To you, our Human Options donor community, our accomplishments L
What Sets Human Options Apart?
33 years of Safety, Healing and A Way Forward
L
33 years of Innovative Partnerships and Programs
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & THE HEALTH COMMUNITY
We continue to help develop strategies for identifying and referring patients in need of domestic
violence programs, in partnership with the Orange County Women’s Health Project. We specifically
created a new training program for Kaiser and Hoag doctors, nurses and professionals.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & THE LEGAL COMMUNITY
We are expanding our legal advocacy program, recruiting and training more pro bono lawyers and
doubling the amount of clients served. We broadened our education around victim rights, helping
women obtain restraining orders and preventing their landlords from evicting them in domestic
violence cases.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & HOMELESSNESS
Because approximately 75% of homeless women and children have experienced domestic violence,
we have become an active partner in the multi-agency effort to end homelessness in Orange
County. As part of the countywide ten-year plan, we are ensuring that safety and healing are
included in the strategies developed to help people achieve permanent housing.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & TRAUMA
With the support of two significant family foundations, we have deepened and expanded our
therapy programs. Research proves that children who grow up around domestic violence have
permanently elevated levels of stress that limits their ability to learn, play, and do well in social
situations. Our new intervention programs are giving these children a second chance.
Your investment has allowed us to make an impact in the key areas outlined above helping
victims escape domestic violence. With your support, we continue to create change every day.
We remain guided by the vision of a world where no woman or child has to be afraid
in their own home. Thank you for your shared belief in this vision.
Artyn Gardner Board President Vivian Clecak, LCSW
Founding CEO
L
Safety Through Legal Advocacy
L
Pro bono lawyers make a big difference in helping victims feel
safe. Often unaware of their rights, lacking resources, and
facing various barriers in obtaining legal assistance, victims
seldom know where to turn.
Our legal advocacy program provides support obtaining
restraining orders, filing police reports, getting property returned,
accompanying victims to court, and even helping with employers
and landlords.
We continue to grow our pool of pro bono counsel. This past year,
we expanded upon our partnership with firms like Troutman
Sanders. Through a pilot program, we trained their lawyers in the
nuances of working with domestic violence victims in a shelter
setting and now they are offering legal assistance to our clients.
“We won. I got my restraining
order. Before the hearing, I was
extremely afraid. I was nervous.
I felt stuck. Once the judge made
his ruling, I felt like I was ready for
the next step. I felt like a weight
had been lifted off my shoulders.
I felt like I could breathe again.
It was all behind me.”
A GENEROUS GRANT
from the
Schoellerman Foundation
provided funding to strengthen
our work with children
and mothers.
~ Jane, Emergency Shelter client
Jane attempted to get a temporary
restraining order on her own and
was denied. She was devastated.
We were able to pair her up with a
team of attorneys from Troutman
Sanders who represented her and
helped her win. She finally felt safe.
Healing Through Art
L
By the time 15 year old Thomas entered our emergency shelter with
his mom, he had already experienced a childhood filled with fear and
violence. Living in “survival mode,” he turned to drugs and alcohol
and rarely attended school. It is often difficult for survivors of
domestic violence to verbalize their feelings, but art can be a
powerful therapeutic tool.
Through art therapy, Thomas had a safe place to express his anger,
sadness, confusion and frustration. He worked with our staff to
identify his feelings when he entered the shelter (top picture) and
his hope for the future (lower picture). His art depicted feelings of
loneliness and rage, but his second picture showed him smiling in the
sun as he graduated high school. He described this as the light at the
end of the tunnel.
This art project was the start of his healing and the first step in
breaking the cycle of violence. Throughout his thirty days at the
shelter, Thomas enrolled in a new school and continued to use art
as a way to heal.
Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their
own partners and children when they are adults.
~ The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
“Katy and I believe if you save the children you can break the cycle.
That has been at the root of our commitment to Human Options’
children’s program from the beginning. That is why when Human
Options came to us with an idea for a program that could help those
children exposed to domestic violence recover and break the cycle,
we chose to seed it.”
~ Jack Schoellerman
Schoellerman Foundation
Human Options Past Board President
A Way Forward from Trauma
L
When two year old Maddie first arrived at our emergency shelter,
she showed no emotions and wouldn’t talk to anyone. Spending her
first two years of life in a constant state of chaos, she suffered from
severe developmental, emotional and behavioral problems. Sadly,
this is not uncommon.
Domestic violence has a tremendous impact on brain development.
From delayed verbal and motor skills, anxiety and depression, to
difficulty identifying and expressing emotions, the effects of trauma
can be deep rooted and long lasting in young children. Fortunately,
Human Options has been working to implement new interventions
to help children like her.
Our program promotes resilience and strengthens children’s ability
to cope with their exposure to violence, improves the mother’s
emotional state and her parenting skills, and enhances parent-child
communication and bonding. Today, Maddie is barely recognizable
from the child that entered our shelter. Maddie and her mom, and
families like theirs, have the chance for a much brighter future.
And this is just one family. With this program, 83% of children have
exhibited an increase in positive social interactions with peers and
93% of mothers have described a decrease in levels of anxiety.
A recent investment from the Argyros Family Foundation has
allowed us to expand and launch the Argyros Children’s Initiative,
which will further increase our capacity around new therapeutic
interventions in our children’s programs and strengthen our
legal services.

Together We are Part
of the Solution
Our Community Education program actively engages Orange
County residents and institutions in reducing and preventing
domestic violence. We place an especially high priority on
educating youth groups, reaching thousands of students each
year. In addition, our educators speak to key community groups
and organizations including police departments, healthcare
professionals, social service agencies and faith groups.
Through this program, we educate more than 10,000 people a
year about the cycle of domestic violence and a way forward to
a safer tomorrow.
105 families had safe housing, counseling,
vocational guidance, and support becoming
self-sufficient.

Through a one-time presentation conducted at local middle and
high schools, we talk about prevention, warning signs, where to
get help if needed and how to leave an abusive relationship.
Safe Dates
Through a 10-week series for teens ages 13-17, we teach
adolescents about relationships, healthy communications,
boundaries, cyber bullying, and stress management.
We serve thousands of students through these programs,
reaching middle and high schools in Anaheim, Tustin, Santa
Ana, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, Mission Viejo, Irvine,
Newport Beach and Corona Del Mar.
1 in 3 adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual,
emotional,or verbal abuse from a dating partner.
Natalie Pearl and friends led a community wide effort to collect

“When Kaiser Permanente had the
opportunity to partner with Human
Options, there was no hesitation.
Through our partnership, we have
developed a screening program in
our ob-gyn offices that provides early
intervention for our members
experiencing domestic violence during
pregnancy, a very dangerous time for
both mother and unborn child.”

Luncheon for Domestic Violence Awareness 2013
Nearly 475 guests came together in “A Salute to Old Hollywood” at the Balboa Bay Resort to raise nearly
$2 million - $900,000 at the event and another $1 million grant announced by honorary chairs
Julia Argyros and daughter Stephanie Argyros to fund therapeutic programs for children.
More than 550 attendees were inspired by Dr. Drew Pinksy’s educational presentation
at our annual Luncheon for Domestic Violence Awareness, that net over
$250,000 to fund Human Options programs.
