Indiana University of
Pennsylvania’s Alumni Association includes all graduates
of IUP. It is governed
by a volunteer board
of directors, and
serving as president
is Jim Wansacz, a
1994 graduate with a
bachelor’s degree in
business management and a minor in
economics. Rep.
Wansacz represents
the 114th Legislative
District in the Pennsylvania House of
Representatives.
Wansacz, who lives
in Old Forge, is beginning his eighth
year as a member of
the board of directors
and his first term as
president. The alumni
association aims to
enrich the lives of its
more than 115,000
alumni and build relationships to advance
IUP. It creates outreach initiatives, both
on and off campus,
to increase involvement among alumni,
cultivate relationships
and strengthen alumni pride.
On behalf of IUP’s alumni and the IUP
Alumni Board of Directors, it is my pleasure
to invite all members of the Indiana area
community to join us for the many events
planned for our annual homecoming weekend, as alumni, friends and community
members celebrate IUP’s proud history and
look forward to its promising future.
In addition to the traditional parade, football game and reunion events, on Friday
evening, we will honor three special graduates with the first Volunteer of the Year
Award: Gene Abplanalp, Bill Dawson and
George Glarner.
In honor and memory of classmate Jack
Crossan, who passed away in 1974, they established the Jack Crossan Memorial Scholarship. These three 1956 graduates were
well ahead of their time in terms of philanthropic support for their alma mater, but
what makes them truly stand out is their
consistent
commitment
to IUP
— they have three
decades of lending their
names, connections and financial resources to this and
many other scholarships and projects.
However, as we honor these three gentlemen, I am proud to note
this is just one story out of
thousands that show the
commitment and regard
that IUP alumni have for
this wonderful institution.
As a graduate, I have very
fond memories of Indiana,
and continued appreciation
for the partnerships and
hospitality this community
JIM WANSACZ
offers our students and visitors. In return, we hope this special weekend
is an enjoyable one for members of our
home community. IUP is proud to call Indiana County its home, and its alumni — be
they near or far — are proud to be Indiana’s
“adopted sons and daughters.”
Enjoy the weekend.
Sincerely,
Jim Wansacz

IUP grad, author tells story of ‘Earth Angels’
“IT’S A BIG story and it
needed to be told.”
The Indiana Gazette
Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduate and author Joey Lynn
Guarneri Sarkees will be signing
copies of her book, “Earth Angels,”
during homecoming weekend.
The book signing will take place
from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday
at the Co-Op Store in the Hadley
Union Building.
Self-published “Earth Angels”
(iUniverse; $9.99 electronic, $12.95
softcover, $22.95 hardcover) is Sarkees’ debut book, a nonfiction account of the 2003 IUP women’s
rugby team, which was involved in
a fatal vehicle pile-up on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Four people
were killed in the accident and 28
were injured.
“It’s a big story, and it needed to
be told,” said Sarkees, 33, of
Philadelphia.

About 20 members of the rugby
club were traveling east on the
Pennsylvania Turnpike on April 5,
2003, heading to a match in Shippensburg, when the accident took
place. Roughly 14 vehicles collided
in dense fog at about 11 a.m. between the Breezewood and Fort
Littleton exits in Brush Creek
Township, Fulton County.
Members of the club, traveling in
six different vehicles, stopped and
provided assistance to the accident victims, giving CPR and firstaid support. Team members were
on the scene for more than three
hours providing assistance. One of

