(on the cover) Williams Chemistry teacher Rachel ThomasShapiro observes the lab practical that served as the Chemistry
Honors final for 2010–11. Mrs. Thomas-Shapiro is using
research on teenage brains to shape her course.
We Have Great Chemistry
When people bond easily and naturally, it is often
remarked that they have “chemistry.” I find it
fascinating how this very objective, rather concrete
academic subject has become a shorthand to describe
human interaction, which is often difficult to pin
down or predict. Of course the fact that chemistry
also deals in terms of bonds, catalysts, and reactions,
helps explain its usefulness as a framework for
understanding ourselves.
The Williams School community has the elusive,
great chemistry that is hard to define but easy to
see in action. Whether it’s alumni inviting faculty
to their weddings; coming back to participate in
or help with athletics, the library or arts events;
attending school fundraisers; or keeping classmates
connected throughout the decades, it is clear that the
connections forged in this special place are rock solid
and enduring. As student Ambassador Drew Watson
understands already in his 5th year, “I love Williams
because it’s easy to make lifelong friends in such a
tight-knit community.” Asked to sum up Williams in
a word, the majority of Ambassadors gravitated to
“Community” and “Welcoming” as well.
In sharing Williams’ message to the community at
large, we continue to emphasize the pride and joy
in belonging to this inclusive, vibrant environment.
This truth resonates through the pieces in this issue,
whether in our cover feature on Chemistry teacher
Rachel Thomas-Shapiro (pg. 6), community scenes
from Commencement and Reunion (pg. 4 and pg.
26 respectively), alumnus-penned tribute to the late
Williams history teacher Bob Merritt (pg. 28), or the
impressive donor roles shared in the Report of Giving
2010–11 (pg. 10). The steady stream of alumni news,
with young alumni in particular growing ever more
active in sharing classnotes, is further testament to
the power of belonging. It begins in these halls, in
these classrooms, and on these fields, but it reaches
out to make a positive difference across the years and
miles.

Rounding Out the Board
AmbassadorFall2011
Williams’ Board of Trustees welcomed five new members
for school year 2011–12: (l to r below) Mrs. Marissa
Mills, Parents Association President; Mr. Ethan Goller;
Mr. William Verhoeff; Dr. Patrick Doherty; and Atty.
Ron Meneo. With this “new class,” The Williams School
Board of Trustees taps community leaders in marketing,
law, medicine, and finance (who also happen to be
fascinatingly well-rounded) to help guide the school.

Collaboration Keeps Community in
the Dark (...in a Good Way!)
Thanks to a great community effort, the Arts Department
is thrilled to announce the new darkroom in the
Wronowski Arts Wing for use with the Digital Imaging and
Graphic Design course. Though the “Digital” element of
the course title might seem to obviate “old school” film
processing, Mr. Greg Bowerman explains, “In this day and
age when our students are so technologically informed,
the processes and skills explored and developed in the
darkroom give them a hands-on experience with the
fundamentals of the photographic process. This helps
them with their visual, analytical, and critical thinking
skills. Plus it’s a whole bunch of fun!”
The Digital Imaging and Graphic Design course begins with
a thorough grounding in the basics. For example, students
start the year creating pinhole cameras to understand the
mechanics of capturing light to create images.
Mr. Bowerman notes that a number of faculty, staff, and
administrators were instrumental in bringing the new
darkroom to life, but he wanted to specially thank Mr.
Dennis Doughty (a photography enthusiast who donated
equipment following Williams’ appearance on WFSB
Channel 3’s Cool School in November 2010) and Jared
Klee ’09 for their help and generosity. As Mr. Bowerman
says, “We look forward to a year full of exploration and
creativity.”
Dr. Patrick Doherty is Chief Neurosurgeon at Lawrence &
Memorial Hospital in New London. Parent of Daniel ’16,
Dr. Doherty is an avid skier, biker, kayaker and reader. Mr.
Ethan Goller is President of Structural Graphics, a leading
firm in the field of dimensional advertising. Parent of
Mac ’13, Ethan is a volunteer firefighter with Essex Fire
Engine Company No. 1, and holds national certifications
in firefighting. In addition, he holds both national and
state EMT medical certifications. Attorney Ron Meneo
is Managing Partner at the Meneo Law Group in New
Haven, CT. Parent of Kimberly ’12 and Carrie ’14, Ron is
also a triathlete, guitarist, and photographer. Mrs. Marissa
Mills is Director of Religious Education at Sacred Heart
Church in Groton and an etiquette trainer and consultant.
Parent of Caroline ’10, Grace ’12 and Xavier ’15, Marissa
is a gardener with a special passion for roses. Mr. William
Verhoeff is Senior Resident Director, First Vice President at
the New London office of Merrill Lynch. Parent of Parker
’12 and Adam ’14, Will is a squash player and bicyclist.

