After Valerie shared with the membership what is in the care packages they ship, (magazines, hygiene, snacks, letters of support, a United States Consti‐ tution and a Star for Our Troops) all Veterans were asked to stand. Page 5 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 22, Iss. 1 | January 2015 AACC at the Palace Len Feinberg (‘13) Sat., 13.Dec | About 84 club members, spouses and friends headed over to The Palace Center for the annual AACC Holiday Party. They came from the North, West, East, and South to attend. Laura made up an hour‐long slide show of pictures supplied by club members from AACC’s events and trips over the past ten or so years. Although the faces were the same, both Corvettes and hairstyles changed. There were cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from 6 to 6:45 pm, then a very nice dinner of soup, salad and entrees consist‐ ing of fish, chicken, and beef. D.J. Brian Keith provided background and dance music throughout the evening. Brian did double‐duty as the event photographer as we jammed everyone in front of the Palace’s massive Christmas tree. AACC President, Jeff Mohring, presented gift certificates to club members and recognized their involvement through‐ out 2014 — Mike and Cindy Cutro, Kevin and Michelle Minnich, and Len Feinberg. A good time was had by all. KC Corvettes, CorvetteForum.com Mon., 24.Nov | General Motors published service advisory G_0000205212 to all dealerships: Effective Immediately, GM is changing the required maintenance schedule for all 2014/2015 Z51 and Z06 Corvettes equipped with dry sump oil systems. For vehicles that have not had the first oil change performed, the new schedule will require that the oil/filter be changed immediately after the break‐in period, which occurs after the first 500 miles of op‐ eration. Once the break‐in oil change is performed, the Oil Life Monitor should be reset and customers should follow the Oil Life Monitoring system for all future oil change needs. Additionally, a 5th oil change has been added to the Included Maintenance program for these vehicles. C7 Ships Into Europe David Chick, CorvetteOnline.com Thu., 04.Dec | GT Spirit reports that the Europe‐bound Vettes will actually be given the Z51 performance package as a standard, rather than as the option as it is here in the States. This means that drivers will immediately be able to take advantage of some serious goodies, such as the retuned suspension, beefier brakes, limited‐slip differential, and dry‐sump oiling system, as well as cooling support for the transmission and differential. But before you go nuts thinking that the Europeans are getting a better deal, take into account that they will pay a hefty premium before ever being able to take a spin around the Nürburgring. Germans, for example, can expect to fork over 74,500 Euros (or roughly $92,000) for a Stingray, which is almost $40,000 more than an American would pay for the same vehicle. GM Begins Restoration of 1,000,000th Brent Davis, CorvetteOnline.com Mon., 08.Dec | By now anybody concerned with Corvettes is well versed in the National Corvette Museum sinkhole tragedy, its progress as well as the unfortunate eight that took a plunge towards middle earth that night. Luckily sev‐ eral of these cars were marked for restoration. The infamous “Blue Devil” is one such restoration which we happily saw drive out on the floor at SEMA Show 2014. The next car to begin its restoration process is the one millionth Corvette to ever be produced, a beautiful, white, 1992 con‐ vertible. That car was removed as carefully as possible, but it took quite a spill and the sinkhole apparently was no shal‐ low hole. Thanks to the Detroit Free Press we have some additional insight with the ’92. According to Dave Bolognino the Direc‐ tor of GM Design Fabrication, “Photographs don’t do the size and magnitude of the sinkhole justice. Mueller, Chevrolet into the Grand Canyon.” This may help to give us some idea of the sheer size of the hole and just how far the cars fell. That being said, Bolognino will be leading the restoration. In discussing the one‐millionth car, Dave Bolognino said, “The whole car’s going to have to come apart… we think it’ll take about six months, but really, it’ll be as long as it takes to get it right.” All of us at Corvette Online are happy to hear that somebody with such care an [sic] dedication will be handling this restoration as well, because from the look of the pictures, it is going to need it. While we don’t know what the budget or expected expense is for the restoration, and think it rude to ask, it can’t be cheap, and judging from Bolognino’s comment, it seems like GM is prepared to make it right. “This is unlike normal collision repair where it’s about the bottom line.” Bolognino said, “The seats are the one‐millionth seats: We’re working to repair, not replace them.” The team at GM are going to try and apply this idea to as much of the car as possible, as Bolognino also mentioned, “We’re maintaining as many original parts as possible, even when it costs more.” We think it is also pretty neat that they are willing to take the time to try and repair a lot of the parts, including the interior previously mentioned. It certainly would be easier and less time consuming to just replace the parts, but keeping as many of the car’s original parts on it really exemplifies their care. It is unknown at this time as to the condition of the internals. While we wouldn’t expect this C4 to immediately fire upon removal from the hole as the “Blue Devil” did, it doesn’t look as there was too much intrusion into the engine compartment. Luckily, the same motor that puts out the horsepower we love, is also one tough piece, and we’re sure it’ll be fine after some TLC. We are looking forward to seeing this car when fully refurbished and complete, back to its proud “one‐millionth Corvette” self. Hopefully lightning will strike twice and we will get to see this car drive out for an unveiling at one of our next events! Page 9 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 22, Iss. 1 | January 2015 Daytona Prototype Gets Makeover Dave Cruikshank, CorvetteOnline.com Wed., 18.Dec | The Chevy Corvette Daytona Prototype race car is getting new Stingray threads for the 2015 Tudor United Sports Car series. General Motors and Pratt and Miller have upped the name association of their Daytona Prototype car and made the coolest DP chassis even better. With styling cues borrowed from the new C7, it’s now easily recognizable as an Corvette family member even in blank canvas, standard issue form. Still swoopy with mid‐engine proportions, the Vette styling tie‐ins integrate nicely. A walk around reveals C7 headlight and single grill opening treatment up front, forward raked side vents down the side and the controversial taillights looking almost if they were lifted intact from production car. All those visual cues integrate with the new carbon fiber body that all of GM teams will use in the 2015 TUDOR United Sports Car Championship series. The Stingrayed Corvette DP hopes to continue Chevrolet’s awesome record in North American prototype racing. Chevy won the 2014 Prototype Engine Manufacturer championship in the inaugural TUDOR Championship. They followed that with consecutive Daytona Prototype Engine Manufacturer titles in the GRAND‐AM Rolex Sports Car Series In three years since its debut, the Corvette DP has claimed 22 race victories including the Rolex 24 At Daytona 24 and Petit Le Mans in 2014. The C7 inspired bodywork will hit the track for the first time at Daytona International Speedway ahead of the 2015 Ro‐ lex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 24‐25. Multiple Corvette DPs also will try out the C7 bodywork during the annual “Roar Be‐ fore the 24″ from Jan. 9‐11 at Daytona. 2015 Z06 ECU is Not a Problem Brent Davis, CorvetteOnline.com Thu., 19.Dec | There has been a recent buzz in the car world about Chevrolet’s newest addition to the Corvette lineup with with [sic] the 2015 Z06. For those of us with our finger on the Corvette pulse, we are more then well versed with what the newest Z06 entails. From the Nurburgring testing footage, to burnouts, dyno runs, and even some engine modifications. [sic] Well some of these new, and fortunate Z06 owners have been reporting noticeable losses in power, but not from mo‐ tor damage. These cars are rather sophisticated, and in an attempt to prevent you from doing damage, these ECUs are limiting power production until the motor is in the “safe zone.” It may be easy for some to think you can just hit the pedal like a switch from the very beginning, considering how technologically advanced these cars are. But beneath it all still lies an internal combustion engine, and they need their time to break‐in properly, tolerances change, metal goes through heat cycles, rings need to seat, and so on. Not a bad reminder, as we can fully understand the desire to see what the all new LT4 can really punch out. There are tons of opinions out there about what constitutes a proper break‐in procedure, and we’re not here to argue if you have something that works. But for those unfamiliar, here are a few simple things you can do: Vary your speed and rpm for the first 500 miles (no cruise control) Avoid full‐throttle starts Allow ample warm‐up time, avoid loading a cold engine Change your motor oil earlier then normal Enjoy your new car! NCM Sinkhole Construction Update Brent Davis, CorvetteOnline.com Mon., 29.Dec | There has been a lot of talk about the National Corvette Museum sinkhole and many people have since had the chance to visit the museum to see the infamous hole, the damaged cars, and the fortunate few which have been restored. Today there was a ceremony held in which the “First Rock” was tossed back into the hole symbolizing that the filling of the hole has finally begun. The rock was inscribed with Awesome God, Everyone Safe by Executive Director Wendell Strode who said, “The good Lord let it happen. It was roughly a quarter to six in the morning and we did not have anyone in the museum. No staff, no visitors, no guests. We’re so thankful for that.” She [sic] then lobbed the rock into the hole after nearly seven straight weeks of construction. A Bobcat has been lowered into the hole to level out the gravel and other aggregate used to fill the hole. As you can see from the pictures, the hole was quite massive and has made for quite a unique job. Strode also mentioned, “Each side of the cave is approximately 30 feet long and about 20 feet high. It’s just not feasible to fill the entire cave with rock so the construction team had to get creative with plugging every crev‐ ice.” In addition to the aggregate, they have used steel sheets and gunnite to add strength. The museum has even decided to add a manhole at the hope of having an exhibit which will enable guests to move a remote controlled camera throughout the underground tunnel. The goal for completion is July of next year, with the exhibit opening on Labor Day weekend 2015, in conjunction with the NCM’s 21st Anniversary Celebration. We wish the National Corvette Museum the best of luck in completing the project! Plant and Museum tours were followed by a few laps at the NCM Motorsports Park. Editor’s Note: Rick was the high bidder of the right to spec the very first production Z06 during the Barrett‐Jackson auc‐ tion in April 2014 at a price of $1,000,000. He also owns the first production C7 coupe and convertible! Must be nice!! Three Join the NCM Board 04.Dec | This week the National Corvette Museum Board of Directors held their quarterly meeting in Bowling Green, during which three new board members were voted in. Paul Mariano of Huntersville, NC is no stranger to most every‐ one in our close‐knit Corvette community as he served as the 2014 National Corvette Caravan Chairman. Paul is a Life‐ time Member of the Museum and serves as the Ambassador to the Museum for the Queen City Corvette Club. Randy Flock of Greenwich, RI is also a familiar face, having served as Captain for the New England Caravan. Randy is a Lifetime Member of the Museum and serves as the Ambassador to the Museum for the Corvette Club of Rhode Island. Dave Heinemann of Orland Park, IL is the incoming president of the National Council of Corvette Clubs and will be fill‐ ing their seat on our board.