the member’s vehicles was involved in the accident, but the
women were unhurt.
The Pennsylvania State Police
later honored the team for its actions, awarding the players Outstanding Citizenship Awards. Their
story also was featured in Reader’s
Digest’s “Everyday Heroes” section, and the rugby club members
were selected by readers as the
2003 Reader’s Digest Heroes of the
Year, based on 7,500 electronic
votes. While the book details the
incident and offers personal insights into the families of those
who died in the crash and shows
how the accident changed team
members’ lives, it also addresses
the dynamics of being a member
of a rugby team and issues related
to women’s athletics. Sarkees graduated from IUP in 1999 with a
journalism degree. While a student, she helped restart the rugby
team, which had been dormant.
Though she didn’t know the
women involved in the accident,
she said she came to know them
through researching it. She said
she decided to write the book following a conversation one day
with her husband. They were driving to Deep Creek, Md., and were
on the turnpike in the area where
the accident had taken place. She
said her husband suggested that
she write something about the accident.
“He kind of planted the idea in
my head,” she said.
What followed after two years’
worth of work was the 108-page
“Earth Angels,” so titled because
some of the accident victims and
the press took to calling the team
members angels.
“The girls were selfless. They
were heroic. They were brave,” said
Sarkees. “You hear a lot about people helping individuals, but you
don’t hear a lot about a whole team
helping people,” she said.
“Earth Angels,” released earlier
this year, has received two awards
from iUniverse: a Rising Star
award, given to a publication
based on its potential for commercial success, and an Editor’s
Choice award, given to a book that
publishers judge to be well-written. Sarkees is donating 20 percent
of the royalties from book sales to
the Earth Angels Foundation, a
nonprofit organization she and
her husband have established. The
organization was created to help
support and promote women’s
sports, she said.

There are many long-standing
IUP Homecoming parade traditions: the ROTC cannon that starts
the parade, colorful floats that reflect each year’s theme, marching
bands and classic cars filled with
Indiana and university dignitaries.
This year’s parade begins the
second decade of a tradition
added in 1999: parade grand marshals representing the class that
graduated 50 years ago.
“The homecoming parade is one
of the central activities of the
weekend and is one that truly
brings community and university
together,” Mary Morgan, IUP
Alumni Affairs associate director,
said.
“We developed the idea of the
parade marshals as a way to honor
our alumni and to showcase the
long-standing and consistent support that our alumni have for their
alma mater. It is impressive to see
that 50 years or more after graduation, our alumni want to return to
IUP and are proud to be part of the
homecoming festivities.”
The parade marshal tradition
started in 1999 with three members of the class of 1949, all of Indiana: Sam Furgiuele, Peggy LepleyHermann and the late Bob Warren.
Both men were retired faculty from
IUP and achieved the rank of faculty emeritus. Furgiuele served as
president of the IUP Alumni Board
and on the Foundation’s Board of
Directors. Lepley-Hermann retired
as a librarian at United High
School.
This year’s parade marshals are
Bernard Moreau, from Homer City,
and Robert Shoemaker, from Butler.
Moreau, a business education
graduate, retired from his faculty
position at IUP in 1996. He is a
Penn State-Indiana County Master
Gardener and a model railroader.
He also volunteers with the AARP
to do tax counseling.
Shoemaker, an elementary education graduate, retired from his
position as school administrator in
the Seneca Valley School District in
1995.
He served on the IUP Alumni Association Board of Directors and is
an active volunteer in his community. He enjoys traveling, gardening, fly fishing, hunting, bicycling
and playing bridge.
Parade marshals through the
years have been:
2009, from the class of 1959:
Robert Cleminson, of Nellysford,
Va., a retired marketing executive
from ExxonMobil; Ronald Frey, of
Mount Laurel, N.J., a retired biology teacher; and Joan Zima Moss, of
Johnstown, a retired guidance
counselor from Greater Johnstown
Vocational Technical School.
Moss’ granddaughter attends
IUP.
Both Cleminson and Frey played
football while they were students
at IUP.
2008, from the class of 1958:
Shirley Gibson Pow, of Beaver, who
retired in 1999 from her position as
coordinator of the Beaver Area
School District’s gifted program;
and Norma Freliche Zimmer, of
Pittsburgh, who retired in 1964
from her position as an elementary teacher from the Penn Hills
School District. Both are elementary education graduates.
2007, from the class of 1957:
Judy Zettle, of Ohio, a second generation IUP graduate (her mother
graduated in 1923); Dr. Ernest Papinchak, of Johnstown, a professional musician; and Indiana resident William Culp, a former IUP
professor.
2006, from the class of 1956:
Beulah Corsini Fisher, Ridgefield,
Conn., a secondary education
English major. She retired from
Dekadt Marketing and Research
Company.
2005, from the class of 1955:
Donna Orr Anderson, of Indiana
and Dr. Barry E. Moore, of Normal,
Ill. Anderson is a home economics
major who worked at Anderson
Shoe Store in Indiana. Moore is a
Distinguished Alumnus of the university and professor emeritus of
art at Illinois State University.
2004, from the class of 1954:
Robert and Suzanne Keelan Green,
of Hollidaysburg, both education
majors and both retired from
teaching careers in the Hollidaysburg Area School District.
2003, from the class of 1953: the
late Jean Caldwell Jenkins, of Indiana, and the late David Johnson, of
Havertown, formerly of Indiana.
Jenkins was a home economics
major. Johnson, a social studies
major, retired from the Pennsylvania Manufacturing Associate
Group as vice president-corporate
secretary, and at the time of his
passing, was a member of IUP’s
Council of Trustees.
He had also been honored with
the university’s Distinguished
Alumni Award.
2002, from the class of 1952:
James Farabaugh, of Indiana,
Wanda Phillips Marks, of Hermitage, and Clara Jo Colaianni