The Chemistry of

Collaboration
Profile of Mrs. Rachel Thomas-Shapiro, part-time singer, part-time farmer, part-time yogi,
full-time Williams Chemistry teacher, overtime mom!
By Meghan Ryan, Director of College Counseling
At a school whose mantra is You
Belong, Chemistry teacher Rachel
Thomas-Shapiro works to help make
students feel that they belong better:
that they aren’t simply surviving
high school but that they are
thriving in the classroom. ThomasShapiro, or “Thom-Shap,” as she
is affectionately addressed by the
Williams community, has started
somewhat of a revolution at Williams.
One of the two 2011 recipients of the
Brian J. Carey Faculty Award, ThomasShapiro, [along with Spanish teacher,
Ana Ramirez,] was selected for going
“above and beyond” for Williams’
students. What’s she done? Made
tests more student-friendly.
After attending a “Learning and the
Brain” conference at MIT last fall
with Assistant Head of School, Chris
Benbow, and Classics Chair, Melissa
Moss, Thomas-Shapiro returned to
school invigorated and ready to put
into practice what they had learned.
Specifically, Thomas-Shapiro applied
what she had learned about the
brain development of teenagers and
implemented changes in the way
she gave formal assessments. Now,
instead of traditional written exams
for each student, mid-terms and finals
are lab practicals done as a group,
during which students collaborate to
solve problems in a lab-like setting.
Other assessments involve more
traditional problem-solving, but are
still collaborative. Thomas-Shapiro
implemented changes because, “ kids
are different than they used to be,
and because they would do poorly on
tests even if they were strong in class.
I made the classroom experience
different – not easier. It’s still a

classical curriculum but I’m trying to
address it in more appropriate ways,
since learning styles have changed
due to the way students have
instant access to huge quantities of
information on the Internet.”
Another primary reason for the
collaborative assessments in ThomasShapiro’s classes is to ameliorate
anxiety for students. “Even strong
students get test anxiety,” ThomasShapiro said. “This allows students
who second-guess themselves
to really shine by explaining to
classmates what they have learned.
The assessment tool turns into a
learning tool as well.” It means, too,
that Thomas-Shapiro needs to pay
closer attention to the students
before the assessments to see where
their strengths lie. “I need to be
observant, intuitive, and empathetic,”
she said, which is a more dynamic
requirement than simply correcting
written work. Thomas-Shapiro’s test
transformation is paying off in terms
of student satisfaction and success:
a questionnaire she gave students
about the new assessment style
revealed that they loved it. Moreover,
scores of 4’s and 5’s on the Advanced
Placement Chemistry exam this
past year were supporting empirical
evidence.
One of her AP Chemistry students,
Julie Philippe ’12, raved about her
teacher’s methods:
“…students could collaborate with their
classmates and discuss (and perhaps
argue) about test questions, which would
initiate active thinking and stimulate
all the knowledge that students had
acquired before the test in a group
discussion. This was a strategy that was
both valuable to the student (we learn
from each other) and to the teacher. One

of the first things Thom-Shap asked us to do as AP Chemistry
students was to learn to depend upon, support, and work with
each other, rather than always asking the teacher for answers.
Thom-Shap often encouraged us to actively engage in problemsolving discussions in which everyone combined a little bit of
their understanding to finally solve the challenging problem. I
really liked this strategy: it really made us think and work to our
greatest potential rather than constantly depending
on the teacher. Thom-Shap has a wonderful teaching
strategy and her willingness to try new ways to
enhance the learning of her students is impressive
and indispensible, especially for a subject as
meticulous and challenging as chemistry.”

