An ‘address’ (mugavari in Tamil!) for poor students!
One Mr. Boopathiraja of Anaiyampatti Pudhur Village of Salem District got placed in Traffic
Service department of Indian Railways. Kamala Devi of Villupuram has cleared the Group-I
exams conducted by Tamilnadu Public Service Commission. Mugavari Foundation of
Velachery, Chennai, has been helping such poor students belonging to economically
backward families. Likewise, about 20 students are training for their Civil Services exams. 10
students in MBBS preparation, 6 doing their M.E., 56 students pursuing their B.E. courses, 5
attempting their Ph.D. research, and altogether 179 students are supported by Mugavari’s
efforts.
“I was born in Agaram alias Arathi Agraharam Village, situated south of Thalaivasal Town,
Salem district of Tamilnadu. Our family consisting of my elder sister, a younger brother was
a daily-wage (coolie) farm laborers. When I was doing my C.A., my sister died of heart
problem. That death made a huge impact on me. At that time, there was a girl named Kasthuri
in our village who secured 1136 marks in her 12th public exams, with 200 out of 200 in both
Physics and Chemistry. In Biology she scored 195 out of 200! As her Entrance Exams marks
were a little less, she was offered seat only in a private medical college. But, her family’s
economic conditions did not allow her to join there. I mulled, “Had there been a Doctor
available in our village, my sister would have been alive today?”. Then I decided to help that
girl continue her education, somehow. I joined her in a training institute to prepare for
Entrance Examinations for medical seat. After a year of training, she stood 3 rd in the entrance
exams with a cut-off score of 296.25. She got a seat in Chengalpet Government Medical
College. I met Cinema Director A.R.Murugadoss and explained the girl’s financial situation.
He offered to sponsor her entire education expenses. Now, that girl is a qualified doctor. This
is how our social service started in the year 2002. From then onwards, Mugavari has been
helping students who could not continue their education in spite of getting admission in
colleges.” says Mugavari’s founder Mr.Ramesh (34).
“We identify those students who study well and secure high marks, but find themselves
handicapped by economic conditions to continue their studies, and sponsor their entire
educational expenses. The role played by a student, Mr.Vetrivel in establishing and
consolidating Mugavari as an institution, is very significant. Also, Mr.Boopathiraja who has
cleared his Civil Services exams, and Ms.Banupriya who is attempting to clear it are standing
by me in my efforts at Mugavari. SRM University has been kind enough to offer seats along
with financial help to those students identified by us. Chennai Mayor Shri.Saidai Duraisamy
has been very generous to offer his Manidhaneyam Charitable Trust, for our students towards
their boarding and lodging. And, there are others with equally philanthropic hearts –
Mr.Krishnamurthy, MD, Suriyan Pharma, Mr. D.Lakshmanan, Lena Steels,
Mr.K.Vaidhyalingam, Chairman, Balaji Rubber Industries, Salem,.. are a few of the many.”
said Ramesh, palpably moved by such golden gestures.