Crimson Court a new IUP tradition
There’s a new group of student representatives for Homecoming 2010 at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Instead of the traditional king and
queen and runners-up, this year’s
homecoming representatives will be
seven students who will make up the
“Crimson Court.”
“The Crimson Court reflects a very
positive transition toward the election
of homecoming representatives in a
culturally inclusive and gender-neutral
fashion,” IUP Dean of Students Terry
Appolonia said.
“Our student community strongly
supported the abandonment of the antiquated ‘king’ and ‘queen’ titles.
In addition to our Punxsutawney
campus representative, each of our six
Indiana campus representatives is a
junior or senior of high academic
caliber.”
“The process speaks very well of the
progressive mindset of our students.”
Applications were accepted from the
undergraduate student body, and successful candidates were pooled by each
academic college. The student body
then cast votes for one person from
each college to serve as the representative of that college on the 2010 Crimson
Court.
Crimson Court members are invited
to participate in homecoming activities
and will be featured at appropriate academic department and college events.
To qualify as a Crimson Court member, students must be a full-time IUP
student who has successfully completed 60 credits with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and be in
good judicial standing.
And the court is ...
The following students were selected for the first Crimson Court at IUP:
■ Eberly College of Business and Information Technology: Christie Rocco, a marketing
major from Northern Cambria
■ College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Katie Tidwell, a psychology major
from Indiana
■ College of Education and Educational Technology: Heather Weleski, a special education and clinical services major from Fenelton

■ College of Health and Human Services: Adel Albalushi, a hospitality management
major from Saudi Arabia

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s 2010 homecoming is bringing
with it a new award for alumni: the
Volunteer of the Year award.
The Volunteer of the Year award
recognizes alumni who have given
service above and beyond to the
university since their graduation,
Mary Jo Lyttle, director of the IUP
Office of Alumni Affairs said.
The award will be given out annually on homecoming weekend,
beginning this year.
Although volunteers have been
recognized for their services in the
past, the Volunteer of the Year
award is the first award given to
IUP alumni for volunteer services
for the university.
“We want to recognize outstanding volunteers for the dedication

in support of this scholarship and
many others, as well as offering
their names, connections and financial resources to IUP, according to university officials.

Early 1900s: Intercollegiate athletic teams begin to form and compete.
The football team won a national
championship in 1917 and milerelay track teams from 1911, 1918
and 1925 also won championships.
1927: Indiana State Normal
School became the Pennsylvania
State Teachers College at Indiana.
The school’s purpose officially becomes “the education and preparation of teachers,” through students preparing for other careers
are allowed to enroll.
1959: A legislative bill allows
state teachers colleges to drop
“teachers” from their names; the
school becomes Indiana State College under President Willis Pratt, in

1961: The Student Cooperative
Association is formed to collect
and disperse a special student activity fee.

It is the only such building at a
Pennsylvania state college.

1973: The Association of Pennsylvania State College & University
Faculties proposes the IUP and the
13 other state-owned colleges in
Pennsylvania unite and establish a
governing system to be freed from
the rule of the Department of Education.
1983: APSCUF’s plan elevated
the 14 state colleges to university
