed into the city where they have no pity!
(Don’t believe that for a second.) They toured St. Patrick’s
Cathedral, attended holy Mass there, and then had lunch at
Amelia’s Restaurant on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Have
you ever stopped to figure out why the Bronx is called “the”
Bronx, and yet we don’t call any of the other boroughs “the”
Manhattan or “the” Brooklyn? Neither have I, but if you have
the answer, please forward it to me.
It was a clear, blue-sky day with a gentle breeze
accompanying those pilgrims who journeyed to two of the
five boroughs which make up New York City.
After the tour and Mass, our bus headed for the
East Side unsuccessfully. Something was happening at the
United Nations. At least ten blocks were barricaded, and our
driver had to go ten blocks south, and then all the way crosstown before inching his way up on the West Side.
It was a long haul, and my stomach was growling. At
the same time, I had never been in Spanish Harlem and, in
spite of my hunger, the people, the buildings, and their architecture allowed my companions and me to enjoy all the
sights and sounds of that part of Manhattan.
The group on the bus hardly noticed the time as
they were talking and joking with each other. When we arrived at Amelia’s, our hungry stomachs were ready for the
good meal that was served.
It was a good group, fun to be with, and I would go
anywhere again with them. While writing about this short trip
to NYC, I recall my first trip to Rome. Friends and I were part
of a tour group, and once we landed, we could go pretty
much where and when we wanted. However, on the plane,
both to and from the Eternal City, sat a poor woman who did
not have her drinking under control. The more she imbibed,
the angrier she got, and she was quite verbal. Everyone but
everyone got blasted, and she was angry at the world. The
people in her row were spoken down to, the flight attendants
were subjected to her rage, and her poor husband was verbally abused for hours. (He should have been granted an
annulment on the spot when we arrived back at JFK.)
While some people become happy and want to sing
and others get tired and fall asleep, this woman simply vented her anger on anyone and everyone. While on a plane
over the Atlantic, there really isn’t much you can do and certainly nowhere to go.
That first time to Rome experience, listening to Mrs.
Miserable for over six hours, allowed me to appreciate the
pleasantness of those I shared a bus with to and from the
Big Apple.
Perhaps three weeks back, after the 7:30 am Sunday Mass, a parishioner approached me and said, “You are
the first priest to ever say thank you for a donation made to
the Church.” Certainly all of us, including myself, can be a bit
more aware of the kindness of others, especially the small
gestures which come our way. Being aware of the kindness
of others makes life a more positive and better experience.
Keeping up the tradition of thanksgiving, we thank
the following committee members of the Black and White
Gala: Jim Aulino, Ed Cusack, Kathy & Vinnie D’Antonio,
Adelaide Fiorarancio, Ronnie & Ted Kopec, Ginny &
Frank Mullen, Giovanna Paniscotti & Anita Sesta for all
their efforts.
The American Expression, the band which played
excellent music and entertained those at the Black and
While Gala, included Louis Conti, Ken DiLeo, Robert Gizzi, Jim Marotta, and Darryl Rhoades. Great job!
We also thank Bob and Barbara Gremillot for
their copies of The Great Gatsby, The Venus Fixers, and
Crucial Conversations.
Sincere thanks also go to Antonio Vacca for getting
the toughest of stains out of our albs. To Jim Booth and
Fred Del’Aquilla for repairing the wooden cross in the All
Saints Chapel, special thanks! Finally, thank you to Chris
Barbiere for the copy of Keys to Forgiveness.
In so many ways, it seems, goodness surrounds us.
Acts of kindness from members of our St. James family and
community occur almost daily, and we are most grateful for
them. These spring days, as the sun is shining and the flowers are blooming, we are enriched by the gentle expressions
of love and concern by those around us, and always by the
grace of God.
