Healing. A Way Forward. Again and again, graduates of our programs tell us stories of recovery and victory: “You gave me back myself and you gave my child her mother again.” For the past 32 years, Human Options has been changing and saving lives. We know the powerful impact of our work in two important ways: Schools, and we reach out to new partners on an ongoing basis. We are pioneers in outreach to health service providers – we educate physicians and nursing staff on how to link domestic violence victims to resources. Our partnerships with Kaiser Permanente and Hoag Hospital Newport Beach are models of collaboration. Safe Options for Seniors, the only such program in Orange County, provides training to law enforcement and mental health professionals, and continues to be a powerful service for seniors at risk. • • First, we see the human story. We stay in contact with our clients over time and we hear their stories, their personal way forward. Secondly, independent research has shown that nine out of ten clients are violence free one year or more after graduation from our residential programs Human Options is always looking ahead to build for the future. Our staff members are trained to help clients heal from trauma and find their way forward. The path to healing is formed through individual and family counseling, art and drama therapy, a warm, supportive environment and skilled and compassionate staff. Last summer, I escaped from an 11 year abusive marriage with my two children, ages 6 and 3. The abuse had started when we were teenagers dating. I thought his jealousy and controlling ways were normal and an expression of his love for me. Over the years the physical and verbal abuse increased and later he became financially controlling. He was also an alcoholic and as his drinking increased, so did his abuse. He eventually lost his job and I became the breadwinner. He would insist on taking my paycheck and tips as a hairstylist, telling me I was, “Too stupid and irresponsible to handle money.” first time. My family began therapy and I met with a case manager on a regular basis to create a plan for the months ahead. But shortly after I entered Second Step, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Fall Luncheon Annual Meeting Held in October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our Fall Luncheon is an opportunity to bring awareness and education to the community on this issue. Our annual meeting lets us honor supporters who have made a positive impact on our client families through their giving of time, talent, and treasure. In 2012, Human Options honored the following individuals and companies: Spirit of Philanthropy Karen and Jon Jaffe Volunteer of the Year Fall Luncheon Chairs, Danny and Kerri Sonenshine with keynote speaker, Courtney Macavinta, and Human Options Founding CEO Vivian Clecak. Zoe Rock Community Honorees Good Friends of Human Options The event brought almost 400 people to the Balboa Bay Resort and raised over $237,000. Kaiser Permanante, Southern California National Charity League, Irvine Chapter Serious Fun National Charity League, Vista Chapter This year, a Kentucky Derby themed Serious Fun brought more than 350 guests to the Balboa Bay Resort and helped raise more than $300,000 for Human Options programs. Human Options breaks the cycle of domestic violence by providing—Safety, Healing, and A Way Forward — to abused women, their children and families in our community. These services are provided through a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, community based counseling, and community education programs and seminars. Last year Human Options served more than 13,000 individuals in the following ways: By using a comprehensive therapeutic approach, Human Options meets all clients where they are in their journey by providing proven evidence-based therapy programs, counseling, case management, legal advocacy, and prevention education. Hotline: 2,379 individuals received crisis • 24-Hour intervention and resources for safety. Programs: 359 women and children • Residential received safe haven and life-changing services These components are all essential for our clients to be successful in breaking the cycle of domestic violence. (Emergency and Transitional Housing). Center for Children & Families: 1,190 individuals received counseling, legal advocacy, and prevention education (Community-based counseling and legal advocacy).
