Allentown Area Corvette Club, Inc. ‘Vetter’s Letter May 2012 President Frank Shuletsky 215-538-5451 [email protected] Vice-President Barb Parsons 610-258-8523 From the Volume 19, Issue 5 val Office A Young Man's Dream — Will I ever own a Corvette? That ques‐ tion never entered my mind. When I was a teenager, I remember going to the Chevy dealer to see the new Corvettes, since the first Corvette in 1953. I worked in a gas station and must have driven Corvette owners Secretary Carol Jenkins 610-317-9277 Treasurer Janet Mohring 610-965-8593 NCCC Governor Pete Lileck 610-349-0120 crazy with all my questions while filling their gas tanks. I dreamed one day I would own one. First came school, then marriage, then children, then Grandchil‐ dren. As life would have it, I just never thought that day would come when I actu‐ ally would have that "young man's dream" come true at age 61. I mentioned to Charlotte many times how badly I wanted a Vette. One day Charlotte told me that it was time to make this happen. We looked in the newspapers and used car lots, but none called out, "Buy me!" Membership Marty & Laura Hegyi 610-730-2695 Then we decided to go to Corvette weekend at Carlisle. We searched the Corral and still no luck, even though sellers were dropping prices as we looked at their Events John Kostick, Jr. 610-432-7172 NCM Ambassador cars. They all needed much work, whether it was paint or mechanical. As we walked through the vendors, there were also many Corvettes for sale. (Continued from page 1) That's where I saw my red ’69 convertible. As I walked past, it called to me, "Buy me!" We did some price haggling after I test drove it and that young teenager drove it home. Not only do we still have that car, but I have added a 2003 Anniversary Red Convertible to my garage. That ‘69 still speaks to me every time I go in the garage. If you have any other Corvette stories, please tell Laura and Marty so that they can have it printed in our newsletter. Please remember to pray for our men and women serving our country, who make it possible for us to continue to en‐ joy the freedoms in our great country. As always, save the wave! Final Year of C6 Brings Few Changes Chris Demorro from CorvetteOnline.com Apr. 17, 2012 — The 2013 model year represents the 60th anniver‐ sary of the Corvette (though GM missed a couple of years of produc‐ tion here or there), as well as the final year of production for the C6 model. For 2014 GM promises we will get an all‐new Corvette that has been subject to endless and rampant speculation for years now. For the final year of production, GM has few changes in mind for the C6 Corvette, reports GM Authority. It’s about time...though we are sad to see it go. For 2013 GM is offering the 60th Anniversary Corvette 427 Convertible. The 427 Convertible promises to meld both nostalgia and modernity into one awesome roadster. GM will also make available many of the Corvette models we’ve come to know and love, like the Z06 and 638 horsepower ZR1. But among the other changes are a new blue color, called Night Race Blue, which will replace Carlisle Blue Metallic. The Competition Gray wheels are being replaced by Black Painted Aluminum wheels. But besides the 60th anniversary Corvette, the C6 will depart without much fan‐ fare, which when you think about it is kind of sad. Then again, the C7 Corvette should make us forget all about the C6, when it finally debuts. Visit www.AutoResourceToolKit.com for the automotive related happenings in the Lehigh Valley and beyond... Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 6 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 19, Iss. 5 | May 2012 AACC Memories Tom Himmelsbach (Lifetime Member, ‘66,‘76) I thought some of you might be interested what the Club did during its early years. We were a very competition‐oriented group of folks — autocrosses, rallyes, economy runs, etc. were what most Club members wanted for events. We also did some crazy stuff. Like the time they painted a Mid‐year car with orange water based paint for a local Halloween parade. Supposed to look like a pumpkin? The water based paint was supposed to wash off easily. You know where this is going? It didn’t wash off very well at all! I guess the next owners of this car are still trying to figure out how to get the orange paint out of the cracks and crevices!! It seemed like a good idea at the time!! Many of us were into serious autocrossing and high speed events. A sportscar club near Lebanon ran a winter auto‐ cross series at the Lebanon Valley Vo‐Tech school campus. They used the roadways surrounding the school, and some of the parking lots. It was a huge and very fast course, probably around 1.5 miles in length. At times the snow was piled high on both sides of the course, like racing in a white tunnel. At the one Drivers’ meeting, I remember the offi‐ cials warning of a huge ice patch in turn 3. This turn was after a long straightaway, that was topped out in 3rd gear, or if really nuts, even 4th gear. Then you had to brake and go down into 1st gear for this turn. Needless to say that made for some interesting racing that day! This course consisted of some parking lot cone racing and then high speed blasts around the perimeter roads surrounding the school. Most of the high speed areas were fairly clear of off course obstructions. However there was (1) sign coming out of turn 4, this turn was a 2nd gear