Healing t A Way Forward
It has been a year of new beginnings, strengthening innovative initiatives,
and movement toward key executive transition.
The Children’s Initiative L
Our intensive treatment program helps children develop the emotional resources to express feelings in a
healthy way, to learn coping skills and develop core resilience. Their mothers learn how to manage their
own feelings effectively and support the children in their growth. The Schoellerman Foundation enabled us
to pilot this model.
With the support of the Julia and George Argyros/Argyros Family Foundation, Human Options expanded
our treatment program for children and mothers throughout the agency. Clinical staff were trained in
nationally recognized research proven methodologies. Far beyond shelter, Human Options gives mothers
and children the foundation for a new beginning.
Human Options in the community L
Human Options continues to be recognized for our commitment to collaboration and partnership. We
were invited to become the lead agency in the newest Family Resource Center collaboration housed at
Hoag’s Community Medicine Center for Healthy Living. Other new partnerships focus on the needs of
the military families and the link between domestic violence and homelessness.
Models for prevention – Innovative new projects L
Our Stand against DV campaign partnered with five local high school football teams who wore purple
athletic socks with Stand against DV and Human Options logos to showcase their commitment to
healthy dating.
We have expanded prevention efforts far beyond youth. We are one of the lead agencies in the Orange
County Women’s Health Project, Health & Domestic Violence System Integration. Our work with human
resources professionals and the police community engages people in positions of influence as advocates
and educators.
Preparing for transition L
After over 34 years as CEO Vivian is retiring at the end of January 2016. The Board of Directors is guiding
a thoughtful executive transition process. A strong and well balanced executive team gives Human Options
the strength to grow through change.
Thanks to the generosity and vision of the Keith and Judy Swayne Family, Human Options received a
$500,000 endowment challenge. We are proud to say we have met that challenge. The endowment will help
keep us strong through the transition and enable us to fund innovative programs over the years.

“As an organization, we recognize that no one
is immune to domestic violence, and as HR
professionals we felt we had an obligation to
educate our leaders, staff and Hoag
physicians,” explains Glenda Smith, Manager,
Physician Services Hoag Medical Group.
Domestic Violence: A Health Priority L
In 2014 we partnered with Kaiser Permanente to
develop a screening program in OBGYN offices across
Orange County. We trained doctors and nurses to
identify and assist victims and we became their first
line of defense, offering support and referrals through
our 24-hour hotline. When Hoag Hospital experienced
domestic violence among their employees, they
called us.
“As an organization, we recognize that no one is
immune to domestic violence, and as HR professionals we felt we had an obligation to educate our
leaders, staff and Hoag physicians,” explains Glenda
Smith, Manager, Physician Services Hoag Medical
Group.
We worked to create a safer environment for all their
employees by training key leadership personnel on the
signs and best ways to respond. Last year we provided
four trainings to more than 60 doctors, nurses, and
medical assistants and this past October we held 10
Carla knew she was in an abusive relationship.
Unemployed with little social support, she was
scared and needed help. She was referred to Minnie
Street, a Family Resource Center (FRC) in Santa
Ana. A historically dangerous place, plagued by
drugs and gangs, the community has worked hard
to make the neighborhoods around Minnie Street
a safe place for families. As the lead organization at
the Minnie Street FRC, Human Options has been a
big part of that effort.
Located throughout the county, Family Resource
Centers are collaborative community based centers
that offer a variety of low/no cost services to keep
families healthy and thriving. From counseling,
parent education, youth programs, and more, these
centers ensure that low-income families have access
to programs that can make a big impact in creating
brighter futures.
Domestic violence is the most common cause of
injury in women between the ages of 18-24. It is linked
to depression, anxiety, mental health problems, and
chronic illness, as well as an increased risk of heart
disease, stroke and asthma. Intervention makes
a difference.
Imagine a world where domestic violence is
screened for at every doctor’s visit, just like cancer
or heart disease, where doctors know the signs and
can confidentially assist a woman towards seeking
safety and help. Human Options is making this a
reality.
Creating Change
in the Community L
more training sessions to help their staff learn how to
effectively screen patients for a history of domestic
violence.
Maricela Rios-Faust, Human Options Associate Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer adds, “We
partner with physicians to ensure that patients who are
afraid to go home are connected to our safe haven and
receive necessary support.”
During 2014-2015, we played an instrumental role
in the Health & DV Task Force, convened by the OC
Women’s Health Project. The group encourages all
healthcare providers to recognize intimate partner
abuse as a health priority and make screening a part of
normal exams. Earlier this year, the Women’s Health
Project was awarded a significant grant from Blue
Shield to fund this work, and Human Options was
chosen as the lead organization on behalf of Orange
County’s state funded domestic violence service providers to develop a training curriculum for all healthcare providers. Together, we are bringing light to an
issue that thrives in darkness.
Through Minnie Street, Carla attended classes to
learn more about domestic violence and how to ensure the safety of her family. In addition, she and her
children received counseling. Once separated from
her husband, staff helped Carla get a part-time job
and referred her to another nonprofit that could provide childcare assistance. She expressed gratitude
for everything she’s learned through her experience
and explained that she wants “nothing more than a
safe, happy home for her children.”
Human Options has been the lead organization at
Minnie Street since 2006 and has been partners in
two others since 2006/2007 (in Santa Ana and
Lake Forest). Earlier this year, we were awarded
the lead role in a new center, located in Costa
Mesa. These sites, along with our own Center for
Children and Families, provide critical services to
those affected by domestic violence who are able
to safely live at home. These services are offered to
the community-at-large and allow us to serve more
people. Additionally, once families graduate from
our emergency shelter or residential program, they
are able to continue their counseling and care in
their own communities.
While these programs are partially funded by
federal, state, and county grants, it takes private
support to ensure their sustainability. Gifts like
yours are truly creating a better future for our
whole community.

and Families. Employees from the Fluor Foundation
generously donated and assembled items to furnish
this special room.

Honoring the Legacy
of Vivian Clecak
Since 1981, Vivian has been the guiding force behind
Human Options. In 2014 to honor Vivian and her
vision of every woman and child feeling safe in their
own home, the Swayne Family offered a $500,000
matching challenge grant to raise funds for our
endowment.
This challenge was successfully matched earlier this
year. We wish to thank the Swayne Family and all of
our donors who helped us meet the challenge. These
gifts to our endowment will ensure organizational
sustainability as well as safeguard Vivian’s vision into
the future.

Second Step Gives Families
a Way Forward
When a woman decides to leave an abusive
relationship, she often has nowhere to go. Second
Step, our transitional living program, helps women
gain self-sufficiency. Families live independently in
a confidential location while receiving counseling,
financial literacy and job readiness support.
“The staff at Second Step held my hand through
finishing school and attending court dates. I never
felt judged. I graduated from Second Step in March.
I am now a full-time nurse and we just moved into
our very own house. A year ago we were living in
a shelter and now we have our own home. Because
of Human Options, I am able to be a role model for
my girls. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to
change my life.”
— Christina, Second Step Graduate
Our new Champion Program allows donors to
sponsor a family at Second Step. Donors receive a
tour of Second Step and an opportunity to meet a

“Our family understands the need for victims of
domestic violence to have a safe and nurturing
environment to recover and get back on their feet.
In order to do this they must learn parenting skills,
become financially literate and be prepared to
enter the work force. The Second Step program
provides an opportunity for women to learn and
then practice these vital skills while living in a
safe and supportive community. That is why we
chose to sponsor the Champion Program.”