Outside of school, Thomas-Shapiro continues
researching the brain in her “free” time. “It’s easy
to find primary source material and studies online,”
she said of her proactive approach. This allows her
to continue to adapt her curriculum and delivery as
students themselves change.
In addition to her innovative work as a Chemistry
teacher, Thomas-Shapiro is also is the parent of two
upper school Williams students, Noah ’12, and Hannah
’14. Like many faculty members at Williams, ThomasShapiro is known for her sharp analytical mind and
for connecting closely with her students and advisees;
she looks out for their well-being and development as
students and as individuals.
A woman who participates in more than seems possible
given the demands of her job, Thomas-Shapiro is also an
active member of The Chorus of Westerly; she rehearses
with her kids (also members) once a week and participates
in about five performances a year. (For anyone who hasn’t
seen this group perform, it’s a magical experience.)
Additionally, Thomas-Shapiro built her own chicken
coop in her back yard, the inhabitants of which
yield eggs for her family and friends. “It’s good
to know where your food comes from, and if
I’ll have enough eggs for a soufflé today.” Her
gardens also provide some of the family food.
In keeping with her homemade, whole-hearted,
and holistic approach to life, Thomas-Shapiro is a
yogi of sorts, and practices yoga about five times a
week, usually on her own. Lastly, as a former rower
and crew coach, Thomas-Shapiro still participates
by working with the Mystic Seaport’s championship
whaleboat crew. This group practices year-round and
competes annually in races in New Bedford against as many as
10–15 other teams.
In a school where individualism and innovation are prized,
Rachel Thomas-Shapiro, with her esoteric interests and impetus
for evolution, definitely embodies what it means to belong.
Stay Connected!
Nothing beats popping in to school in person, but the next
best thing is visiting www.williamsschool.org/alumni to
check out the new website’s Alumni Portal. The public side
of the page collects Alumni news and shares a calendar
of Alumni events. In addition, Williams’ website now
has an alumni-only, password-protected area for alumni
to connect and share classnotes, pictures and contact
information.
To get started, visit the Alumni page and click on “Log-in
to Alumni Belong.” At the next screen click on “Retrieve
Password” to have your individual password emailed to
the email account Williams has on record for you. After
logging in with those credentials for the first time, you’ll
be able to reset your password and update any of your
directory information.
Be sure to look through your profile and fill in or select
information that you want to display or keep private.
Our default is to share mailing address information while
keeping email addresses hidden to start. You may, of
course, opt to display your address or hide it entirely.
Post recent (or vintage!) photos of yourself on your page
or friends on the page for your Class. Share details about
work, family and school beyond Williams. Raise your
“virtual hand” to be part of a mentor network to let fellow
Williams students and alumni connect with you about your
career, field of study or college/university.
The online Alumni Directory also has Class pages which are
a great spot for alumni to share plans for reunions, class
milestones, etc.
If you have any questions about the Alumni Portal or
encounter difficulties logging in, please contact Director of
Communications Tim Reitz at [email protected] or
860-439-5056. Looking forward to seeing you online!
Williams’ new Alumni Portal online can be a great tool for
staying connected...if you use it! As an added incentive
to explore this great tool, The Williams School will
hold a drawing for an iPad at the Alumni Soccer game
on Saturday, November 26 (Thanksgiving weekend,
but attendance is not required to claim the iPad). To
be included in the drawing, simply log in at www.
williamsschool.org/alumni and update your directory
information before Friday, November 25, 2011.

conomic forces can seem more volatile than any
chemistry lab imaginable, and we are all adjusting
to the new reality of a very different economic environment. A responsibility of our Board of Trustees is to
position The Williams School in such a way that
its financial stability can be assured well
into the future. This encompasses
careful budgeting and investing,
disciplined cost control, good plant
maintenance, and fundraising success. This year’s balanced budget
is testament to both sound management practices and a strong,
generous community.
On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I
offer our heartfelt thanks for the substantial support you
have shown the 2010–11 Fund for Williams. Your annual fund dollars are essential to meet the needs of our
talented faculty and staff and those most deserving of
all, our students. Technology, fuel, equipment, campus
maintenance, salaries and benefits—the list is long, and
the costs are high and constantly rising. So, we too must
rise up with continued support. It will take all of us working together and giving all we can to continue to fulfill
the promise of a bright future for The Williams School
and the students we serve.

The Chemistry of Community
ALUMNI
Our alumni community includes more than 3,000 alumni
living in all 50 states and 27 countries. This year we connected with alumni at events, reunions, through the Ambassador, on the phone and online, and through our own
friendships; and we encourage you to do the same in the
year ahead. This is a valuable network and an important
part of our school and our lives.

Senior Parent Gift 2011
TheWilliamsSchool
The
Williams School
22
The Senior Parent Gift Committee, led by Carol
Brekus-Watson, raised an astounding $60,000 to
fund improvements to the School Library. The
focal center of this transformation is an Scurve technology bar for laptops and iPads.
Other improvements include a new air-conditioning system, new carpeting and furniture,
and a designated teaching area complete with
a drop-down screen, projector, stools and training
tables. Many thanks to the dedicated and generous
parents and grandparents of the Class of 2011
who joined together to make this improvement
possible.