turn so pretty good speed was possible. Now the sign was a 15 MPH speed limit sign. Well one of our Club members, driving a Vega, remember him? Anyway he managed to lose it in this turn and completely wiped out that sign. After the Event, someone took a picture of the mangled sign and the damaged right quarter panel on the Vega. So much for observing the speed limit!! That reminds me of one of the trips out there to this Event. We caravanned with about 8 cars out RT 22. One of the guys decided to clean out the carbon on his big block mid‐year. He was blasting along well into triple‐digit speeds when the Bethel Police Department decided to join us!! Needless to say it was an expen‐ sive tune up for him that day! We also shared working on Club members cars. I remember putting a new engine in a ‘67 coupe that was this member’s every day driver. He commuted from Allentown to Philly every day, down RT 309. Well he enjoyed street racing other cars, until one winter day he tried an Olds 4‐4‐2. He was leading until the #3 connecting rod exited the left side of the block! The Olds won! We installed a new Chevrolet short block in my garage over a weekend. Several club members pitched in to help. It turned into a party. I can still picture our young sons gathering the beer cans and pizza boxes that were scattered all over the floor, along with the Speedi‐Dri!! Somewhere I have the pictures! That’s enough for now. If you’re interested I’ll tell some more tales of past, in future newsletters... Page 7 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 19, Iss. 5 | May 2012 Lunch & Luck Run Sat., Apr. 14 — Marty and Laura Hegyi organized a day of excitement and led a pack of 15 Corvettes (and a Caddy CTS) to Nick’s 114 Café (New Cubmerland, PA) for lunch followed by a stop @ Hollywood Casino (Grantville, PA) on the way back to the Lehigh Valley. It was a nice mix of both “older” and newer club members who started the day with a line‐ up and driver’s meeting at Cracker Barrel in Fogelsville. The drive to Nick’s was relaxing (except for the shuffling around the Harrisburg Beltway) and everyone arrived at Nick’s Café without incident. Once inside, we were greeting with (basically) the place to ourselves. What followed were nice conversations, good fellowship and some terrific crab cakes (Nick’s specialty). Before heading out, the gang walked a few block to the Dingeldein Bakery for some fresh‐ baked treats. Our departure from New Cumberland created a short Corvette Parade along Main Street. The gang split up around the Grantville exit where half of the folks exited to the Hollywood Casino and Penn National Racetrack and the rest continued for home, with some stopping at Cabela’s to stock up for the coming fishing season. There were no big winners (or losers) at the casino, but everyone really seemed to enjoy this chance to get out friends and enjoy the day in their Corvettes. Thanks to Marty and Laura for coordinating this event. What’s next??? Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 8 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 19, Iss. 5 | May 2012 World Record Attempt Lindsey Fisher on CorvetteOnline.com Apr. 16, 2012 — What would you do to set a world record? While some people try to hold their breath for minutes and others try to eat half their body weight in hot dogs, Charlie Mallon is trying to break a world record for doing what he does best‐ collecting Chevro‐ let memorabilia. So just how much Chevy stuff does Mallon have? Well according to GM News, over 2,100 items. Mallon has been collecting Chevrolet items, including drinking glasses, signs, flags, pieces of clothing, and books for about 40 years now. While his collection is made up of many different things, the item Mallon has collected the most of is miniature cars, hundreds of which are miniature Corvettes. “I appreciate all cars, but there’s something special about the Corvette,” Mallon told GM News. “It’s the look. It’s the sound. It’s the mystique. Everything about the Corvette makes it the American sports car.” In addition to his miniature Corvettes, Mallon also owns a life‐size 2005 Corvette coupe. The world record that Mallon is going for with his massive collection is for the “Largest Collection of Chevrolet Memorabilia.” On Wednesday, Mallon laid out 2,181 Chevrolet‐related items at the Downington West High School in Downington, Pennsylvania for an official count. Several witnesses were on hand, including a public accountant, to document the collection and the official paperwork was submitted for review to the Guinness Book of World Records. Mallon should know if he set the record in a couple weeks. So what possessed Mallon to try for a world record with his collection? Well, part of it was curiosity and the other part was to “validate my insanity to my wife,” he told GM News. Only time will tell if Mallon’s Chevy collection is the largest one documented, and if it isn’t, we want to know who has more than 2,181 Chevy items stashed away in storage. This was proven on Friday when NFL defensive end Jason Babin stopped by, seeking information on how to make his ZR1 even faster! Babin, #93 for the Philadelphia Eagles (and former player for the Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Sea‐ hawks and Houston Texans), had been touring caves in the area with his family and decided to swing by the Museum with some questions on souping up his ride.
