We have only one more club‐supported show to go (“Corvettes for Chip”) and the 2010 season is over. I would like to thank Dave & Susan Hornung, Kevin & Michelle Minnich, and the many club volun‐ teers for a fantastic Fall show at the Sands. This was the most successful ”Fiberglass & Steel” show we have ever had — probably because it was the first one that it didn't rain. It is good that the only thing we had to worry about was where to put the all the cars. The club’s annual Holiday Party is coming up and hopefully I look forward to see‐ ing everyone at The Barnhouse Restaurant (Bath, PA) on Saturday, December 11, for a night of fun and friendship. Remember, we go down to only one meeting in November, December and Janu‐ ary, so be sure to mark your calendars. Let's get our ‘Vettes out for one last run before the cold weather sets in and I'll see you at the Corvettes for Chip Show. Going into the final lap, the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin was trailing Toni Vilander in the class‐leading No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari by 10 seconds. With a low‐fuel alarm flashing on his own instrument panel, Gavin watched incredulously as the Ferrari slowed on the back straight as it ran out of E85 fuel. Gavin then raced across the finish line 5.763 sec‐ onds ahead of the runner‐up No. 01 Ferrari of Dominick Farnbacher, which also passed Vilander's hapless Ferrari. The 2010 season was not like the previous storied seasons of this powerhouse team. The 2‐car team posted only one win and five podium finishes in the ten‐race season. The change in ALMS format to a single GT class is proving difficult, but Corvette Racing is ready for the challenge. Page 4 Allentown Area Corvette Club ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 17, Iss. 11 | November 2010 Kerbeck’s 2010 Toys For Tots Saturday, Oct. 9 — Kerbeck Corvettes of Atlantic City hosted their annual Toys‐For‐ Tots Drive to benefit the USMC. A last minute change in the program eliminated the Farley Plaza meeting point and “speed run” to the baseball stadium, citing inade‐ quate parking for the 1,000 expected Corvettes. Instead, the participating drivers were asked to drive directly to the ballpark with their toy gifts. Kerbeck again provided food, drinks, door prize raffles, and entertainment for the participants. The last‐minute change in format resulted in a much‐reduced attendance. Only Bernie & Linda Blasko and Don & Helen Friga participated, although over a dozen AACC couples had pre‐ registered. Johnny O’Connell with Linda Blasko. Blasko’s Nassau Blue C5 at the ballpark. To everyone who purchased toys for the event but did not participate — remember that you can do‐ nate your toys locally to the same Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots program at an area mall or local toy drive. Lou Gehrig’s disease, as it is commonly known, causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body caused by degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons. Unable to function, the muscles weaken and atrophy. Affected individuals may ultimately lose the ability to initiate and control all voluntary movement; bladder and the muscles responsible for eye movement are usually, but not always, spared. Cognitive function is generally spared for most patients. Those not participating in the 2‐mile walk proudly displayed their Corvettes outside the park. Thanks to everyone who participated and helped to raise money for the continued research for the cause and treatment of ALS. Special thanks to Bud Benton for organizing the day’s activities. FSCC Corvette Weekend Friday‐Sunday, Oct. 15‐17 — Fall means Corvettes “down the shore.” This year was no exception with over a dozen AACC ‘Vettes heading for Ocean City, MD. Much like last year, those attending had to make their way south in the rain. Once folks arrived, however, the fun started and simply never stopped. Friday’s boardwalk parade was again a popular attraction and photos are available on Free State’s website. Although no AACC members won awards at Saturday’s multi‐ sanctioned car shows or rallyes, everyone enjoyed their time in Maryland. Whether taking in the car shows, roaming the Maryland shopping centers in search of the best deal, or strolling the famous Boardwalk for food, drink or t‐shirts, there was something for everyone. If you participated and have photos or stories to share, please send them to the Newsletter editors at our NEW email account — [email protected] — for inclusion in a future publication. Baby Announcements There are plenty of stories and rumors circulating about club members seeking new rides. If you either replaced a Corvette in your stable or added another, please be sure to tell the Newsletter Editors. (Tell Membership, as well, to keep our roster up to date.) We will make all efforts to run a photo and vehicle details of your new baby. UPDATES: (1) Dennis & Bonnie Corona sold their White ‘95 Coupe. (2) Jim Hedden sold his ‘99 Mag Red Coupe and purchased an ‘09 Z06. Both ‘Vettes were sold locally, so the drivers may not look familiar even if the cars do! Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 6 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 17, Iss. 11 | November 2010 A Radical C8 in Works? Alright, everyone who is getting sick of GM saying that the next generation of the Corvette is going to be a mid engine raise your hand. Well GM is at it again only this time they are talking about radical changes to come to the C8 generation of the American muscle car. This move is indeed odd as GM has yet to release any concrete plans are for the C7 Corvette which is already the source of many rumors and speculation. Now GM throws this gasoline on the fire and word is spreading fast. The radical changes that GM is talking about now for the C8 Corvette include making the eighth generation Vette come with not only a mid-engine location but also having that engine be a high powered six cylinder as opposed to the traditional eight. This is not the first time that GM has spread such rumors, but this is the most aware that GM and the rest of the planet have been in regards to being green. Also rumored for the C8 is a body that will be composed of something other than fiberglass. This breech of protocol is also not a first, but with all this talk of change it seems that GM just might be serious about lessening its carbon footprint and the mighty Corvette would certainly be a great place to start. As for the C7, who knows? The rumblings on that is that it will come out in the next couple of years and most speculate it will be in 2013 as a tribute to the Vette’s 60th birthday. While it is known that GM is actively seeking design ideas from the United States and abroad, what is now being said is that the C7 will be a more conservative model of the C6. Putting conservative next to Corvette though, just doesn’t look right. Once again, only time will tell how the C8 plays out and the C7 for that matter. While the GM engineering minds are brilliant, it is doubtful that they will begin too much work on the C8 before they are totally finished with the C7, but then again GM is known for their sometimes radical ways of doing things. If the C8 is to have a V-6 it better come with plenty of power or those who have been faithful all these years to the Corvette may find their way to a different brand. But if there is one thing that GM has been able to show in the past is that even smaller engines can be capable of some amazing outputs especially when they are coupled with superchargers and the like. Ultimately what comes out will have equal praise and criticism but one thing is abundantly clear with GM: the Corvette is not going anywhere any time soon. So all you lovers of the Vette can breathe a bit easier knowing that GM at least plans on two more generations of the Corvette with many more to probably come. source: http://www.smokinvette.com/corvette/articles/c8-corvette-in-works-as-well-as-c7-corvette-but-with-radical-changes-planned/ Corvette ZR1 vs. C6.R from Road&Track (Nov 2010) Veteran driver Jan Magnussen summed it up best when he said: “The engine in the ZR1 is fantastic. If we had it in the GT race car we would absolutely kill the GT class.” When comparing race cars to street cars, it’s unusual to think that the race car has less power than the road-going version of that same car. As Jan says, “In a lot of ways the road car is above the race car. The race car will still do a faster lap time around a place like Miller, but take them both to a place like the Autobahn, and I want to be in the ZR1.” Read the full article online at http://www.roadandtrack.com/tests/comparison/chevrolet-corvette-zr1-vs.-c6.r or in print at your newsstand when the November issue is released. Store car with a full tank of gas. While at the gas station, add gas stabilizer. If car is stored for more than 3 months, double the amount of gas stabilizer that is recom‐ mended. 2. Top off all fluids: brake, power steering, oil & transmission. 3. Spray WD‐40 on all door, hood & trunk hinges. If you do not have a good aim, remember to wipe up your over‐spray. 4. Wash & wax just prior to storage. 5. Clean the interior as well, dress all vinyl & rubber with appropriate treatments. 6. To absorb moisture, place a couple bags of desiccant in the interior & in the trunk. 7. To keep critters out of the engine compartment, you might want to consider placing a few moth balls under the hood. 8. Do not leave the emergency parking brake on. 9. If storing on concrete, place a vapor barrier (plastic) on the floor under your car. 10. Just before putting on the cover, don't forget to put the battery tender on. 11. Say goodnight & I'll see you in the spring!! Although the Corvette has been around for nearly 60 years, there were only four Anniversary Editions; 1978 (25th), 1988 (35th), 1993 (40th) and 2003 (50th) . . . Bose was an integrated radio and speaker system introduced optionally in 1984 . . . 1965‐1966 models had an optional gold stripe tire called “Gold Lines” . . . Magnesium weighs about a third less than aluminum, and a magnesium road wheel was optional for Corvettes starting in 1997 . . . All 1986 Indianapolis 500 pace cars were convertibles . . . 1967 through 1969 had an optional red stripe tire available called “Red Lines”? NOTICE... Your AACC Newsletter has a new email address.