Juleps & Jazz
AmbassadorFall2011
Hats off to the over 200 supporters who turned out in their
finest Derby attire to support The Williams School’s Juleps
& Jazz dinner & auction on May 7, 2011.
The event, which netted over $43,000, exceeded all
expectations and generated vital funds that were critical
for balancing the School’s operating budget. The generosity and dedication of parents, alumni and faculty was on
abundant display in the bevy of fantastic items available
and the exciting response to them in both the silent and
live auctions. A particular highpoint of the evening was the
outpouring of support for the purchase of classroom iPads.
Special thanks to auctioneer Mark Bokoff ’83 for a fun and
very successful Live Auction.

Reunion 2011
The Williams School
26
Saturday, June 18, saw Williams bursting with activity as a
record number of alumni returned for Reunion 2011. The day
began with a Fun Run that saw Neal Bobruff ’76, Tom Fagin ’06
and Bryan Scully ’09 looping around the Connecticut College
campus with Head of School Mark Fader, faculty and staff
members on a course that veteran Cross Country coach Bob
Stack organized.
Later in the day, lunch on the new patio and a slip-’n-slide
and moon bounce on the Athletics courtyard attracted alumni
and their families to the afternoon picnic. Alumni shared
memories and caught up on more recent news while perusing
Legendas, gathering for class photos, and enjoying the gorgeous
weather. Lastly, Mr. Fader and Mr. Furgueson led alumni on
a tour of the school, helping them discover new areas of the
school and new life in old ones. A particular highlight was
alumni finding their former cubbies in the senior lounge (and
finding them useful now as seats for their little ones)!
The long distance award for the day goes to Ryan Levine ’01,
who flew in from Hong Kong. Special thanks to class organizers
Neal Bobruff ’76, Brett Terry ’86, and Amy Danenberg King ’91,
as well as faculty and former faculty who made sure to take
part: Bill Furgueson, Jane Martineau, Scott Hockford, Steve
Danenberg and Ed and Sheila Wheeler.

“Uncle Bob” Merritt, as he was
affectionately known to nearly thirty
years of Williams students, was born
near Cape Girardeau, Missouri in 1930.
(Both the cadence of Bob’s voice and his
political views were uncannily similar
to Cape Girardeau’s most famous son,
Rush Limbaugh.) Herbert Hoover was
President, the Depression was in its infancy,
and Bob’s early years were difficult. His
father suffered from alcoholism. This
condition made a deep impression on Bob
and caused him in later years to preach
abstinence with a fervor that would have
made Oliver Cromwell proud. His mother
coped with his father’s disease with devout
faith in the tenets of the Christian Science
Robert Merritt
Church, a faith which she nurtured with

In 1948, Bob entered Principia College, a

By the ’60s, Bob had married, had (in his
own words) “the most talented daughter
in the world,” and had found his way to
private schools in Connecticut. He joined
the Williams faculty in the mid-’60s
(1967, if my memory is correct). Marion
Hamilton, the formidable headmistress
at the time, was excited to bring to the
faculty a courtly gentleman with a pedigree
from Massachusetts boarding schools.
Bob was conservative with a small “c,” a
traditionalist who believed history was part
of humanistic education, and a teacher
who held that students had to know a
basic body of facts before they could form
opinions on a subject. His political views
were conventionally liberal. History has not
recorded what Marion Hamilton thought
of Bob’s intellectual journey between 1967
and1976,whichtookhimfromabeing

amused.)
I do not know what catalyst caused this
evolution in Bob’s views. He had an
aversion to the counter cultural uprisings
which sprung up in 1967 and 1968, and he
believed by the ’70s that the policies of the
Johnson Administration had exacerbated
economic dislocation and poverty. He also
asserted that the wage and price controls
of the Nixon Administration had been
an utter failure. Mostly, I suspect, there
was a bit of the enfant terrible in Bob; he
liked being contrarian. If all of respectable
academic thought (and the Williams
Faculty) was on one side of a question,
Bob took the other side in the tradition of
intellectual inquiry and for the sheer fun
of it.

von Mises and Friedrich von Hayek,
who had both witnessed the horrors
of totalitarian Europe and advocated
individual liberty as the antidote. Bob
rejected the stances of Pat Buchanan and
other “paleocons” as anti-intellectual and
ultimately harmful to human freedom.
He displayed sensitivity in rejecting the
cranks of the John Birch Society who in
the ’50s had discredited conservatism as an
intellectual force for a generation.

