Our Goal & Mission:

Life as a college studentathlete
By Sarah Pastorek (Member of IUP’s Women’s Basketball program)
One of the leading struggles for studentathletes is stress. Two of the unlimited
benefits of being a studentathlete are determination and management skills.
Time management is our forte. It is unbelievable the amount of work we put in
daily to both our sport and our schooling. Not many people have the ability to
get such a large number of tasks done within a 24hour period.
Exceptions...studentathletes.
Our routines are most times undesirable. Yet, we chose our lives. We choose
how hard we work on the court, field, course, track, or in the pool. We choose to
give back to the communities that support us. We choose to suffer from lack of
sleep. We choose to be great students in the classroom.
But we didn’t choose to be competitors. We were born with it, just as we were
born destined to play at the college level. Our love for our sports is
uncontrollable.
Our days fly by. Some of us wake up for 5:30 a.m. workouts, and some of us are
finishing practice around 9:30 p.m. or later some nights. Our studies and school
work consume the rest of our day. It isn’t easy. It never was, and it never will be.
Coaches demand as much from us as our teachers do in the classroom. However,
all of us studentathletes know what is our number priority: school.
We understand the difference between temporary and permanent. We
understand that our athletic abilities are temporary, and that the knowledge and
skills we are taught in the classroom need to last a lifetime.
We have two jobs: to be a student and to be an athlete. Be a studentathlete.