Bob enjoyed being contrarian in other
ways. He opted out of the school defined
benefit pension program in the ’70s (which
was administered by TIAA-CREF) instead
wishing to control his own destiny with
investments in rare coins and bullion.
Although this was, in terms of the returns
of the 80s and 90s, a disastrous move, I
think Bob wanted to control, as much
as possible, his own life; he disliked
bureaucracies, be they of the governmental
or corporate variety.

Burnardine Fraser Flanagan
writes, “I was the first AfricanAmerican female to volunteer for
the US Army from New London,
CT. I volunteered in 1943 and
served overseas in the European
Theater of Operations (ETO) from
February 1943 until December
3, 1945. My unit was the Central
Postal Unit. We dispatched all the
mail to the soldiers in the ETO.
We worked shifts 7 a.m.–3 p.m.,
3 p.m.–11 p.m., 11 p.m.–7 a.m.
around the clock six days a week.
I was honorably discharged from
Fort Dix on December 15, 1945.
I received American Service,
European African, Eastern Service,
Good Conduct, WWII Victory, and
WAAC Service medals. I graduated
from William Backus Nursing
School in 1963. Worked at the
Submarine Medical Center as an
LPN. Worked in all departments.
Retired after 15 years. During all
this I got married and had five
wonderful, loving children, four
boys and one girl. You can see I
have a very good life and I thank
God for his gracious blessing. I
was in the ETO and the ship we
were on never got hit by a German
torpedo. Although the Germans
were bombing England three times
a week, we never got bombed.
Jack and I celebrated our 64th
wedding anniversary with our
50th cruise, this time aboard
the Norwegian Dawn en route
to Bermuda. Arriving home, I
learned via a phone call with
Gertie Shragowitz Margolick
that Emily David Wildes and her
husband Warren were celebrating
their 63rd anniversary in Groton,
where they reside. Gertie also
told me that her journalist son,
David, has written another book
to be published in October by the
Yale University Press. It is entitled
Elizabeth and Hazel, Two Women
of Little Rock. David researched his
book in Arkansas, where the two
women still reside. He interviewed
both of them—the subjects of the
iconic photography of the white
girl in jeans glaring at and jeering
the young black girl in a dress
accompanied by state troopers
on the first day when schools
were integrated in Little Rock. No
wonder Gertie is so proud of her
son, especially since he dedicated
it to his mother! Congratulations
to both of you. I had a lovely
letter from Eleanor Chapell Trail,
who has lived in Spring City, TN
for many years now. She writes
that she turned 86 in June and
her children refer to her as the
bionic woman because of all her
operations and artificial parts,
which include both knees and a
hip! Eleanor adds that she has seven
children, 12 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren. Now that is
a houseful! She also apologized
for never having returned to
Connecticut for our reunions,
but with all those young Trails,
we completely understand. She
asked to give everyone her love and
wished us strength, happiness and
satisfaction. I truly appreciated her
letter and hope that others of you
will write or call to let us know of
your activities. We enjoyed a lovely
lunch this spring when our Lunch

Josh Brewster writes, “I work at
the Minneapolis V.A. and have
moved out of social work and
into administration. Live in St.
Paul with my wife Amy and our
spoiled Golden Retriever, Rosie. I
really like Minnesota from March
through November, the winters get
a little long. We have great friends
here and enjoy all that the Twin
Cities has to offer. Don’t get back
to SE CT as much as I would like.
My brother Dean Avery ’99 is in
the Peace Corps in the Dominican
Republic, finishing his second year
and may be extending for a third
year. My brother Latham Avery
’03 is finishing his first year in a
dual master’s degree program in
social work and public health at
the University of South Carolina.
You may recall Dean, Latham and
I were all different during our high
school years, yet we all will end up
with our master’s in social work
and doing some sort of service
for a couple years (Peace Corps or
AmeriCorps). I talk to Adam Milne
every month or so. He has the
perfect family (wife, two daughters)
and seems very happy. I connected
with Shannon Haley a while back.
She is a lawyer in NYC. Looking
forward to my 20th reunion next
year.”
Phil Porter writes, “My wife Lizbie
and I are living in Lexington, MA
with our two children, Charlie age
5 and Annie who was born this
past January. I am busy with my
general contracting business, Porter
Builders. I have recently emailed
with Evan Bienstock and Patrick
McLaughlin who are both doing
very well. I am hoping to make it
back to Williams soon to see all the
great changes that have taken place.”
Amie Tesler married David Bentley
on August 21, 2010 on the beach in
Watch Hill, RI. They are currently
living in NYC and honeymooned in
Thailand last November.
